Oh my gosh. When I discovered this band back in the 90's I fell so hard for them. She was/is a treasure. I was wrecked beyond words when she passed. I never saw them perform live...that makes me sad. I've got all their recordings and live performances...I sometimes binge on them. What a wonderful singer and group. I'm glad their music lives on eternal. I get so emotional when I think of her...

I love that She lets her Limerick accent come through in her vocals. There are so many bands from the U.K. and Ireland where the singer sounds like they’re from the U.S.
@CommanderCodyChipless

Its just because the accent is too impractical for singing.

For some reason the Irish and British accents diminish in most songs. They talk with their Euro accents but sing with a Mid Atlantic States US accent.
@Dreyno
@Dreyno Ай бұрын
Americans mostly don’t sound American either. It’s the mechanism of singing. Because the US produces so much music people think everyone is copying their “accent” but it’s just how singing makes you sound. Very few people retain their speaking accent when singing. Even country singers from the Deep South are putting that twang on when they’re singing.
@CommanderCodyChipless
@CommanderCodyChipless Ай бұрын
@@Dreyno well the america accent. Usually we think of the the southwest American accent. Which largely over time has been taking over most of America in terms of accents. As within the 2010s I moved to Texas and realized most people in Texas do not have a southern accent. I digress, my point being that the southwest accent (what I have) is very flat and in regards to other accents especially European ones. Most European accents, including Australia, have a lot of rounding of the syllables and a lot of inflections. It's hard to describe through text, but that's why when singing most people seem like they are using an American accent because of how singing reinforces you using less inflections to stay in key with the music.
@Dreyno
@Dreyno Ай бұрын
@@CommanderCodyChipless The vast majority of popular music, be that pop, rock, indie, metal etc. produced outside of North America is from the U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand or Sweden. There are plenty of flat accents within those territories. The problem is that most Americans think that unless you sound expressly “foreign” you are copying their accent. And lots of people in those other countries who also think you should sound distinctly like where you’re from. It’s not how singing works. People almost never identify where a band are from without Googling it.

Dear Beth, I really like your educational work. You teach me how Irish culture and especially its music work. That means a lot to me. You know, I am a 59-year-old German guy who loves Irish culture and, of course, the music. I find your explanations about singing and the techniques Dolores uses very exciting, and it makes me happy to dive so deeply into her music, thanks to you. Thank you for that.

Here in South Africa in the 90s we had a radio DJ (Barney Simon) who played alternative music. T was so beautiful to hear this song and Dolores's angelic voice sandwiched between the Crash Test Dummies and Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, etc.

I am here because I am compelled to be here. When she first became big with songs like Zombie she brought her heritage with her to the spotlight. She also had an important story to tell. You could say that storytelling was how music was born and so she carries on a timeless tradition. It makes me have a reverence for Irish culture. I have held these feelings since first hearing her, until now. She made her nation proud. Also, thank you for adding your own explanations in your video.

Lovely song. Dolores and Marie from Roxette are the two female voices from the time I was young that went silent too early. As always, thanks for your in depth explanations. Besides my interest in Rock and Pop, I was always a fan of Irish and Scottish Folk, so there is a lot here that I can relate to but never recognized as such. Greetings from Germany ❤

I've struggled with anxiety and depression all my life and I feel that in Dolores' songs. It's so sad what happened to her. I believe she was living in my country, Canada, at the time. Without really knowing it, her music and the music of many women in the 90s (most of them Canadian like Alanis Morissette, soul singer Amanda Marshall, Sarah McLachlan, Chantal Kreviatzuk and others), many of them singing in an almost Celtic style, were the soundtrack of my teenage years. I'm sure this song played many times on my radio as I was driving with a buddy to pick up our girlfriends on rainy Friday nights (I live in British Columbia) after school. 90s female voices are so nostalgic for me. They owned Canadian radio back then, and I'm not just talking about pop singers.

I try to stay away from hyperbole, but this is perhaps the most beautiful song ever to me. The musicianship is sublime and Dolores' voice is ethereal, but also part of it is because it takes me back in time to my joyous university days in the mid 1990's. I got the see The Cranberries live years later at First Avenue in downtown Minneapolis, standing right next to the stage, and I touched Dolores' hand. (pausing with eyes closed before resuming typing) When I heard the news of her death as I drove in the beautiful Olympic Peninsula of Washington State , I had to pull over my car and sit safely until I processed it. profound beauty and sadness blurred for those moments.

Her band was just perfect fit for her. While playing very competently, they allowed her to perform the song with all of the softness and then a bit more out front, without stepping on her. As a former sax player in a working rock band, I know how some groups just all want to be at the front all the time. Very unselfish group. So sad that we lost her way too early. Just imagine the music we missed.

Keening comes from the Irish word for crying, 'caoineadh'. In the 7th century wealthy families used to employ people (ladies) to cry at the funerals of their loved ones. People crying uncontrolably at funerals was a sign of how much the deceased was loved
