The story of the first Thanksgiving is as we all expect not as we learned. However the story here has left out a few important and interesting things. The when the ship arrived horribly off course it was the end of fall. They found an abandoned native village (they had been geocided by another tribe) and moved some of the people off the ship to the walled village. The ship stayed as a floating hospital. They were short on food and terrified of being killed off by the hostile natives. As people died over the winter they would take the body and tie them to trees on the wall and give them muskets so they would look like armed sentries. Samoset was a native man that had learned English by interacting with the Virginia Colony. He walk up one day and said hello much to I'd image the shock of the separatists. The local Wampanoag tribe had been badly weakened by plague and was at risk from attack from other hostile tribes. So they made a mutual defense pack and agreed to have another native man help them. That was Squanto who was actually a former slave captured by some jackass named Thomas Hunt who had took him to England where he learned English. While not justifying the slave taking, Squanto would have died in his village from the plague if he hadn't been made into a slave. After a terrible winter and a productive but hard spring and summer, they did have a feast to celebrate the defense pack they had made which was the first Thanksgiving. A year after landing. Also fun fact their were a whole bunch of non separatists on the ship that wanted nothing to do with the Christian Extremists but kinda got stuck along the way with them. The new colony also had extremely strong protections for freedom and liberty which was unheard of in Europe at the time, built into the founding charter of the settlement.

Europe's history is jampacked with unimaginative names for cities, which to be fair, wasn't exclusively a European thing*. Vikings' name for Constantinople, the biggest city they'd ever see? Miklagard (the great city). Capital of the Rus principality of Novgorod, the new Rus power after Kyiv's fall to Mongols? Novgorod (new city). Name of the Carthaginians' new provincial capital in the Iberian peninsula? Qart-ḥadašt (new city), later renamed Carthago Nova by the Romans (new Qart-ḥadašt, or new new city). *Africa: the name of the new Phoenician colony in North-Africa? Qart-ḥadašt (you know) Asia: the name of Japan's traditional capital? Kyoto (the capital). The name of Japan's new capital located east of Kyoto? Tokyo (eastern capital).

As a native of Massachusetts, we were taught that Plymouth Rock was a sort of Psuedo monument that the Separatists carved with the year of the Landing. To say "This was when we got here."
