It's hopeful, and sorrowful all at the same time. Lennon always wrote music that was deep, but slightly melancholy. It's basically a Christmas gift to the world. It's not hard be emotional. Because there's always the what if's on the Band getting together had we not lost John in 1980. Even if it was a one off studio album and no touring. Thank you lads for everything. There is a really touching back story. Think of me now and then, my old friend was the last thing John said to Paul as Paul left the Dakota not long before John’s death. You can google the article and the eerie coincidence of Carl Perkins including the same phrase in a song he wrote a few years later to thank Paul for his hospitality at the end of an 8 day visit. It’s like there was some sort of cosmic thread connecting this song, the parting moment at the Dakota, Carl Perkin’s visit and the eventual discovery of the demo. It’s like the tape needed to be found, and how ironic that Peter Jackson would be responsible for finding John’s precious voice for one last Beatles recording.

But they had the tape since 1994. It had 4 songs on it, Real Love, Free as a Bird, Grow Old With Me and Now and Then… the first two were done as Beatle songs for Anthology, Grow Old With Me had been released by Yoko on Milk and Honey and Ringo would record it not too long ago and Now and Then was so bad with the sound that Harrison called it rubbish so they shelved it until technology was able to separate John’s voice from the backing music.

Thank you for your moving reaction to this final Beatles song. Hearing John's voice sing a new and beautiful song was so emotional for me. And then to see George play the guitar. It brought them all 'back to life' for a time. Hearing that John's last words to Paul were 'Remember me old friend, now and then' makes this song even more meaningful and explains the reason Paul didn't give up on it. Paul and Ringo singing in the present day is so wonderful. I became a Beatles fan at age 13 when I first heard I Want to Hold Your Hand on the radio (before they arrived in the US for the Ed Sullivan show). It's hard to explain how they changed the world from the conventional boring 'respectable' society to a new freedom of expression including in clothing, hairstyles etc. I went with a group of friends to see A Hard Day's Night at the movie theater. When the movie started a teenage boy stood up and asked the audience to make an agreement to scream through the film the first time, but for the next screening we should actually listen to the movie--and we did! My sister and I got to see the Beatles perform at a stadium during their last tour. I'm sure many fans like me think of the Beatles as family. The ending of the video showing them at different ages gave me chills. Thanks again for your reaction.

This also makes me a little sad since John & George are no longer with us (John was murdered in 1980 & George died of cancer in 2001). But I like the video showing them all together. I am sure Paul & Ringo loved doing this tribute & it must have brought back a lot of fond memories for them. My mother assembled John Lennon’s, 1964 325 C-64 “Miami” Rickenbacker Guitar. My mother... Dorothy J. Tandle “Dotty” was working at (RIC) Electro Strings Rickenbacker Guitars back in February 1964 in Santa Ana California. There was only 10 employees at the time and two woman. Mom was the first woman factory worker hired at Rickenbacker. Francis C. Hall, CEO of Ric had the idea to meet with the Beatles when they came to do the Ed Sullivan Show and give them some new guitars. Mr. Hall gave Harrison a new twelve string guitar when he met them. (assembled by Dotty) When Francis C. Hall got back from N.Y., after talking to John, Paul and Ringo he had a new guitar made for John. F.C. Hall presented Lennon with a new 325 to replace his road weary 1958 one during the group's first trip to New York City. Rush shipped to the Hotel Deauville in Miami where it was used for the second performance in "Ed Sullivan Show" on February 16th. Nicknamed at the factory… “Miami Special” John used the new guitar on The Beatles second Sullivan appearance and on the group's subsequent tours and albums. The phone rang at our house at 6:10AM with the GM of Ric Ward Deaton asking if my mom could come in ASAP to work on a special rush order guitar My mother was asked to follow Lennon’s Custom guitar from start to finish. This was the Black & White semi-hollow bodied “Miami” model (serial number db122, d=1964, b=Feb.). After the woodshop cut out the body, she sanded the body, then worked on the neck & fret board, then she assembled the guitar after the finish was applied. She did all the work herself. She did the same for many custom orders at that time. She was trained in all areas except the wood shop and finishes. She did all the sanding, fret board assembly, hand cut the pick guard, electronics soldering and put all the other pieces on John Lennon’s Custom 325. John’s 325 was the first one with the fifth black tone knob. Mom said she was surprised at how small the guitar was and asked if it was a child’s model because it is so little compared to the Ric Bass.. She liked John’s guitar because it didn’t have an f hole or edge binding to fuss with. I don’t know how long it took to assemble the guitar, but I know she said it is all that mom worked on that day in February 1964. After finishing the guitar, she gave it to the tuner/inspector. He was a good friend and gave mom a ride home three times per week. He asked my mother “Since you built it, what song would you like to hear?” My mother said…“Peanut Butter And Jelly”. That was a song she wrote and the tuner knew the cords. My mother sang the song as it was being played. SO… The very first song ever played on John Lennon’s famous 325 was a song my mother wrote about the messes I made as a child. There is a “GREEN” check mark inside the guitar. The guitar assembled in February 1964 by Dotty custom made specially for John to replace his 1958 model 325 “Capri“ was dropped and the head was damaged, later repaired.. It now hangs on display at the Rock N Roll HOF. It is priceless. John’s “Miami” was replaced with a “1996” Fire-glo model from the Rickenbacker London sales rep/dealer Rose-Morris Ltd. My mom “Dotty” made most of special order famous RIC guitars of that era. Harrison‘s, Lennon’s, Townsend’s & McGuinn’s 12 strings. The first time she had to put strings on a 12 string with the double tuning head style she had to ask Ward (GM) how to do it and it took him three tries to get it right. Harrison’s 360/12 was the second 12 string ever made, but the first with new tuning design and the model the rest were made after making it the real first Production Model. At their New York meeting, Lennon asked Hall to make him a twelve-string model to match his 325, and in March '64, Rickenbacker shipped a 325-12 Jet-glo guitar to him in London. “Dotty gives our guitars the woman’s touch, that’s why they are so sexy looking” - Ward Deaton GM at RIC 1964

