Something that always bugged me about S&G's version that always bugged me was that it sounds oddly happy? It's something you could bob your head to or something you'd fall asleep to. Disturbed's version feels more like a gut punch. Originally a warning, and now anger that it was ignored.

I think maybe something some people don't get is that not all singing is meant to be "pretty" and "likable", and that not all beauty is "nice" and "correct". Or even further, that not all anger is bad or wrong either. This cover is really an excellent showcase of one way of "what angry growling is for", because it shows us an emotional story that wouldn't be complete without anger: It begins in loss and grief at the dearth of communication and connection, which is shown in the abandoned and destroyed instruments and desolate landscapes, and perfectly mirrored in the tender, grieving clean vocals. Humankind is shown as disconnected and lost. The singer(and the band) then attempts to get people to listen to eachother, and to hear the message. But when the message falls to deaf ears, instead of falling back to despair, quietness and acquiescence, they dig into their fury. They won't accept and give up humanity to the worship of money and consumption (the neon god), but *demands* to be heard, *demands* to break through. In essence, the message to me is that culture, music and humanity have to shake themselves free, even by anger, to find themselves, find eachother, to live for eachother and not for neon lights. And David takes us through from those emotions of sorrow and loss, through the build up of hope and confidence, up to a crescendo of anger - and finally back to the calm of a new possibility as the musicians arrive with their songs. And in this context the distorted singing is an absolutely incredible way to convey that emotion. I'd say this is an excellent "gateway" for people who "don't get why people would listen to such ugly things". This is why.

QUOTE TAKEN FROM REDDIT: "In April 2016, Paul Simon endorsed the cover. Additionally, on April 1, Simon sent Draiman an email praising Disturbed's performance of the rendition on American talk show Conan. Simon wrote, "Really powerful performance on Conan the other day. First time I'd seen you do it live. Nice. Thanks." Draiman responded, "Mr. Simon, I am honored beyond words. We only hoped to pay homage and honor to the brilliance of one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Your compliment means the world to me/us and we are eternally grateful."

The first time I heard it, it made me feel the same effect. It was the only song I listened to for many days. I barely remember listening to the original song as a toddler, and despite I didn't even know English-speaking, it became one of my favourite songs of all time for many years until I almost forgot it without even understanding the meaning of the lyrics. But, when I heard the Disturbed version, it disturbed my memories and knowing English at the time, I could understand the lyrics and feel what that amazing voice and the softness, the determination, the stoicism and the anger wanted to tell all of us. And that's how the same, and at the same time, a totally different song became one of my favourite songs of all time, for the second time in my life

She is describing why his voice sounds that way. The Simon and Garfunkel version sounds like they are telling a story about events in the world of the song. The Disturbed version sounds like he is living in that world as those events are happening.

Raised as a Cantor, Davie naturally looks at a song as all consonants 😉 Joking aside, every single vocal approach, from the rounded beauty of bel canto to the brutality of Metal screaming, has a function in the expressive pallet of singing. This is why modern singers like Draiman and Floor Jansen are so interesting: because they understand that the brutal sounds developed in Metal singing can be tools to juxtapose rage (or scorn) with beauty and sensitivity. And they have the technique to do it safely, and the musicality to use it where belongs in a song.

As a loyal and diehard Disturbed fan for over two decades, seeing her slowly growing more and more excited as David was transitioning his voice into his traditional "Oooo-wah-a-a-a!!" towards the end of the song was the most adorable thing I've ever seen.

David actually has a deep passion for"The Sound of Silence", & it comes out in his voice. He's actually wanted to cover it, for years, but was so obsessed with doing it perfect, that he didn't want to do it until he was convinced that he could do it the proper justice. Way to go! It was a home run!
@thelokiway44784 жыл бұрын
He said that he decided "Let me put that out of my head" when it was first suggested. That was until their producer, Kevin Churko, came up with that piano that starts off the song that David, after recording for the day, decided to go back into the booth to see what they could do... Long story short, after three hours in the booth for that song, the longest in his career, they found the best take and here it is...

@@spiderprint there are few singers/bands that don't use pitch correction. It's because it's nearly impossible to have every instrument in perfect tune. Music isn't a game so no he isn't "cheating"

I absolutely love David's version of this song. To me it is sung as it is meant to be, full of darkness, full of anguish, regret and warning. Listening to Simon and Garfunkel after... just sounds so inconsequential. I cried the first time I heard this version, real, heavy tears at all the terrible disconnection we've experienced between us. All of us. He's asking us to let go of the 'neon gods' that cause so much pain and listen to what is truly said. I was so moved and so it seems was Paul Simon when he heard this version. Thank you Elizabeth.
