Fun fact: Dave Grohl's drumming was tracked in 2 different takes for every song on the album: one take with just cymbals and hi-hats, and another take with everything else. This method makes for more frantic drum patterns and fills across many of the songs!

It's interesting that once you know that the drums and cymbals are recorded separately (presumably to help punch up the drums to get that wide snare sound without the cymbals getting too loud), you can tell that the mixing engineer really pulled the drums up in the mix to feature that driving beat by Dave. One of my all time favorite songs.

The bass player is Nick Oliveri, who actually has lead vocals on a couple tracks off this album. He was kicked out of the band afterward for being too much of a psycho, but in a high-road move he praised the band’s next release even though he was probably a little bitter for not being involved in it. Eric Valentine was the producer and engenier on this album, he started a youtube chanel last year, and explains how he recorded some albums, he had a really long video on this album that was great, but the band asked him to pull it down. Talking about the bass tone, it was very interesting, they recorded some overdubs with a small transistor 8" speaker cheap guitar combo, with volume maxed to distort and mixed that sound in with an ampeg i think it was, and got this great sound. Thy did a lot of experimentation to get good sounds on that album!

Nick Oliveri! What a lineup it was ... I remember when this record came out, they toured to my country (NZ) as part of a big festival, they were slotted in the late afternoon on the main stage, and the set was destroyed by technical difficulties - they walked off, but played later on one of the side stages for about and hour and a half when everyone else was done, well after closing time. They only got off the stage after being told to get off, and then doing three encores to a crowd which was damn near ready to riot if they shut it down. The crowd was frothing; crazy, crazy energy - best gig of my life (I've seen Tool live three times).

One part about Josh Homme's guitar playing style is how much of the polka he learned as a kid still finds its way in. Especially here. He grew up in a small town so the only dude who taught guitar only played polka. So as a result his style grew to be unlike anything I've ever heard.

Bass was Nick Oliveri, no longer with the band (fired). He has been in multiple projects with the singer/guitarist Josh Homme, including a very freaking awesome band called Kyuss. I believe Josh and Nick were the principal song writers for this album and Nick also provides a lot of both backup and lead vocals on the album as well. Kyuss is way more stoner rock, Josh Homme writes some seriously killer riffs in all his projects. Nick unfortunately may suffer from the classic rock n roll "excesses" and that abuse led to a confrontation with Josh, apparently also involved a woman so you can get the idea of how that relationship ended up.

A cool thing that QotSA do when they record drums, including with Dave Grohl on this song, is that each drum & cymbal, or combos of certain drums and cymbals in the kit are performed and recorded separately so there's no "bleed through" between mics on the kit. That gives certain drums/cymbals a unique "isolated" sound, and a different "expression" to the fills. Grohl has talked about how difficult it actually was to perform and record with QotSA.