We are incredibly fortunate that George and the other three laid down so many superb tracks for this in the 1990's. That is the icing on the cake, having that George Harrison guitar work. Also fortunate they had so much high quality 16mm movie footage from a 1967 project. Jackson was able to cut that 1967 footage into the 19990's and 2023 footage in such a way that they really do look like they are all in the same room together, looking at each other, and interacting. This is the perfect last song.

Paul has said that these were the last words John said to him the last time they met in person in 1976 ‘Think of me now and then’. John then wrote the song in 1977 so it was clearly an idea going around his head. He then labeled the tape ‘For Paul’. We’ll never know for sure if he wrote the song for Paul, if it was thinking of a future collaboration, or if he just wanted Paul to hear it. Either way it feels so right that Paul, along with George and Ringo get to finish this off for him!

Sad but beautiful. Hearing John was like saying hello to an old friend after many years. Nice to see George as well. Thanks to Paul and Ringo for doing this. A moving farewell to the greatest band ever.

When I heard “then and now” is coming out, I was disappointed as I wanted to “grow old with me” instead. As the song was about to come out, I was expecting NOTHING. On the day it came out. I listened to it and it was better than I expected. Then the next day when the video came out for “now and then”, I fell in love with the song as the song grew on me and it will always be one of my favorite all time Beatles song, as the message of the song, the magic of the song, the love of Paul to complete the song of his best friend John is heartwarming and finally, hearing John’s voice is priceless. Should we all not look in our heart and remember our forgotten loved ones, every now and then.

Grow Old With Me had been done both by Lennon (Milk and Honey) and Ringo as apparently John had written it for him to record as on the tape John says “this one is for Richie,” as per an interview with Ringo himself.

Given the thousands of hours the boys spent together, between recording in the studio, and back stage or travelling. They often clowned around, and talked about the past etc etc. With many cameras to hand, and professionals filming them, there must still be many many rolls of film of them, in many collections, still not seen by their fans. Examples are seen in this video.

Beth- you rock. What a wonderful, genuine reaction to a truly beautiful dirge. Now and Then takes me through a plethora of emotions and to my surprise - I tear up each time I hear it. I watched The Beatles live on The Edge Sullivan Show and later met Mr Sullivan. Do you know what my reaction was to that? “Wow, I just shook hands with the guy who shook hands with The Beatles.”

