I don't know about any formal training, but after being on a singing competition, one of the judges, Gary Valenciano, took Katrina on as one of his backup singers. He has been a fixture in the Philippines entertainment industry for years. For a performance every vocal coach has loved, see his Wish Bus cover of Chick Corea's "Spain".

I don't know about training but before when I used to compete, I started at 3 years old. I sang and dance wherever I can. Doing chores I sang. And i realized this, eversince I can remember, I was encouraged by my family and the whole community to perform to entertain everyone. I just realized I am doing the same to my nephews. All of the can carry a tune. They started humming and swaying even before they can walk. Music was introduced to them even before they were born. And Filipino families are like that. Great job, guys. You inspire me to...open a bottle of merlot. haha. As for training, well, TWO major coaches here in the Philippines: Mr. Karaoke and Ms. Talent Contest. Not kidding. It's not like over there in Merca and in Europe (I've lived in both for decades) where you just save up a little bit a month for a couple of voice lessons every weekend. Very, very little of that here. They have something better--- the ubiquitous karaoke bars and the household Magic Mic. You pick a ballad, most often power ballads from the 80s and 90s, you grab the mic, and you sing your heart out in front of your friends and strangers alike--- several times a week. And most of the time, they trash-talk the crap out of your performance. But in a good way. I thins this is better than running through your larynx calisthenics in a sterile classroom setting. Oh, and In between songs, you drink gin or rum or beer while listening to your friends go through their repertoire. It's a cultural thing. You should try coming over and experience it for yourself.

One thing to take note of is the Philippines is third world and a lot of singers like Katrina couldn’t afford vocal coaches until they turn pro, and by then have probably learned so much on their own that there’s little need for a coach anyway. Most of these artists are discovered in singing competitions because of their financial situations and the hope that they can help their families with their winnings. The pros likely are provided coaches when they are signed for record deals or the weekly musical tv shows that Filipinos are fond of but until then the moms, aunts, grannies or school music teacher are the coaches they will know and karaoke and competing in singing contests will be their training. The generation of singers that will come after the likes of Katrina and Morissete are lucky and would likely be a lot better because there are a lot of vocal coaches on KZbin for them to watch for free who react to the said artists.

Thanks Guys for appreciating Katrina's Talents and for all the Pilipino Artists as well. You were amazed by their talents and wondering how they attained that level and who were their Vocal Coaches. To tell you truthfully and frankly, 95% of Pilipino Singers have no Professional Vocal Training. They started singing at a very young age and kept on singing and entering in all singing competitions until they reach celebrity status. They just rely on their God Given Raw Talents and good sense of hearing. We have a saying here in the Philippines that goes "Singers are Born not Made". No matter how good the vocal coach may be if the student has no TALENT, it's only a waste of time and effort. That's the reason why Vocal Coaches in the Philippines will not thrive. One more thing tho, since the Philippines has so many Talented Singers (almost all Pilipinos know how to sing), the competition is so tight/stiff and to shine above others one must excel in some other ways. Music and Singing is part of Pilipino Culture and Foreigners proved it when they saw Pilipinos singing on Karaoke (we call it Videoke) in almost every nook and cranny of the Country. Almost all household have a Karaoke Machine. You can hear Music on Cars, Public Transportations, Trains, Bars, Restaurants, Shopping Malls, and even in Parks. It's no wonder because the only Patent Holder of the Karaoke (called Sing-Along back then) is a Pilipino, Roberto Del Rosario, in 1975.

I first listened to this reaction last week. But recently decided to do something I never do, which is comment, although not about this specific reaction. I Love all your reactions. Katrina is extremely talented and a real joy to listen to, so I really don't have much to say about this performance as it's as good as I would expect. You (the 'collective' you) are among my top five reactors. I came upon you as I followed reactions to Morissette, who simply infatuates me. And, we share the inclination to have a glass of wine while listening to music. I think we also share the importance of the emotive component in the performance of a song. However, as much as I appreciate Morissette, Katrina, and a host of other Filipino talents, I have a suggestion for another artist who I feel you will appreciate should you go ahead and do a reaction. I don't think you've reacted to this performer although it's entirely possible you know who she is and are familiar with her music, and if that disqualifies a reaction, I can understand. The artist is Lara Fabian and I recommend "Je Suis Malade" and/or "Broken Vow", both from a concert she gave in approx. yr/2000. Lara is the only artist I've ever listened to that has exceeded Morissette's ability to draw me into a song and feel the experience she's providing us. "Je Suis Malade", although not an original song, is an absolutely killer performance. "Broken Vow" is her song, and I believe this was a personal experience for her. She co-wrote the music and the lyrics are hers. You could also listen to "Adagio" (same concert) and be equally astounded. I'd really enjoy to your reactions, especially Katie's (it's fun to imagine the bleeped expression). IMO, if you have not heard Lara Fabian then you've missed out on a woman who is one of the (if not "the") greatest female vocalists of the century (at least, so far). The fact that she's not widely known in the U.S. is indicative of just how insular we are as a culture.
