Arirang Alone is a modern take on a very old Korean folk song. The original song was about two lovers but this modern version was written by a man who had to leave two grown children in North Korea after the war. This song is about the peace, the war and split between North and South Korea and the longing they have to be reconciled.

It is a traditional Korean folk song that is 100’s of years old but it definitely doesn’t sound like this usually, it is like many other folk songs, very simple & rather ‘ploddy’ but this, as usual, is Sohyang’s arrangement & it has now become more of an anthem. I wish I had a ‘£’ for every time I’ve heard someone say that even though subtitles are provided, they were so ‘in to’ sohyangs performance that they didn’t even bother looking at them. I think this is one of the very best things about sohyang, her ability to make you ‘feel’ when you haven’t the faintest idea what she is singing about. I think this is what seperates the very best singers in the world from the rest. Great reaction again! My advice would be just stay on the sohyang train because believe me, this woman does not do anything other than amazing!! You should check out her more stripped back acoustic performances from the ‘begin again Korea’ series, just to balance the big production numbers with an orchestra that are done for TV.

Absolutely stunning!! An effortless and flawless execution of vocal technique and musicality which is unsurpassed. She is a gift from God. Thank you for the great reaction, really enjoyed it. Keep going with the Sohyang journey, as there are so many more mind blowing performances. Take care.

Arirang has no direct translation to English but the idea it represents is along the lines of very hard work or diligent struggle. The song is based on a Korean folk song that has evolved over a period of 600 years and now is an allegory for their desire to reunite north and south. Sohyang is difficult to rationally explain. She might have died from cervical cancer when she was 20 but credits God with her healing. Yet a bad blood transfusion at the time of the surgery left her with hepatitis B. Normally that is easily cured with antibiotics but this was the rare incurable variety so it plagues her to this day with a compromised immune system and she contracts pneumonia rather often. For a four year period from 2016 to 2020 she was battling it eight different times and was almost out of circulation in the musical community. Thus Sohyang knows what it is to be chronically ill for a lengthy period of time but again credits God with teaching her invaluable spiritual lessons from it. She has largely been fine since then but did come down with covid19 for two weeks in the summer of 2022. Thankfully she recovered well and at the age of 45 sings as excellently today as she ever has. You are right when the thought comes to mind that there is no way this woman is 45! She looks 10 or 15 years younger, at least! But it is true. She was born on April 5, 1978! 🤷♂ Professional "super star" level music producers (David Foster), singers (Michael Bolton and Josh Groban), teachers (Seth Riggs) and vocal coaches aplenty are pretty well stupefied at how much talent is wrapped up in this tiny five foot four inch, 100 pound woman. Sohyang has trained her central nervous system to the point, and developed such articulate muscular control, that her singing technique is perfect. She is considered a master singer. Literally. Again Sohyang gives the credit to the divine entity, stating her voice "is from God." Obviously she has taken her singing talent to the nth degree, and tells others who want to enter the world of professional singing that they must be born with a good voice and then work very hard to develop it. But this barely scratches the surface of who Sohyang is and how talented she is on stage. Her stage presence and body language are unmatched in my experience, much like what Elvis Presley had fifty years ago but different, of course, since she is a sincere Christian woman and believes in presenting herself in modest yet excellent quality theatrical attire and with absolute confidence and purpose at all times. I have also found these high production value South Korean music presentations to be as good as you will find anywhere on the planet. They show Sohyang in the best fashion possible and these seem, to me, as good as you would find at _any_ of the Grammy Awards in their heyday. When you add a Super Star talent like Sohyang to the show, everyone who watches it is quite rightly blown away. 👀😮💥👌😎🎸🎙👽🛸💖💖💖

