i know this is an old video, but just so you DO know, the guy backing up Josh looking cool in the shades with just a maraca is Jon Theodore, ex-the Mars Volta drummer (their original drummer), one of the very best doing it today. that said, not much place for a drummer in a quiet acoustic set like this one. cheers

P.S. josh is another one like Mike Patton (Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, Fantomas, Tomahawk, etc.), totally self-taught... and like most self-taught singers of loud/rock music, quiet venues like these are very challenging. and i will 100% grant that Josh doesn't have but about HALF (at most, though he can go lower than most of his songs would indicate) of Patton's 6 octave+ range... but he does a lot with what he's got. as you opined here, despite about 3 spots where he lost the thread a bit or completely pulled out and let Mikey Shoes finish the song's last note. tell you what... when he gets to sing full volume, he puts his work in.

Cool video! I think the full falsetto instead of mixed Voice is a fully realized artistic choice. It sounds a bit cooler ina "i dont care" way. It gives that deser vibe, i think with other technique it would Lose that. But Its just a opiniom, maybe im just So used to his regular singin

Josh Homme is very unconventional in his singing and guitar playing. I think you could point to various things he does that would not be considered good/right technique in a traditional sense, but his music is so unique and means so much to so many people... In this sense he is an amazing singer and musician, he is recognisable and so musical with what he does that it begs the question if he would be a 'better' singer if he had a better in the sense of 'cleaner' technique but lacked that all that character and uniqueness. I personally prefer him with all the quirks of his voice and especially his guitar tone and playing (it's also sometimes sloppy in the sense that some bends are off, some chords played with additional strings being played, he even has a 'Weird G' tuning with one g being slightly flat - intentionally!).

Shocked at some of the negativity on here. You did a great job here, I'm a big QOTSA fan but recognise what he needs to work on. Every single singer could do with improvement, and god knows I do! Keep up the good work!

This guy knows his shit but I disagree on the falsetto parts I think they’re perfect and done purposely for the song.

This song is interesting because he could have just written the whole thing to be sung in chest voice. It would have been a lot easier to sing. Those falsetto flourishes give it a lot more charm.

Is Mix voice a head voice without going breathy? With compression? I can to connect the voice, but when I do the compression my larynx lift a little bit, and when I try to lift the soft palate I can’t compress. It’s normal the larynx lift get lift after the passaggio?

You are a better vocalist than Josh but if he decided to do it all opera, it would take away from the performance. I don't really like your suggestions, they rather bore me, but that's why he is one of the most innovative artists of the last 30 years and you have a KZbin channel. Josh was likely hungover before this performance and had to do another in the evening, you critique people's voices from your studio apartment.

You clearly know what you’re talking about, but it comes off very condescending and arrogant to, in reaction to a well-renowned musician, say things like “I’d love to work with you”, “he starts his falsetto too early”, “it would be cooler if...” Yeah, we get it, you know music. Not knocking the whole video, not just trying to focus on the negatives, that just stood out to me.

I find more and more so called "vocal coach reactions" on youtube which are complete shite. Where are their legendary performances in which to criticize? They have none, so they tend to critique and play it off as if they could do it better. Tired of this "vocal coach reacts" bullshit.

Hey man chill... Like who do you think you are? Telling pro singers, not just some vocal teacher, but actual people that made alot of money singing and writing songs and for u to think it would sound better singing another way is waay arrogant and not really right. Im pretty sure he wouldn't be able to teach him anything and why would he ever listen to your advice, come on and give the guy some credit. As if Josh needed a teacher lol. He could teach a teacher in my mind so. What is your next video? Explaining how Freddie Mercury could be a better singer, lol. He doesn't even have a high speaking voice like you say, something might be wrong with your speakers if that's high to you. Btw his timing is perfect....
@ramseyvoicestudio5 жыл бұрын
Hey Nul, if you listened to the video you would see that I always preach that you can't take away what makes a singer unique. That would be financially damaging to their career and you would quickly lose the student. Instead, you have to start with what they're doing well and build more functionality into the voice. In this case, I think Josh could do some work to build his mix voice more.
@NulJern5 жыл бұрын
@@ramseyvoicestudio but just because you think that, doesn't make it sound any better. You could argue that a pro singer probably already tried different technics and teachers, so no matter how much you think you can make him better, i have hard time seeing it. And inspite of all this you say it's is still disrespectful to say it. The arrogance behind you statements is out of line, and it is fine you can't see it yourself, but that doesn't make it right. Josh probably worked on his singing voice all his life and tried everything to sound better and become better as a singer, and then you go on saying he should build his mix voice, as if you know he has not done it already and confirmed the song sounds terrible with a mix voice like you so kindly prove in the video. Get off the high horse, thinking you can improve anybodys singing without knowing them and their history as a singer. Like Josh is almost 50, been singing all his life probably and had success with multiple songs and you seriously think you can teach him anything he has not already tried and confirmed not to work to his liking? What are you? 20? Come on. Like how is people taking you seriously with that kind of statements. Its not only the fact you think you can improve his singing of a song he has written and had success with, but they way you say it is so fucking rude. No matter how great singer yourself is doesn't give you to the right to say whatever like you are better than others. Nothing wrong with commenting on a live performance of Josh but saying he should work on his singing and that would make him or the song sound better is just arrogant as fuck. Is ok for you to think you can make him sound better, but don't say it unless you actually have some credibility to say something like that.

NulJern That’s doubtful.. just from how you’ve pleaded your case. It’s quite obvious you didn’t listen to a word this man said, or only want to hear the negative. He doesn’t want to change anything, he doesn’t want to step on Josh’s toes, and he said outright that it’s all artistic choice - while going into how he would prefer to do it.. You, as a musician, should fully understand that because everyone has a different preference and range in their vocals. You call him out for his ignorance, now I’m calling you out for yours. There’s nothing wrong with what Matt said, it’s all subjective.. and telling the man that you “think” he’s trying to change someone’s singing style is ridiculous.
