In my opinion TOOL has one of the strongest discographies of any modern musical act. Especially amongst those still relevant. They have consistently delivered diverse, progressive, and a "unique to them" sound without ever sacrificing artistic expression. Every song sounds like tool, but in every song you get lost in the complexities of the music and are lulled my Maynard's vocals. You are somehow always locked into a groove with the weirdest disconcerting time signatures, and your ears will never get tired of it.

Man, I totally get what you mean about not being able to articulate how this song makes you feel. It’s equal parts disturbing and entrancing, structured and dissonant. You feel uncomfortable, but you’re so mesmerized by what you’re hearing and seeing that you just let it happen and continue to experience it. To me, as one who’s fortunately never struggled with addiction, this piece is a perfect sonic representation of what I imagine addiction feels like.

First time I heard Tool I was cramped into the rear jump seat of a early 90’s Toyota pickup. Three of us heading out of town for work. Middle of summer, the truck was black and the AC sucked in those things. One of the rear tires was “out of balance” so if he hit 60 it would vibrate like a bastard. He kept hitting sixty then backing off. Over and over. I already didn’t like the fucker driving but an hour in I wanted to beat the shit out of him. Then he popped in Undertow on those shitty factory speakers with just a cheapo deck and Radio shack sub at my feet adding to my cramping (probably the worst car stereo setup in the history of man). At first thought “what is this dogshit? Can’t even hear the fucking singer. Mumbling son of a bitch.” Part way through Intolerance I thought it was maybe not bad. Prison Sex came on and halfway through I thought they were pretty good. Then the breakdown and I thought “this drummer kicks ass”. Then Sober punched me in the face and I was hooked. No bullshit I remember every bit of my thought process during that whole album. When it was done I told him to play it again. He said “fuck that” and loaded Primus Seas of Cheese which I had never heard either. That asshole had some damn good taste in music.

For Starters to really get a clue, i never recommend the overcomplicated songs for TOOL. Best starter song in my opinion is "The Pot"(Maynard sings higher then usual on this track), short song for Tool but every musician get its shining moments and you didnt get bloated by to many changes and polyrythm. It starts the hunger for more and you search for new songs. After I recommend: Parabol/Parabola(ALLWAYS TOGETHER WITHOUT PAUSE), The Grudge(Obvious for the Looooooong shout at the end), Vicarious, Forty-six and two, Schism, Lateralus, Right in Two, Jambi. Have fun on the ride ;)

I feel so lucky to have grown up listening to them. I discovered them when I was 12 and while my tastes have meandered quite a bit I always come home.

Maynard is such an animated vocalist and it really brings the emotions of the song through even more when you see them live. Absolutely stunning band.

Maynard James Keenan, the singer, also sings for A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. I'd highly recommend checking out both, as well as more Tool. The evolution of his music, even though he doesn't write the lyrics for APC, is astounding. Maynard will be on the list of Musical Gods right next to Trent Reznor.

You had me until mentioning Trent Reznor; different tiers. Both are great, but this is about vocals not composition

Trent Reznor? 😂😂😂 wtf? A guy who mostly uses synths instead of actually playing music is a musical god? Okay 🤣🤣

Parabol/Parabola never ceases to bring me to tears. I have never had music move me as much as Tool’s does. Pure, primal, and doesn’t hold back. It seems like they know exactly what emotion they are trying to invoke from the listener. They really are a tool for whatever you happen to need it for.

I absolutely love your articulate analysis of these songs. Very relaxing and interesting at the same time. And reliving these songs really brings back the goosebumps.