'Arirang' is a group of folk songs in Korea. They all differ in melody, context and mood region to region apart from the fact they share the word 'Arirang' in the chorus. The word 'Arirang' can mean nothing and everything, and has to be interpreted in the given song's context (it's a bit like the word 'Oom-Pah-Pah' in the musical 'Oliver!'). The most famous version of Arirang is from Seoul region, and it became the favourite of the nation in the 20's when it was sung in then a hit film of the same title. Its soulful simple tune lended itself to be sung in both joyous and sad occasion and with different lyrics. The song went wherever Koreans went during the colonial time - whether as hard labourers to Pacific islands or so-called 'comfort women' to Southeast Asia. The local natives who contacted these Koreans, who were dislocated forcefully by the Imperial Japan, still remember the tune of Arirang after half a century. Now, 'Arirang Alone' is a modern variation of this famous folk tune. It assums a lone voice wishing for the reunification of North/South Korea (hence Arirang 'Alone'), picturing the image of a sea journey from Halla-mountain in the South to Baektu-mountain in the North. The journey is going to be rough (and in this context, 'Arigang Hill' represents the obstacle to overcome), and may be forced to break down occasionally... but the lone voice still encourages to carry on and others to join in hand-in-hand. In this Sohyang arrangement, she turned the simple ditty to a full blown journey - starting off as a somewhat naive, childlike lone voice hoping for the journey to reunification. It soon meets the rough sea and obstacles as represented by the dramatic transition, but, as Korea's modern history proves, she wouldn't give up the spirit and carry on with renewed energy. When the song reaches the chorus of the famous folk tune, which literally every Korean knows, she encourages the audience to join in, symbolically to join in, hand-in-hand, to this journey to reunion. But at the end, she comes back as the lone voice, now somewhat more melancholic because indeed the journey to reunification is still far and rough... but as the closing line says ('We're going over Arirang Hill'), she wouldn't let go of the hope. With this historic and cultural context, one would be able to understand better why this Sohyang rendition of 'Arirang Alone' struck the heart of Korean public. PS. the subtitle that comes with the OG video is pretty bad and incoherent. Unbelievable that it was the job by KBS, the broadcaster itself.

This was a wonderful reaction! You were right about it being an important song to the Korean people (I gather this from watching this performance many times and reading the comments). And you pointed out how So Hyang uses her hands to include all of the audience to get involved, and to connect with her own voice. This is something she often does but not as much as in this performance -- as it is a song meant to unify (I feel). There is just nobody like her that I have come across. I can relate to your feeling chills whenever she is singing. If you are looking for a Christmas song by her there is her version of 'Oh Holy Night' from the I Am Singer 2 TV show. Because of interviews, her singing does not start until a little past the 2:20 mark. And you may want to filter it for copyright rules. I will leave the link should you wish to react to it. It is the best rendition of that song I have ever heard, and I think it came in a time she was much less known (could be wrong). To be there and hear her live must be incredible as it is amazing to hear her on KZbin! kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6jKd2Z9rtGoY5I

Andrea, a charming video. Just a note about Sohyang's hands. She began singing with a Gospel Choir. I have to assume that at some point she graduated to directing the Choir. Why? Because she directs the music almost subconsciously. Now that you're aware, watch her hands. She usually does the musical arrangements for her performances and, I believe a lot of the time, she IS leading the choir and musicians. When she has an Orchestra with a Director, pay attention. He watches her. When she is singing in a duet, her partner watches her. I find it endearing and fun to observe. The other thing to look for is her smile. Breathtaking. Enjoy. Cheers.

Andrea, you should check her version of 'Misty', an old jazz classic by Ella Fitzgerald (Begin Again Korea, ep. 9). Just her voice and a simple keyboard accompaniment. I'm sure you'll appreciate her as a fine jazz singer.

Ive watched all your reactions to Sohyang and i think i know what you like most about her voice so i think you should now check out her duets and see how wonderfully she compliments her partners.WILD FLOWER i think you will enjoy the most but her original song with Petra(whose voice you will also love)is very beautiful too,its a worship song but has a very 90s pop/ R&B sound and is called THE STAR.

Maybe its time to react to an upbeat Sohyang song. :) One in a different genre. I will suggest "Day-Day" performed on Begin Again Korea (do use a filter) This is Sohyang plus the group as its a colab rather than a solo, but I think you will be amazed.

If you like this kind of emotional songs, please try Forestella; a crossover quartet from Korea. I think you'll likeHijo de la Luna, Nella Fantasia, Scarborough Fair, Sound of Silence by Forestella. Maybe Time in a bottle, too. If you try any of this, you'll be listening to other songs too. *Fun little fact: Forestella is famous as practice-freaks. SoHyang said them "You guys sing so good, please stop practicing. " because their waiting space for KBS Open Concert was nearby hers, so their practice sounded over the wall.
