Thank you for your wondrous musical contemplation of the woman who anointed Jesus with her tears. One hears something of the prayer that must have been on her heart. Fletcher's text, Gibbon's music, VOCES8's stunning rendition--a perfect meditation of Luke 7:37-38.

The advanced harmonic language of Gibbons is here presented to perfection by an ensemble whose members listen to each other. Breath control is perfect, indicating hours of preparation.

You good people are getting me through this pandemic. I hope at some point restrictions in the UK are lifted to the point where the 8 of you could safely gather in a venue somewhere, spaced 2m apart -- I would pay good money to hear a good livestream from you and I'm sure thousands of fans worldwide feel the same way.

This VOCES8 appreciator certainly does! I don’t like the term ‘fan’ as it’s short for ‘fanatic’ and don’t connect VOCES8 with any sort of fanatic.

Drop, drop, slow tears, and bathe those beauteous feet, which brought from heaven the news and Prince of Peace. Cease not, wet eyes, his mercies to entreat; to cry for vengeance, sin doth never cease. In your deep floods, drown all my faults and fears; nor let his eye see sin, but through my tears.

This is singing at its best. The balance is perfect, the entrances and cutoffs are perfect. In all my years of singing, listening, perfecting, and everything you try to do to make a perfect performance, I call this one perfect. Can I say it one more time? PERFECT
@garywait3231 Жыл бұрын
You can say it as often as you wish, and it will get a hearty AMEN from me. With more than a half-century of choral singing and conducting church music, often this very moving anthem, especially at Communion and always at either Ash Wednesday or Maundy Thursday, and always striving devotedly for that spiritual magic that this piece so perfectly embodies, I readily agree that of all I have sung or heard this truly is perfection.

Why no mention of the composer - the sublime Orlando Gibbons, buried in Canterbury Cathedral as he was on his way to the Kent coast when he died, to meet Henrietta Maria, the French princess betrothed to Charles I.

I have tried to find a perfect rendering of this beautiful Hymn tune. The text is written by Phineas Fletcher (1582-1650) and is usually sung to that of Song 46 written by Orlando Gibbons circa 1623. I has taken me 50 + years to track down this piece. The reason is that I usually try to familiarize myself with the Chorale or Hymn tune. As an organist I have to have the tune set in stone in my head so that I know the direction of the composer when they are writing a Chorale Prelude or piece, because I do want the tune to stand out slightly. I have a piece written by Vincent Persichetti "Chorale Prelude on Drop, Drop, Slow Tears" for organ - Opus 104 (January 15, 1968) and I love the piece but it is a bit "modern" and slightly "atonal" and it is hard to create a sense of "through composition" for the listener. I do not like to confront or "scare" the bejezus out of my audience and this piece has the opportunity to do just that. Finding the structure of the original hymn and playing it from that perspective will cohesively marry all of the disparate sections offered in the composition and create a whole experience for the listener. Thank you!

Drop, drop, drop...slow tears and bathe those beauteous feet, which brought from Heav'n the news and Prince of Peace. Cease not, wet tears, His mercy to entreat; to cry for vengeance: sin doth never cease. Drop, drop, drop...slow tears in your deep flood, drown all my faults and fears; nor let His eye see sin, but through my tears.

Who gave 4 thumbs down? The ONLY possibility is they didn't like the Gibbons. I love it personally ❤️. It is amazingly tricky to sing it this well, subtle nuance and just lovely. I'm not sure I've heard it sung better, except when I am singing it, 1st CT. LOL

As always, lovely. But why do all of you dress like you are attending a corporate board meeting? With the relaxation of “concert attire” through the world, you really don’t need to put on silk dresses, heels and coat and tie to make such heavenly music.

There are plenty of videos of them in casual attire. Maybe they dressed up out of respect for the text.
