I know this is an old comment thread but I had a relative who went to a private school and they had a special program to allow indigenous Australians to basically learn there for virtually no cost. My relative told me the indigenous student was an incredibly self-absorbed person and in the end they didn't do much with their private schooling...didn't even go to university and dropped out of a TAFE course. You can only give so many opportunities to these people, but unfortunately a lot of Indigenous people don't do much with those opportunities and in the end, they don't have to. Why pull yourself up by the bootstraps when you can lavish yourself as a perpetual victim class?

They didn't have traditional costumes. Old paintings and photographs show them naked. Red nappies were introduced by the white fella.They have recently started wearing kangaroo skin or possum fur clothing and copied Polynesian style costumes such as grass or shell skirts. The movements of the Maori Haka are being adopted by their football teams. Traditions are modified and modernised

Sir Douglas Nicholls (1906 - 1988) was Australia's first, and only, Aboriginal State Govenor (South Australia). He was almost if not full blooded Aborigine. An excellent VFA player for Nothcote and VFL for Fitzroy. He was also an ordained minister in the Church.of Christ. He receive TWO knighthoods being the first Aborigine knighted. He loved life and loved people for who they were. All of this he did out of his own efforts in an Australia that did not recognise Aborigines as Australian citizens until 1967 for which he was an adament campaigner. He came to our class in 1973 to talk to us, as we were doing Australian histoy and I have never forgotten that afrternoon. He talked to us with such joy, love and enthusiasm. He, like may Aborigines, over the years have imroved thier lives and that of other Aborigines. If some can do it, just like whites in poor communities, then why can't more? What more of a voice can you have than shear guts and determination. Good on you Sir Douglas Nicholls.

It could have been a superpower, but it is B-version of the pathetic UK. Australians were a small European tribe on the furthest side of the world. I used to think that Pauline's idea that a period or mandatory military service for all school leavers was foolish, but now I know better. You only have to look at the drug and alcohol problems everywhere with the young. Discipline is good for anyone. You don't realize how much when you are young.

'The Voice' will inevitably open the dam walls on a plethora of Native Title claims which will result in every property owner in Australia having to pay rent. It will be a rent tax. It means every Australian home owner and landlord will pay an extra tax (rent tax). They say we are on stolen land and therefore you are 'renters' a sign of goodwill to pay extra tax. It will depend on the value of your home. If you have say a 1.5 million house in Sydney you will probably pay 1 to 2% rent tax meaning 10 to 20k per year. Landlords will simply increase rent for tenants to cover the cost. Where will this money go? It will feed a bureaucracy. New developments will also pay extra fees to develop on 'stolen land’.
