This was a fabulous workshop not just for the FS5 but for understanding today's video technology. I'm a filmmaker, a director, cameraman and am lacking tech knowledge. Usually I have a tech with me, but I'm about to begin a film shooting most as a one man band. I now know a whole lot more, including what questions to ask my techie colleagues. Thank you!

I'm so glad I watched this presentation. Just an incredible amount of information shared about the FS5 and modern shooting in general. Had I not seen this I probably would've ended up with an FS5 trying to grade 4K and wanting to throw my monitor. :) I was leaning toward the FS7 before Sony dropped this little bomb, and now I'm leaning that way again. Very very nice presentation! Not only on the FS5, also on Slog2 Slog3 and the whole dynamic range science! What I´d like to add: Premiere 2015´s new lumetri color panel is said to be 32 bit floating point. So I guess the need to go the detour around Davinci Resolve isn´t necessary anymore. I can´t really tell if there is a difference between grading within Premiere 2014 and 2015 cause I started using V-Log L on my GH4 last month, when Premiere 2015 was already out and since the internal 8 Bit recording of V-Log L isn´t very healthy on the color spectrum, I can´t realy tell :-)

I've received notification from Adobe that they use 32 bit float maths for grading within Premier. I apologize for getting this wrong and suggesting that they only use 16 bit. However I stand by the opinion that I cannot get as good results when using Premiere/Lumetri to grade compared to DaVinci Resolve even when using very similar tools like the luma curve.

Fantastic presentation, and I learnt a lot more than just about the FS5. Thank you! The one thing that niggles me is that it appears that to use cine gammas correctly requires an eye judgement of the display to reduce exposure and that Sony has nothing below 70% zebras. What about mixed scenes where we can't use a face to jude exposure, such as the night shot in Alister's video? Or ENG type footage where we are grabbing shots on-the-hop and don't have time for nuanced exposure tweaking? Is there a way that we can set auto exposure on the FS5 to under-expose cine gammas by one stop?
@brettrogers18789 жыл бұрын
hi Alister. My FS5 arrives next week. Question. If I used a Sony Vario-Tessar 16-35mm e mount lens, would that give me full auto capabilities? ie. auto focus, face detection, etc... I have a metabones aps-c to ef adaptor but do for see the need for full auto mode. Thanks.

My FS5 has a slight play to its smart grip when it's attached to the camera. Have you noticed this? It rotates a little when you pivot the camera and it does so with a metallic sound that might be captured by the mic. Sony supports hasn't replied to me about this yet.

Wonderfully informative! Can I shoot 10-bit 4:2:2 HD to an Atomos Ninja Star via HDMI? Or is uncompressed HD external recording only possible through the SDI output. I want to shoot football matches externally and record slow motion goals to the SD card. Actually, is it possible to shoot internally onto one SD card and burst slow motion into the other? Thanks!

Thanks for this video. Very good explanation of cinegammas etc. In contrast many KZbinrs have not much idea about slogs and cinegammy but still try to educate. Anyway how about very important question which I believe was not answered?: " why even bother to use something other than 709 if we all see 6-7 stop world.." And. For 8bit camera is it ok to mix standard picture profile with let's say cinema or pro colour profiles? Reason? To Maximise colour information and contrast with less stops but still grade.

Thanks a bunch Alister for the video. One thing I can't figure out is how to change the shutter speed to 1 sec., I set the S&Q to 1fps, at XAVC 1080/24p 50bit, but the shutter will only go down to 6 or 4 and not below? Has this changed because I did the update?

Loved it. Thought there was a bit too much information about s-log2 vs s-log3 for the purpose of the video. Don't get me wrong - the information is great but I would have preferred a walk-through of how to best set up the camera for correct exposure - meaning a complete overview of how to use the camera's exposure tools.

I'm an a7s and a7s II shooter, but this presentation was absolutely invaluable. Sony should included a usb stick of it with every camera purchase, since clearly they have no desire to provide it in the form of extensive documentation. I would like to know what technical hurdle prevents Sony from provide a 10 bit color space, at the very least as an output to external recorder. With a price point so much higher than competitors, it doesn't seem too much to ask.

I am confused. If cine gammas are a half-way point between a standard gamma and s-log, with similar but less extreme curves, then why would it be best to expose (faces) darker than usual when using cine gammas, but brighter than usual when using s-log?

At some point in the video Alister said that you can record super slow-motion internally in the sd card and record at a regular speed (24 ,25 or 30fsp etc) externally at the same time. I tested that today with the Sound Devices PIX 240 in 1080p. The problem I had was when the camera is buffering the super slow-motion (240fps) the pix 240 is recording the buffering image (the image you see in the lcd when the camera is recording/buffering the super slow-motion) instead of the normal speed (23.98) . The strange things is that the recorder record normally before and after the camera is buffering the slow motion... I turn off the rec trigger for this test. I tried the SDI and the HDMI output, but it give me the same result. Is there something I am doing wrong of you can't record S slowmo and regular speed at the same time.
@alisterchapman8 жыл бұрын
No you are not doing anything wrong, this is a limitation, the buffering will interrupt the real time stream. But it does allow you to capture the action in real time on an external recorder up to the point where you decided to grab a slow mo clip. Without the external recorder the camera is either: slow mo in bursts or normal speed. If you want both then you can do this by adding the external recorder with the exception of the buffer period.
@martinnoel32898 жыл бұрын
To Bad. it would have been useful to have the slow mo in a different media for a sport event and the full uninterrupted game in an other. Loosing 20 sec or so for buffering at probably at an importent time of game is not very useful. Thanks!

"you can only shoot slog at 3200" "with slog you should always overexpose as much as possible without clipping" Only one of the sentence can be true. Overexposing at 3200 means shooting (if you happen to have a light meter) at a lower ISO
