What a great way to farewell Jonathan! The Cornelius can come across as a tired old pot-boiler, but this is pure class. Lovely phrasing, understated and humble.

Angelic!🙏 and as a native german I'm always impressed by the very accurate pronounciation! E.g. the common word "Gold" which is pronounced so differently in the two language (the "L" sound) yet Jonathan manages it effortlessly!

What a gem! There's something so special about this piece, it makes my skin tingly when I hear it done well, and this made my skin tingle! It's so nice to hear Jonathan's voice as a soloist, he did a great job! And that last note was _so_ _beautiful!_ Nicely done!

In Germany (at least in the south of Germany), around the January 6th, groups of children disguised as the three kings that have visited baby jesus in his manger, are walking from house to house knocking at each door (or rather ringing the doorbell nowadays) to visit the families. They explain that they did come to collect some money for beneficial purposes (no worries, it is organized officially by the catholic church) and also in most cases sing one or two songs, mostly only the melody. We call these groups of children "Sternsinger" ("star singers"). When i was 18 years old, I joined such a group of "Sternsinger", who just did not stop perfoming this rite year after year, and everybody has become a young adult meanwhile. We were 5, the three kings and two servants and therefore could sing songs for 4-5 voices. "Drei Könige" by Corneilus was one of the ~30 songs we had in our repertoire, so I still know (20+ years later) the whole lyrics and each note of the tenor voice by heart. This video is a great reminder to these days. Thank's for that.

You guys manage to make even Cornelius' kitsch to something noble and beautiful. Jonathan is singing so beautifully! I will miss him as a member of the group. I will never get fed up listening to Voces8!
@thomassavary5764 Жыл бұрын
The line between kitsch and beauty is sometimes very thin. What makes not to fall into kitsch? Perhaps sincerity and confidence. This piece is one of the few works that I too could have found kitsch, but which disarm me by what I perceive as their sincerity and their lack of fear of being labeled as kitsch. Other example : “The Lord Bless You and Keep You” by John Rutter, a composer of whom I hate everything I’ve ever heard, except for this piece and two other works : “Hymn to the Creator of Light” and “Dormi Jesu”, that I absolutely love.

Almost certainly (& sounds like) the Ivor Atkins arr. familiar from Carols for Choirs I. It featured in this year's Carols from King's on BBC2 on Christmas Eve; NB that programme is not to be confused with the Festival of 9L&C broadcast live on the wireless, of which it is a sort of TV mash-down.
