I served for more than 60 months (5 years) in combat, during 4 deployments. To unwind, in particular when I could not sleep, I would seek solace in the powerful voices of those magnificent vocal artists! So too when I was fighting forest fires. I remember being in the Methow Valley in the northern Cascade Mountains; it seemed the World was ON FIRE from Horizon to Horizon in the pre-dawn darkness! This song is credited by many Irish and Brits for helping to stop the guerrilla terrorist war between the Catholics and the Protestants in Northern Ireland. All were holding grudges about their relatives being murdered by both factions. As The Cranberries explain, it all started more than 100 years ago. It was overdue that both sides forgave each other and moved on from the violence and murder. Love the Cranberries!

I first heard this song about a decade ago in a history class. My teacher was a fan and to accompany a lesson about the relevant conflict in Ireland, he played this song. It really stuck with me. Probably helped me pass the test on the subject. I'd only learned of her death recently, but it really changed how I react when hearing this song. I don't like it any less, but an extra element of sorrow that wasn't expressed in that way before just permeates throughout it. I also found the cover that Bad Wolves made of this after learning of her death and I started crying listening to it since they said she'd intended to provide some form of performance as part of it, but died that very day. I was kind of old school technologically, at the time, but when this came out, they appeared on Saturday Night Live. The TV I owned had an auxiliary set up and my stereo had an auxiliary set up, so I connected the two with patch chords. When they performed Zombie, I was able to record the SNL performance onto cassette tape. I had that for quite awhile. I bet not too many people had a cassette recording of that live performance. She just died way too young, and this was, definitely one of the most unique songs in rock. I don’t know if it can ever be recreated. That vocal technique is not completely unique, but it is hard to do, and she mastered it. I knew there was some reason that her death is extra memorable to me, and researching, I saw that she died the day before my birthday. I wish she wasn’t gone, but, that day of her death is an important day in the US. It is the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. She picked a day that millions will remember. Just another reason to remember a talented singer.

Interesting to compare how his voice has held up, but also changed. I finally figured out the yodel (with my male vocal chords) after struggling for years to figure out this song. It was your analysis of it as typical metal scream. Zoh-um-bae (sharp inhale) Eh. (s.i.) Eh. (s.i.) Eh. (s.i.) She's basically hyperventilating back and forth to make the Irish yodel mid lyric. A half-note of a metal scream, if you prefer. Thank you so much for accidentally teaching me something I've been dying to learn. The algorithm did some good work today.

@@MTW3095 A thick Scottish accent and a thick Irish accent are very easy to discern, although I personally wasn't quite sure what Beth's was.

I'm American, but my paternal grandparents were from County Kilkenny. I remember many years ago seeing the film The Untouchables with Sean Connery. They kept calling him "that Irish cop" and I'm thinking that's not an Irish accent. Apparently Sean does one accent, Scottish.

Dolores fue increíble cantante irlandesa!!! Limerick debe estar orgulloso de haber visto nacer a una estrella que se adelantó a su tiempo. Gracias por la reacción Beth 😍😘😎🤘

The thing she do when she sings is built around a yodel style you find in their local folk music. She tweaked after mastered it and made it a The Cranberries trademark. Many have tired to cover her and tried to get that style but I think all have failed. Her voice, techniuqe are pretty unigue,

That is such a tight set for a live recording. I thought it was a music video until the title said it was live. Very rare to hear something played and sang so well on stage. This song has also changed meanings for me after having a child. Beautiful

If the Cranberries had become popular in 2019, the studio would have Autotuned all the awesome right out of Dolores.

This post made me quite sad cuz it’s the truth. Great (and sad) observation.
@joematthews60635 жыл бұрын
Yeah, no. That's completely incorrect. Most likely they would be an indie rock band, since major labels don't normally sign bands with this type of music these days. On top of that, indie rock bands aren't typically known for using autotune. Autotune is something used by pop and hip hop music, which this is very clearly not so your comment makes no sense anyway. Not trying to be a dick but I am so sick of misinformed, musically illiterate nostalgia-baiting comments like this one popping up on every KZbin video for every single song that came out before 2004. Cool, you like older music better than newer music. Doesn't mean everything today is "autotuned", that is so fucking ignorant and insulting to every current artist making actual good music right now.
@mikeredrugger5 жыл бұрын
@@joematthews6063 I could go on to list several people who are using auto-tune in the rock/metal side of things as well. Auto-tune is actually very pervasive, it doesn't have to be the "auto-tune the whole thing" line you see in pop/hip hop but you don't get to hear the small imperfections in singers voices that make them human in almost anything done today. I would love to spend more time on this topic but it's nearly 5 am and I have to get some rest for several videos today I need to shoot.
@madzec4 жыл бұрын
In general it is band itself who decide would they Autotune the song, they would have the option to do it but it would not been mandatory. There are lots of people who use it but it is their choice. I personally think that Dolores would never agree on something like that. But what I am convinced in is that they would have lots of problems making the video for official version of the song now released. It would be "too problematic"....
