I miss Peter Steele. He’s a big influence for me vocally, and he was such a unique artist. It’s a shame that he passed away so young after so much effort to get sober.

I'm glad you've decided to give Type-O another listen. Not only was Peter a good bass singer, a lot of the songs he wrote had hints if not blatant levels of pitch black humor which I definitely appreciated, even if a lot of people I knew didn't. He was 6"8" and about as broad as he was tall, so I suspect that he was also gifted with larger vocal cords.

Yeah, Peter was a Big guy so he naturally had a low and larger larynx. Even his normal speaking voice was bass. And on stage his build gave him this god like presence even though he had stage fright. When he was ON it was magic. Smaller venues were where he excelled. I had the pleasure of seeing Type O Negative at the Palace in Louisville Kentucky. It is larger than a nightclub but smaller and more intimate than an arena. He was on that night. I had never heard of them before that night and I left the show in Love with his voice and their sound. When I got October Rust they sounded exactly like the CD. I was hooked. He is SO terribly missed.😢

Why… WHY…. Is it that EVERY TIME someone reacts to ANYTHING Peter did I end up in tears…. What a LEGEND. Probably because I related so much to his stories about women, love, and our love for Mother Earth. I am a Green Man. I worship the woman. And I am dark with my humor😎 I connected so much that I have all his recordings on vinyl, I’m tattooed with ToN symbols…. Yeah, Peter touched me…. Not like that.

I'm glad you brought up his stage fright and anxiety. He hated playing live and early on had to be convinced to go on tour. He basically came to view it as a necessary evil as part of being in a successful band. He would have been perfectly happy just living in his parent's basement and making album after album there without having to play live. It's said in his biography that often times they wouldn't even bother doing a sound check. I was lucky enough to be a fan of theirs when they were still active and got to see them play live a few times. I have to say, despite all of what I just said I never would have guessed any of it at the time. They always sounded great when I saw them. By all accounts Peter was one of the nicest people you'd ever meet. He is greatly missed... RIP

Peter Steele was such a massive influence on the Doom-Metal, Hardcore-Punk, Goth-Death Rock scenes. Peter was a NYC legend hailing from the Borough of Brooklyn. He started his illustrious career with the great Crossover Metal-Hardcore band, Carnivore. They were a fixture at legendary Brooklyn music venue, L'Amour's. Peter was an amazing songwriter & bassist. Everybody who knew him or casually met him all say that Peter was the nicest, thoughtful & generous man. We who benefit from standing on the shoulders of giants! Peter Steele is greatly missed.

I had the chance to see them 3 times. They played shows for several years, early 2000's 2days before Halloween in Saratoga. The audience would chant "you suck", he came out and greeted us "well f' you too" then jam. AMAZING SHOW!! At the end of the show they threw out dozens of rolls of toilet paper and the whole audience was TP'd.

05:20 "It's about the size of the dog" might be the most accurate description of why Pete was unique. Not just very tall, but a big dude, like a wrestler. Wide shoulders, long neck, big head and mouth. He was a human contrabass. I mean, he could hang one around his freakin shoulders and play it like a bass guitar! Tragic loss for the metal community, then and still now. Saw them several times on festivals and house shows. Awesome memories, TON on a stage like this, in the dark, was just magical. RIP Peter, and scare Lemmy today!

As a big guy myself, we tend to shut down our emotions because of the role that is forced onto us but that emotion is still there and effects us, even when we don't notice it/feel it and so when something throws us off that path we were going, it can make it very difficult to regain that path.

Some kids were kicking up dirt and sod in the back and throwing it around, and he stopped to yell at them "Stop throwing dirt or I'm gonna come down there and kick all your asses." They sure as hell stopped. Even way at the back he was an imposing figure. He was so broad and hulking he looked even bigger than his 6'8".

My friend has hung out with the guys from Type O, and the guys from The Misfits back in the early 90's (especially Jerry Only, and his dad at his machine shop) . Let me just say, my friend punched Glenn Danzig in the face for being a dick at a rehearsal, but I never heard my friend talk anything bad about Pete and the guys. According to him, Glenn Danzig's mom was a lawyer and fucked The Misfits out of a LOT of money.

I saw Type-O live maybe 10 times. They were great every time expect for the last time I saw them. Peter was extremely fucked up that night on either drugs or his typical bottle(s) of red wine. He got sober after this and then unfortunately passed away. They are my favorite band of the 1990’s, and it sucks that the final time I saw them wasn’t great. Blood Kisses and October Rust are two incredible albums that stand the test of time even as I continue to listen to new music it’s worth going back to these classics.

Fun fact about Peter Steele; he posed for Playgirl, for the female attention. He just forgot that most females aren't so visually inclined as males, and homosexuals are male. So after the first shock of being a sex symbol for the gays, he laughed at it, and saw it as a complement when men "offered" themselves to him.

Excellent choice for your wolf theme. In fact, to me it just might be essential. Though I’m biased as a big fan of the band. What you said about the lowest voices possibly having the most range was similar to a thought I once had. Basically, your register is already at the bottom. So maybe there’s a chance to be able to cover all the space above it. At any rate, this nails the wolf theme and also fits the month of October quite nicely.

I love how so much of his style (which is very unique), was deliberately just an F-you to critics. "You need to drops your "R"s at the end of your words, a hard R is an ugly sound that doesn't project as well" So he rolls his Rs very blatantly, in a loud and overly dramatic fashion. "You need to drop your accent and annunciate better" He doubles down on the Brooklyn accent and even turns it into a joke in his music. Any time an "expert" told him what to do, he did the exact opposite. FYI, Kenny for Type-O (who did a lot of backup vocals) has a new project, "EYE AM". Worth a listen, he sounds a lot like Chris Cornell in that, but heavier.

i saw Type O five or six times and feel really lucky about that. But the last couple times, Peter wasn't doing well. It was clear his depression was overtaking him. The last time, he went through several bottles of wine on stage and ran offstage a couple times to throw up (which he told the audience). That was only a few months before he died. This selection seems to be on the cusp before that tragic downhill slide. So yeah, even though it's still impressive, it's not even close to his best.

worth considering that he's probably drunk there he tended to be very anxious on stage and drank a lot to get over it Edit: just got to the part where you actually see him drink wine... so yeah he's probably drunk in this

In the song "In Praise of Bacchus" (same album) I think Pete hits the lowest notes ever. Truly missed

“28th day, she’ll be bleeding again” “When there’s iron in the air A rusted incense Woman may I know you there” “Don’t spill a drop, dear Let me kiss the curse away Yourself IN MY MOUTH Will you leave me with your taste” If that doesn’t get you wet, you’re as dead as Peter….😂

If she did, she didn't let on. That's why I was surprised that she did this song. Perhaps sometimes ignorance is bliss. Fun fact, the rest of the band were shocked when Peter unveiled this song to them for the first time. They were like We're really going to do a song about this? O-kaaaay.

I love how us DEEP Type O Fans come with “fun facts” to the comment section.😂 Like… fun fact… despite his 12 inch member… the editors at Playgirl had to airbrush in another inch or two because it looked smallish on his 6’8 frame….(rumor has it, anyway😂😂😂)

Pete was a big dude, I mean actually he was quite large. Might have something to do with his vocals being so deep.
