Nightwish, Epica and Within Temptation means one thing you have excellent taste in music and a great appreciation for musicianship by bands especially LIVE. I would add that Delain with Charlotte should be in that group if you appreciate symphonic metal and love Dutch vocalists (Floor/Nightwish; Simone/Epica; Sharon/Within Temptation; Charlotte/Delain; Anneke/Vuur & Gathering and Dianne/Ex Libris), that doesn't include other great Dutch female vocalists leading metal bands (Burning Witches, etc..). Two good friends that sounded great together, I often say if angels are real then I have heard what they sound like. This was the 2nd duet they did during this show, check out Stabat Mater Dolorosa (kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6LHp3mGd6yBZsU) done earlier in the show. They do these duets often and are involved in other side projects away from their band as well. Great reaction and analysis even as it got very technical, but to me they sounded great together. Loved the fact there was no competition here but rather complete cooperation to create a wonderful sound especially with the symphony and choir to back them up (Epica's special 10th anniversary show thus they went all out).

First, I loved the performance. Second, I think Floor purposefully had herself 'mic'ed down'. She has done this before . This is Simone's band, with Floor as a guest. Simone is strong, but who here thinks Floor couldn't out-power her. It would be inappropriate, rude. Pure class in my opinion.

I agree Floor sounds a little mic'ed down here. Back when Floor was at Revamp Simone came on as a guest for one show and she was barely audible when they were harmonizing. That being said they both gave an awesome performance here and mic'ing down Floor was technically the correct decision from a performance perspective. Floor and Simone are not the "diva" personalities who would get into a competition with each other.

Oh they are great friends and they perfomed together lots of time, in this same show they did Stabat Mater Dolorosa, back in Floor's After Forever days they did Beyond Me (Simone sang the part originally sung by Sharon Den Adel), they did Sweet Curse in Floor's former band ReVamp and they did Follow in the Cry (former After Forever song) during an Epica concert Any of those are spectacular!

You need to remember with this concert Simone was singing fo close 3 hours, Floor had to perform just two songs, the one you listened to and Stabat Mater Dolorosa. Oh, it was in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

@@arnaldotanta3630 three months isn't a problem at all, not for lung capacity nor endurance. After 4-5 months it might be, primarily because the baby will start to push up. Please, do not pretend it is, they aren't invalids when pregnant.

Simone is a Mezzo, I have actually never heard her sung anything above high C live. I think that Floor sounds more comfortable than Simone in the high part of her range by far.

Simone is Floor's BFF for many years and yes they have performed together over the years. I don't remember when Simone's baby was born, but I believe Floor's metal baby (travels with Floor when on tour) is almost 2 years old now.

Native english speakers really strugle to remember to pronounce the "e". One thing Floor does a lot better than Simone is pronunciation. Simone's voice is always beautifull, but often you can't catch a word in 3. There's also their duet in Stabat Mater Dolorosa and Simone singing Sweet Curse with Revamp. Off topic, in another video you asked about how no one mixed opera and metal before Nightwish and why it took so long: the answer is that people where working towards it for a long time and in 1988 Manowar came out with a homage to Joey Dimaio's favorite composer. As a matter of fact, there have been more cross overs with hardrock/metal and operatic music before. Especially after the mellotron was invented, groups started to experiment with classical music. Already in 1969 there are some examples. Ekseption (Haarlem NL) was all about mixing classical music and rock music. Most well known is their version of The Fifth (Beethoven). Also in 1969 Deep Purple made an entire album with the Royal Philarmonic Orchestra (London), Concerto for Group and Orchestra. That was probably the start of what was called "Progressive Rock". Emerson Lake and Palmer, Genesis (with Peter Gabriel as their leadsinger), Jethro Tull and Yes are probably most well known. Also Queen flirted with classical music ( A Night at the Opera). Progressive Rock was actually quite popular in the 70's. Till punk, smashed it all away with the Seks Pistols in 1978.

My other recollection about this particular show (other than Simone being pregnant, which several people mentioned), she was also feeling a bit unwell. She held up for 3 hours like that, which to me is impressive. Their performance of “Stabat Mater Dolorosa” from this same show was definitely stronger for Simone (being that it was earlier on in the show). I’ve seen Epica 4 times since 2010, and last I saw them in 2017 was easily the best she sounded (in person for me). They were touring with another favorite band of mine - Lacuna Coil - and I even got to see Simone have a spectacular duet with Cristina Scabbia that night for “Storm The Sorrow”.

I would love nightwish to do the same thing through a whole tour getting larger halls and using local symphonies and choirs at their shows. No doubt it could be billed the greatest show on earth. Larger halls get paid the same as the venues they normally play and the rest of the money goes to support the choirs and symphonies. It would be great.

The reason you have that impression is that Simone doesnt belt. Her "technique" is a bit weird, she does a "speechy" sound in the middle range and then goes into a classical sounding head voice in the upper notes. Simone has a great timber, but i feel she doesnt have the tools to make full use of it like Floor. I wish she had continued her vocal training and maybe had gone into conservatory, or at least rock academy like Floor.

Simone is more of a lyric soprano, whilst Floor is more of a spinto soprano, meaning that she's got a bit darker timbre to her voice. They are both great singers, with all due respect and it's a pure joy to listen to them. I was a lucky bastard to hear them both live. Due to my work schedule I don't attend concerts as much as before, but this year I'm seeing Jinjer, and Eluveitie and next year Nightwish in Vienna. So having that in mind, I highly recommend you Eluveitie - Rebirth as one of the songs to react to.

Floor is Dramatic soprano, Simone is Mezzo, for starters I have never found any video of Simone signing anything above C6 live, a good expample of a lyric soprano is Tarja. She has a darker tone and a higher vocal range than Floor, Floor's is as high as E6 AND Tarja's goes up to G6 if I remember correctly.

And as I mentioned, I thought Floor was more spinto than a pure dramatic soprano, since she kind of sits in between the lyrical and dramatic (the way I hear it) but I'm an amateur musician, and not an expert on operatic voices 😂. @@Un0rdin4rYPr0gr4mmeR I'm no expert either, and the fact that Floor can hit up to E6 makes me doubt myself cause most dramatic sopranos cannot go higher than C#6, for all i know Floor might be Spinto as you say, since that is the closest to dramatic, but Simone on the other hand is no soprano by any stretch of the imagination, being able to hit C6 live is pretty much a requierement sopranos even mezzos have, and Simone cannot do that, at least not that i know.

I said Simone was a brilliant singer. I just think, in my own opinion, that Floor has a fuller chest voice, a more powerful head voice, and conveys more emotion. It's OK to share a preference. It's "fair" to give an opinion. It's "fair" to have a preference, even when it's between two amazing vocalists. I'm pretty sure neither of them will lose any sleep over what I think anyway man, lol.

i think your next reaction should be from the male side of prog/symphonic. Pull Me Under by Dream Theater, Iconoclast by Symphony X or Kingdom by Devin Townsend Project would be great starters especially if you are primarily looking for robust power vocals

Have you heard Anneke Van Giersbergen? Floor has stated in interviews that it was The Gathering's "Mandylion" album (Anneke's first with the band) that made her decide that she wanted to sing in a metal band. Floor and Simone sound beautiful together in this song...Floor sounds good with anyone though. Cheers!
