I love this song, it's such an old classic now. I saw the original artist/band perform this when I was a kid. I wish they'd perform on the Wish Bus too but I think only the lead vocalist is the same now. I feel like this Wish performance came about this way: they were jamming out on a day-off, randomly did a cover of this song among many others, thought it was beautiful, and Michael said, "Hey why don't we perform this on the Wish Bus?" Because these artists don't really release a lot of songs, so it wouldn't have been for a specific promotional activity. They probably just genuinely thought it would be a great fit for the Wish Bus.

Michael has been known to have this habit of squinting and rolling his eyes up sometimes even closing them while he sings so I guess he wears the sunglasses to hide it. As for the guitar device, it's probably for the percussion effect. That way he doesn't have to shift his hand far to tap the guitar making it easier and more convenient to get back to strumming and plucking after tapping.
