Strange... I suddenly crave for samosas... No seriously, being a big fan of Peter Gabriel I am no stranger to these sounds. Since the 1990's L. Shankar, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Sheila Chandra and others collaborated on albums like US (not U.S.), soundtrack album of the "Last Temptation of Christ" and supported Peter on many of his tours.

Consider, that all the highest notes of Salman Ali were done with well connected full voice! In Indian and Pakistani music falcetto or whistle is not considered as a real kind of voice you can use in singing. Because of that the singers exercises hours to push their full voice as high as possible.

Real kind of voice lol Falsettos and whistle aren't a part of Indian classical So Indian singers use head and chest voice However there are contemporary singers who are classically trained like Arijit,sonu, etc. Who uses falsettos too

Indian classical music says if you want to train your throat to it's peak, train your lowest notes hard. It's years of practice and unwavering attention towards their 'riyaz'(self training) and moment to moment attention towards their notes and 'ragas'(basic note structure associated to and understood from nature and elements. Ragas can affect your mood and atmosphere around you.) which unable them to sing such complex songs.

Well. I am a student of Indian Classical Vocal, so I am qualified to provide a plausible explanation to your intriguing thoughts... Unlike the Western style of music, the voice Culture involved in Hindustani classical is simultaneously extensive and intensive.... By prolonged conditioning ( Riyaaz), the vocal cords are made exceptionally flexible to control pitch, voice range, mould different diction styles and render all macro and micro notes with accuracy... SOMETIMES each note is worked upon for months.. notes that are analogous to Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti..... Also you are trained to hit correct notes spontaneously at any moment of time without observable flaws....and rapid transitions... Singing 2 notes in one beat..x4 notes in one beat...x 8 notes in one beat even..... Finally mastering the Ragas ( particular themes with their own set and pattern of notes) to illicit feelings....the listener starts internalising and having a Transcendental experience !! Mastering the rythm across odd and even beats..... Breath control.... Voice Modulation and many more nuances .... It's like a singer applying for a PhD course... that's Hindustani Classical Music Cheers bro 🤟

@@akhilgada602 his voice is naturally higher pitched due to vocal cord size. adam lambert had to train his other registers to hit notes that salman hits with ease. but also adam lambert can sing lower notes than salman with ease. its like how most children/women have higher sitting voices than men

@@lordchold2316 I listened to Adam and I agree, he is a wonderful singer. He is able to sustain chesty head voice as high as G5 for longer period of time than Salman in spite of having bigger and thicker vocal chord than Salman. So overall I completely agree, Adam is a very versatile singer and has bigger range both higher end and lower end than Salman and he is able to sing all kind of music - rock, pop, RB&B, etc. But, what Salman is singing is also incredible given that he is self trained and has not taken any formal training in Indian classical. He is able to sing those difficult fast progression of notes (we call it Aalaap and Taan which is nothing but one sings different combinations of "Do, Re, Mi, ... Laa, Ti, Do" in a fast speed and also it's more improvisation) which are so difficult to learn.

Beth, you should check out the studio version, or an older live version, of Signal to Noise by Perter Gabriel, as it is a strong song on its own, but even better with the awesome traditional vocals by the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Acutually Salman Ali was in his range limit.If you are following him from years and you are also a musician then you should know that Salman Ali’s highest hit note is F#5 and guess what it is more higher than what he hit in this performance.

Well then I guess the range of my ear drums was tested beyond limit. But why to go that far ?? Looking at any top class singer, neither any one goes such high pitch, nor there is any such requirement. Music is not to stretch your vocal cords like chest opener (springs used in gyms to expand chest) 😀😀.

I do really like the pitch/warmth of atifs voice tho, which prolly explains why i actually enjoyed the singer on the left more, personally, tho i can tell the younger on the right is nore gifted with range and natural talent. The guy on left felt like he had more soul.

It's great that you lend an ear to Hindi/Hindustani vocals. As a (25-year+) follower of both Bollywood and Hindustani Classical singing, I must say (assuming you correctly identified which was which) -- Nitinji is the more accurate, more trained, more controlled and more nuanced singer of the two -- and he's way better with the Sargam . Fireworks will get you only so far... but, if it's true that Salman went on to win it, then I guess it pays to wow the judges with the fireworks. Shame, in a way, but still, grand to see it here.
