Valery what a brave choice to pick a Dutch song...your European roots are showing. For me it is more about the lyrics....very surprising to sing about loving yourself for Dutchies. Tabitha did a great job. The song is a lesson for life: if you love (appreciate) yourself you can truely love an other person. Thank you for this. Stay healthy and happy.

You also have to take into account that it is not done within the dutch culture to say "I love myself so much" It "reeks" of self importance and pride. So when this song was sung by the original artist Harry Jekkers, you have to understand that he was known for the humoristic side of songs, it is only when you take a closer look that you see the deeper meaning. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f16Xk6RqqdqHnKM for an original performance and you can hear the audience laugh along. Thank you so much for that back story. That makes so much sense. I can see that Dutch culture is very modest. My Grandparents are from Sweden. Swedish culture is similar in that respect.

Harrie Jekkers is what the Dutch refer to as a 'cabaretier'. Best translated as a comedian, but a lot more than that. Typically they use music and jokes to tell a broader story and/or convey emotions. More often than not, Harrie Jekkers has very confronting songs, about death, pursuit of happyness, fears, dementia, family, himself, which aren't all that funny. His style in particular is a more of an absurdity (I love myself, only myself) becoming normal (only being able to truely love another, if you love yourself) or vice versa. The only non-Dutch with a similar style I have seen is Bo Burnham. It's a very particular type of art, referred to as kleinkunst, where some of the best songwriting is done. It's really hard to explain, but the quality of this song doesn't translate well. Harrie Jekkers is basically a clown that halfway through the song turns the tables and makes the listener the clown for laughing at some of the jokes that make sense now.

It is one of my favorite Harry Jekkers' songs, he's a singer but also a comedian/story teller. This song, in his version has a comical note to it, eventho the message is the same, "having to truly love oneself to be able to truly love another" Tabitha sings it in a more serious manner but with these lyrics, it works equally well both ways, i really liked her version too :) Thnx for the upload Valerie :D

last season floor jansen was asked what she prefers , a big crowd of thousends of people or that initimate with only 8. she also found it harder to sing with with that intimate group. plese check milow (the bold guy) , doing "redemption song" (episode of tabitha) or check him when doing "giving up on you" (episode of miss montreal)

If you listen to the Dutch language, you can hear, there are a lot of different words from other languages in it. The Dutch language has many English words, and also a few German and French words too. English words in the Dutch language are for example: 'Manager,( awkward, strange : speak language), 'connect', management, 'pilot', and many more. The most people in the Netherlands can speak English as well. That's also a reason, why you can hear a lot of English songs in 'Beste Zangers'. Many singers can sing Dutch and English songs too. That's also a reason why the reactions here are in English from the Dutch people too, because they understand that many people can't understand the Dutch language, and they can most of the time switch to the English language too, or they will try it.

Thank you for this. I started teaching myself Dutch earlier in the year using Duolingo. I've studied both German and French (as well as other languages like Swedish) and I was fascinated how Dutch incorporates English, German and French. Even though I haven't kept up my studies in Dutch, I am catching more meaning and recognizing words that I know.

The most English single words may also be used quite normally in writing.

I agree with you that this season has more singer/songwriter artists, whereas the previous season(s) had more diversity (metal, opera, latin, folk, etc.) Personally, I prefer the previous season, but that is probably because I'm a big Floor fan.

Their own repertoire is in Dutch, but occasionally they cover English songs. Like in the series "Homeward Bound", which is the making of a documentary dedicated to Simon and Garfunkel. For me I prefer the original by Harry Jekkers.
