As far as I know Arirang is a mythical mountain in early Korean history but no one knows where the mountain exists or where the word truly comes from ... there are many versions of Arirang songs depending on the Region ... this particular version is associated with the Korean War and the suffering pain and loss of the families who have been cut off from one another in the North and South due to the War and since because of the DMZ many of the references are metaphors to the separation and the Korean peoples hopes and dreams for reunification ... there have only been I think 2 instances in the last 70 years where where the North and South have allowed families to meet briefly and this song was sang at both meetings .. also ALi ( Jo ( or Cho ) Yong Jin recently sang this when the South President and his delegation went to the North and met ALi was also invited ... a tidbit ... The S. Korean Ice Dance team used So Hyangs version to skate to at the Winter Olympics in S.Korea ... this song is considered the 2nd National Anthem of the South and every living soul S. Korean knows it ... if you go back and look at the lyrics now you will see them meaning embedded within them ...

I wouldn't say gifted because if you watch her VERY early performances, she was terrible. Terrible. Like everyone, she started from square one. Sure, she was gifted with her vocal range and high tessitura, but to say she is the vocalist she is today because she is "gifted" doesn't bring justice to all the hardships she went through and the work she put in to perfect her craft 😊

I always feel very happy when someone with actual knowledge of vocal pedagogy reacts to SoHyang, especially Arirang, which is my favorite song of hers. Everyone gets obsessed with the mixed B flat 5, but my favorite part is the vocal line where she goes G4 mix to G5 head to G5 mix to a descending run in the span of 3 seconds, so I was happy to see you noticed that part. Sadly there are a lot of individuals these days who claim to be vocal coaches and do reaction videos, but are unable to give any critiques on vocatization and instead try to distract people with small talk about tone, style, arrangement, setting, etc. Glad to see you are not one of those posers.

it's takes sometime to people to really get her singing, Today is the day you finally got her, Congrats...! , not because spent a lot of time saying good things about her, because she was able to take mind away from the logical analyzing on vocals to make feel something that makes you happy, both heart and brain... Her top talent is expressing emotions in detail from start to end making a full detailed story, so forget about your preferred styles and other choices, just listen carefully to what she's singing, the meaning and the emotions behind it, once you get the full story, then you can argue about the vocal techniques she used, how you could do it better, and give more detailed lasting effect than she did, only then you fully see how amazing she is! for me it's as almost as she doesn't have a tone for her, in every song i heard from her, it's just about the song, tone, techniques, all for the song and its meaning, as long as the she can express what she wants, she just changes and uses whatever that works. it might not be the preferred sound to some people, but it doesn't matter since when it's what the best for the song and its meaning, she always had the perfect tone choice and usage, so no problems with her tone whatsoever, just amazed how a human can be that perfect, both vocal ability and intelligence on music. if people could listen and feel the song as the song goes on, not just keep waiting to hear the sounds that you like, you would finally see who she is what she does and why millions of people loves her.
@RetiOrchid585 жыл бұрын
I love her sweet bel canto-esque tone and control, albeit more "pop". But her musicality is super, also, as demonstrated here. In the same way that it's good for those of us who play an instrument like the guitar to know something of playing like one sings, I love it when singers seem to pick just the right notes, no more and no less - even when there's a lot of dynamic there: the technique is very much there, but it's subservient to, subsumed into the musicality, rather than the other way around, and the demurity in that makes the music that much more beautiful...Technique-wise, I've seen it said that the only vocal coach she's ever mentioned having had some lessons with was Seth Riggs, with whom she had but a handful of lessons. I know Roger Love's stress on "middle voice" (I practice his exercises myself) and that he was taught by Seth Riggs once..Whatever teachers she's had, she's clearly practised a lot just like you said; and she attributes her voice to a gift of God..Enjoyable video. :)

I dont like Dimash, I think he is just full of autotune making his voice squeaky thus it sounds higher. Why I said that? An artist from our country was one of their contestants and her voice was so squeaky and thin I did not even know it was her and thought it was totally a different artist until I saw her clearly on video. Don't get me wrong, maybe Dimash has that crazy range but it's enhanced by autotune.

Awesome reaction AND technical breakdown, Coach Beth. Earned an easy sub from me. 😊 I could say this performance is Sohyang's magnum opus. From the supreme control of pianissimo producing one of, if not *_the_* most angelic voices I've ever heard, to the insanely magnificent, clear, resonant Bb5 balanced mix, with ZERO strain, 😲 that I've replayed over and over and over, and still shakes my head every time, and to everything else in between, like agility, transitions, dynamics, the whole gamut. 👍 It is you say, the culmination of tens of thousands of hours of perfecting one's craft. There are videos of her earlier works if someone wishes to make a transformation video of "before/mid/after". Don't get me wrong, she was already good, especially to the majority of layman who can only spot high notes, and think hitting high notes is the be all end all which define a _singer._ Sohyang had the talent for sure. However, talent makes one a _singer,_ hard work makes one a true *VOCALIST.* There are tons of talented, natural born _singers,_ but only a handful of _vocalists._ Talent makes one a fad, hard work makes one be immortalized in history. Sohyang will amaze future generation of vocal pedagogy enthusiasts and experts as one of the technical greats, one of the legendary virtuosi of our time. Sohyang is a beautiful human being in the inside too to boot. Perhaps it's that selfless care for others which oozes out when she "switch on her angel mode" 😂 However, if you need a reminder and want to see her full on "fierce mode", check out her rocking _"Monalisa",_ where she massacred every single note in the 5th octave, especially at the climax, without mercy, still with technical brilliance of course. 😁

