Voces8 are and have been untouchable for years. It is good to have different versions of compositions presented to us for our consumption but occasionally there is no bettering of the original. This is one of those times. Compare this version to Voces8’s previously perfect recording of this. Musically this is superb but as with films, sequels are rarely as good.

I remember being so moved by Rutter's For the Beauty of the Earth when I was in middle school. The all county choir did it with piano and oboe (I was in the orchestra). I don't see that arrangement around much. Both that and this are great examples of how the oboe so easily touches something deep, perhaps a painful glimpse of a perfect world. I suppose Morricone's "The Mission" soundtrack speaks to that, too, lots of oboe there too!

What an amazing chorale-prelude! I wonder if it would work as an organ work, althoug there is so much texture in this setting that I fear not. This is gorgeous. This owes much to the ground explored by Bach.

Yes! There is so much Bach in this. I love the oboe with human voice. It gives it all such a humble and sentimentalistic note. Like it is reflecting all emotions on the go as they are felt, giving them both more distance and more pain, like being a wise observer who feels everything in the world more intensely through reminiscence of things past and the memento mori of the future. So much Bach.

there is an English version of the song from 1894, but I think it can not cover the beauty of the original German words - that is if you understand both languages. So why not let be in this very beautiful original version like they chose here, I really loved it, particularly because Voces8 sing it with rather perfect German pronunciation- they always do when they sing in German which has me in awe every single time, as most choirs that are not native Germans simply can't do it
