@@YBPlaysMusic I'm coming here late, as usual, but a couple of things. Kate Lott was the first soloist she is a true Soprano. Also, she is the one you'll hear soaring over everyone else in the harmonies. She to me is worth the price of admission. Many times her notes, especially the ones at the end of a big crescendo, get lost except when the voices stop you can hear the echo of her notes. So listen to the ends of all the runs and such and pay special attention to her notes. Sometimes they are so soft and yet will ring the longest. They call that having a 'numinous' experience. Look it up it up it is a great word. I found it in high school while trying to describe something I saw in nature that was beyond my ability to describe it. P.S. The Bass singer is the one in the long-sleeved maroon shirt on the right. Don't know his name but he is as good on his end as Kate is at hers.

The journey down Voctave’s rabbit hole is simply wonderful. Their arrangements and especially the dynamics are incomparable. A few MUSTS are: The Prince of Egypt Medley You Will Be Found The Impossible Dream Someone Like You Being Alive And any of their Disney compilations. Your ears and heart will thank you. They never disappoint.

Love your reaction. There is normally 11 members of Voctave.All of them at one time or another have sung with the Voices of Liberty at Epcot, Disney World Florida. One song you should listen to is when they do the Great Movie Medley. They are all movie theme songs composed by the great John Williams and their voices ARE the orchestra. There is only one song that has any lyrics to it. Jamey Ray,who started Voctave,is a genius composer and has composed for Voiceplay and Pentatonix. A fun one that feature some of the guys,is Disney Showstoppers Medley. This is an amazing rabbit hole to go down.

Many refer to the 'big three' as Pentatonix, Home Free, and Voice Play. I Think of it more like the 'Big Four,' which includes Voctave. As much as I love ALL of them, I think Voctave's depth of sound in their harmonies (11 versus 5) is the most captivating to my ears. I've been a Pentaholic for about 7 years. I discovered Voice Play and Home Free more recently. Then I learned of Voctave. You called it... I get eargasms from all 4 groups, but the most (per song) from Voctave. I'm really glad you tried them! You mentioned EJ Cordona. To see him featured, check out "O Come, All Ye Faithful." Truly a magnificent piece. Just search Voctave, and pick something that looks good to you. Lots of holiday, Disney, and other categories from this versatile group! Plus, I'm sure you'll get lots of suggestions! Great job with this one!

I would say it's closer to a Big Six because you also have Rockapella, building upon rock and doo wop before moving to a more R&B sound, who were trailblazers for moving acapella towards what we have today (and btw they are still performing today, with 25 albums). The other group is Take Six, the most awarded acapella group in history. They fused jazz and gospel. I would also have to add two other long-time groups that still continue today: The King's Singers, masters of acapella in a classical style; their arrangements are staples for choral music, and the Swingle Singers/Swingles - they started out doing arrangement of Bach pieces but have moved to all genres. Both the Swingles and King's Singers have been performing for over 50 years.

@@jamesrawlins735 Wow! You knowTake 6?? I was fortunate enough to see them live at a Jazz fest years ago (early 90s). I have their debut album (or had it) in vinyl. I honestly don't think they had the following that these groups have, but they were fantastic when I knew of them in the early 90s. I didn't know they were still active! Great point!!
@jamesrawlins735 Жыл бұрын
@@AudioVile When I was in college I was in a small vocal jazz ensemble and one of the numbers we worked on was Take 6's You're the Biggest Part of Me (which is a cover of an Ambrosia song from the 80s). The parts were really challenging, and it was probably a little out of our skill level, but we had fun and the audiences seemed to love it. (The hardest song we tried to do was Manhattan Transfer's Four Brothers - we worked on it for weeks but we finally gave up.) You are probably right in that T6 was never as popular as Pentatonix or even Rockapella (who blew up because of the Do It Acapella documentary directed by Spike Lee and their singing Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego), but no acapella group was more respected in the music industry.

@AudioVile10 ай бұрын
@@mburns75 I've listened to them! They are really good. I don't think they ever really had the popularity of the "current big four," but that's largely due to the media evolution and their style. They definitely have serious game!!

In late 2015, when Voctave recorded the "Disney Love Medley", there were only 8 members in the ensemble (i.e. 2 sopranos, 1 soprano/alto, 1 alto, 2 tenors, 1 tenor/baritone and 1 bass). In May of 2017, when Voctave released the "Disney Princess Medley", there were 11 members in the ensemble. They added 1 alto, 1 baritone/bass and 1 bass. One of the tenors, Jamey Ray, is the composer/arranger for Voctave. He arranges with each individual member's vocal abilities in mind. He does include numerous 11 part harmonies, thus the wall of sound one hears.

Excellent reaction! A major part of the magic of Voctave are their incredible arrangements that take full advantage of the strengths of each voice and the power of the ensemble. As previously mentioned, Jamey Ray (who is also an outstanding Tenor voice in the group - 2nd from the left in this recording) does Voctave's arrangements and those arrangements are stunning - every one of them.

The members have changed a little over the COVID situation, one of the bases and the “leader” Tony DeRosa have left, but Drew Ochoa has replaced him. They are amazing! To me Vocative and VoicePlay are just a tier above all other groups. VoicePlay is king of epic covers of pop music. Vocative is very old-school, classical/orchestral in feeling. They sound like the soundtrack choirs from the older (pre-70s) films. Vocative nails Disney every time!!!!

I rarely comment on videos, and I am in no position to offer advice. I am a musician, music educator, and choir director. I stumbled across your reactions as a fan of Voctave. I like your insight and knowledge. But, as a listener/watcher, I would appreciate it if you paused and talked or added captions and discussed them at the end with clips rather than talking over the performance or making noises. For Ashley’s Mulan, you were trying to place the movie and missed how her voice has so much clarity and of course Kate’s stratospheric notes. I teach listening skills constantly with my students and therefore it’s a pet peeve of mine when someone is talking or focused elsewhere when enjoying a performance. But… as I said, you do you. I am just offering my unsolicited opinion 🤦🏻♂️ as a music teacher. Keep up the musical journey.