Arirang is the most well-known Korean folk song. It’s believed to be first sang over 600 years ago, and passed down from generation to generation. It embodies the spirit of the people of Korea for centuries. Arirang represents the suffering and tribulation (Arirang 'Hill') overcome as people and the nation. If we’re together as one holding hands, we can make it over the hill. Arirang Alone is a modern adaptation of the original song written in the hope of reunification of Koreas. It’s a song of hope and peace. It tells a fantasy of the Island of Dokdo floating in the East Sea all alone singing Arirang. If Dokdo sang Arirang, alone in the Eat Sea, would North and South reunite? Dokdo is in the central location from Mount Baekdu (in northern border of North Korea) and Mount Halla (in Jeju Island, South Korea). Let’s ride a boat together from Baekdu and Halla. When we dock our boats at Dokdo, we’ll witness a new dawn together. The songwriter’s parents had to leave two sons and a daughter in North Korea during the war. His father’s dying wish to him was “when Korea reunite, go find your older brothers and sister and tell them that their parents did not abandoned them”.

I agree with your perception of how the energy shift felt in the first transition. Imho, it follows the line which mentions Dokdo, because when imperialist Japan originally invaded Korea (which, I believe, was the catalyst for what ultimately evolved into the ideological fracture which still separates the North & South)...it was the island of Dokdo. So, for me, the first energy shift seems to represent the invasion...with the violin representing Japan...the chaotic build up represents the confusion & fear of being invaded...the blood curdling scream represents the helplessness experienced by the Korean people...and her interaction (battle) with the violin represents Korea fighting back. Obviously I may be wrong...but that's how it FEELS in my heart EVERY TIME that I hear it.

Sébastien Riviere Hello: Lara is my favorite, too. She’s up there among the legends of RNB. ie Mariah Whitney Celine etc. I’m 73 and during the 1960s there was this one singer that had a rabid cult following. She had the most unique and recognizable voice. Today with social media like Facebook, youtube, instagram, etc her followers around the world would be hundreds of thousands. I believe you will love these 2 songs by her I’m 73 and I would like to turn back the clock to the 1960s Please KZbin: “ Morgana king a taste of honey” ( a bittersweet story-song of unrequited love a promise to return but never does and it’s sad aftermath. Great soulful rendition with fabulous heart wrenching runs/ riffs “ morgana king lazy afternoon” ( first vid posted by terry Shannon) Beautiful beautiful imagery that enhances the already emotionally impactful rendition. I really do hope you are able to take a few minutes to listen to Morgana. Over the years, I’ve listened to those 2 aforementioned songs hundreds of time with no diminution of emotional impact. Also “ prelude to a kiss” and “ fascinating rhythm” All these songs from a 1960s Lp ( CD) arranged by Zito. I must have played the lp thousand of times over a span of 50 years and wore it out. Going to buy the CD. Greetings from SOBE ( South Beach, Florida) Al

I really love your approach to reaction/analysis videos. You catch all the illuminating moments and yet you alternate you analysis with heart-felt appreciation of the music where warranted. Watching your video is like watching parents talking about their adoring child - highlighting the key features and doing in the glow of love. Sohyang's BB5 belt is so unforgettable, her power undeniable and light mix just too beautiful to miss, yet it's satisfying to hear you talk about her control and transition, in particular your very correct assessment on how hard Sohyang had to work on the song to achieve the degree of control. When you get a moment, I'd love to see you take a listen of Sohyang's 2018 masterpiece of "You Raise Me Up" where she rearranged the classic to tell her personal story. Omg you just referenced the LOTR musical soundtrack...I love that musical and I thought that only me and one other friend of mine remembered it... :D She does sound a bit like Laura Michelle Kelly’s Galadriel technique :)

Arirang Song is a 600-year-old Korean traditional song. There are various versions of Arirang songs throughout Korea. In places where Koreans are scattered not only in Korea but also around the world, Arirang's songs spread like their souls, and ethnicities and tribes who had deep exchanges with Koreans can remember Arirang and sing the melody. Let's write down the representative Korean Arirang and its meaning. I feel sorry for my poor English because I turned to a translator, but I think it will be a good reference, so I take courage as a Korean and write it down. Type 1. Arirang, Arirang, Arari It goes over Arirang Pass. If you leave me behind, An outbreak occurs in less than ten miles. Arirang means "I love you so much that my heart aches," and this song can be seen as a one-sided love that only makes me nervous. "Ari" is heartbreaking and painful. 'Rang' refers to a lover.The hidden meaning of 'rang' is Korea. My beloved is leaving over that pass until my heart aches. The man who leaves me will develop an illness in less than ten miles This is not a curse for leaving him, but a very desperate love song for him to come back to him with a disease.

Thank you for the review of ARIRANG. ARIRANG contains a series of mixed emotions, called as a.k.a "HAN" in Korean, such as sadness, happiness, hardness, bittersweet, anger, melancholy and wish/hope all in one as a accumulated blackhole. Since Korea had been invaded by China and Japan for last five thousand years, they underwent so many tragedies being slaved, kidnapped, raped, and murdered. In spite of these, Koreans could overcome against internal and external issues by hardworking while being formed as song formation when they were working. This why ARIRANG feels like a bomb of so many kinds of emotions. I do appreciate to those countries saved Korea from Japan's illegal occupation/colonization. We could not see the light of independence if those countries did not help us against Japan. Thank you, world. Thank you USA.