This video and performance is typical Beatles ... just wonderful. I keep viewing and listening every day. We in our mid-70s have a lot of memories of Beatles music... so joyful we were when a new Beatles single or album was released. We would listen countless times ... and then over decades of our lives... great to see that some of the younger generations have discovered the Beatles timeless music, from their early days all the way through their catalogue and until now .

This has brought me to tears. I'm feeling so many different emotions happy and sad. I recall being 8 years old when they came onto the Ed Sullivan Show. I remember my dad's reaction when He saw them. I was sitting on the floor in front of the TV and dad shouted out, turn that crap off! I'm not watching those long-haired freaks but my older sister's convinced him to let us watch! I was a big John Lennon fan till the day he died!

A wonderful video that brought me tears of melancholy, but also of joy. My brother, who was 12 years older, was in contact with the Beatles for 6 weeks in the first half of the 60s, as he worked at the Top Ten Club in Hamburg, where the Beatles also performed. I was 10 or 11 years old at the time. When the Beatles' first records were released in Germany, he bought them immediately and I also had the pleasure of listening to their music every day. Since then, music from many different genres has accompanied me.

Yes, Apple asked Peter Jackson to do the video. He was initially reluctant as he'd never done a music video. But since he was a massive Beatle fan, he agreed... and this is the result. Cheers.

Apparently on the box that the cassette came in was written...For Paul. This is bitter sweet as I know it's the last Beatles song. That Beatles bow gets me every time. In the 80s I was privileged to be in a Beatles tribute band playing the George Harrison part. At the end of every show we would do that Beatle bow.

Emotional, eerie emotional, tears of surprise and joy came into my eyes!! The Beatles are there and they are not, the young ones sharing the stage and the studio with their old counterparts; the last Beatles' song came into being after their 1970's break-up. I've got overjoyed and melancholic more than nostalgic with the Now and Then masterpiece, I'm 55 y.o. now and been a Beatles fan since 1981, history passes by, and the Beatles are part of me to the end! Greetings!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I was -10 years old when they were introduced to the world. I grew up listening to my mom's 45 of I Want To Hold Your Hand/I Saw Her Standing There, Meet the Beatles LP, and Rubber Soul LP in my room. I lost my mom in September of 2021, and this song, as well as Blackbird, Yesterday and In My Life instantly connect me to her (and reduce me to tears). ❤

"I don't even want to analyze this." If I've learned one thing this past couple of years is that music has this power to bring out feelings you've been surpressing. Sometimes all you can do is feel it. It will make more sense than analyzing the lyrics or whatever.

I'm usually not a big fan of these kind of projects. It can easily become a "milking a dead cow"-thing. But they did a real great job making it a "legit" Beatles song, and it feels like it was a labour of love. So much incredible talent coming together - even separated by lots of years - for a last time is just heart-warming.

I'm so glad you are doing this. Now if we could only get Elizabeth over at the charismatic voice to do it, I'd be in heaven. But yeah that's Peter Jackson. And yeah the Beatles didn't know what they were doing technically early on, it's so funny because the critics were all saying Oh my God these guys are geniuses, they're using Aolean cadences! And I remember reading a quote from John that said that he and Paul were just laughing their asses off at it because they didn't even know what that was, lol. The Beatles were known for always pushing the boundaries with technology and really lots of things, so I think it's just so cool that they go out with a bang doing exactly the same thing now for their final offering.

The melody reminds me of what was presented on Double Fantasy, it has a beautiful minor(?) run that I feel was in a number of songs on DF (eg Woman). It’s really introspective and connected in a way that his earlier writing could not be because he hadn’t found his spiritual home just yet.

Thanks Beth. Your choice to let this song stand on its own and above analysis was clearly the right call. Enjoying the ride is all that matters as are the memories it creates for those of us were, are and always will be fans of the four lads from Liverpool. Part of the emotional tug this song exerts on any Beatle fan is trying to parse John's intent. It's clearly love letter, but is when he sings "Now and then, I miss you," who or what is he really talking about? Is it Paul...is it Paul, George and Ringo...is it their legions of steadfastly loyal fans, does it have something to do with Yoko or is there some other meaning that's so personal, we'll never really know That being the case, I'm happy just to sit back enjoy this beautiful and haunting song...the last song The Beatles will ever do.
