I think that one of the things that sets them apart is their absolute mastery of dynamics. They can go from wall of sound to a perfect unison stop-and-rest-silence, and they even vary the level of attack on each note according to what they are using it for.

I’ve been a fan of Pentatonix since 2013; since Avi Kaplan -the original bass singer-was in the group.. and I always thought that Kevin and Scott both had a Baritone voice. Mitch is a Tenor. Matt can have a Baritone and Bass voice (I remember I was in choir with a guy who was both a Baritone and Bass). And Kirstin is a Mezzo-Soprano.

@@m.nicole7996 Kevin is absolutely a tenor. His range is smaller than the rest, but he can go higher than Mitch. Check out his solo performance of "Down" and you'll see there is no way he's covering a bassline.

While not a bass, Kevin is massively talented at singing as well as percussion, cello, saxophone, and composition. Having Kevin sing throuout this entire song is like the hockey team pulling the goalie to put all five skaters on the attack. It changes the dynamic completely.

Avi was a basso profundo, ( with a contra bass F# 4th ledger-line bass clef) Matt is a lyric bass. Scott sings bass when Avi/Matt solo. Kevin is a tenor with perfect pitch, so he can sing the chordal extensions with ease. During Matt’s solo Kevin is in the high harmony!

I adored your reaction at the end of the song. That groan-sigh that says it all without words. They are spectacular, aren't they? The genius of their production and process and performance is absolutely stellar. That are chameleons of music, too, with the changes in color and range and volume (not the loudness, but fullness) and resonance and and and that each one of them is capable of doing and continues to explore. It is lovely. Lovely. Lovely. And oh-so-timely, too. Yes. Here's to a mad world finding its way back to saner times soon. Stay well, all.

Scott is the bass under Matt's lead line. Scott carries the bass line in their version of Halleluha when Avi is singing the lead line. Kevin is singing the high line. When Kevin isn't beatboxing they go from 4 part harmony to a 5 part harmony.

That was a most refreshing analysis! As a professional singer/actor of over fifty years experience, my instinct is to deconstruct performances, as you have here. Their choices of voice production are key to how they build the emotional performance and their conscious clear diction helps immensely too. They stagger breaths to maintain movement, but breathe as one when needing to. No ragged consonants help to maintain their cohesiveness too. This is a master-class!

In live performances, Scott does often covers bass notes while Matt (or Avi in older performances) sings lead. Sometimes he can nail the low notes; sometimes the notes are lost; and sometimes he goes up an octave. Probably depends on how he's feeling on any given day. In their official videos, you're often hearing layered low notes from Matt/Avi during their leads.
@doriawayne2746
@doriawayne2746 3 жыл бұрын
First half was true, but the latter part was not. They do use layers but they don't layer the bass line, you can hear the differences of low notes between Scott and Avi/Matt in most of songs.
@pjschmid2251
@pjschmid2251 3 жыл бұрын
@@doriawayne2746 yes and I’m pretty sure when they arrange their songs they arrange the bass part knowing that Scott is going to have to cover that base line during performances. Also as would be expected as Scott gets older his lower range is getting stronger.
@mecfstraveler
@mecfstraveler 3 жыл бұрын
@@doriawayne2746 Yes. You're absolutely right! Scott has strengthened the lower end of his range since Matt came onto the scene and he has become even more versatile than he already was by being able to cover the bass line with confidence and I've even heard Scott do a few slides. But they do not layer the same voice when it comes to the bass line. Kevin is always in the higher-end of his range when they're doing multiple voice harmonies and they often pair him with Kirstie. Kevin actually has the highest note of the males in the group, even higher than Mitch (which was hard for me to accept because I'm a Mitch fan) but Scott, Mitch and Kirstin have said over and over again that Kevin has the highest note. I am really impressed with how solid Scott's bass has become! It frees Matt up to sing in the higher part of his range and it's beautiful!

Pentatonix is shedding light on the "Mad World" we're living in by sharing a heartfelt cover of Tears of Fears' 1983 hit. I love your reactions and analysis, Christie! PTX's cover of "Sound of Silence" would give you a great insight both into Scott's amazing lower register as well as Matt's seemingly endless power. He can't get as low as Avi, but he brings other aspects to the group. In his higher register his voice blends surprisingly well with Scott's. Another song that fits these difficult times perfectly is Angelina Jordan's first release from Republic Records, produced by Stargate, "Million Miles". It's an homage to her grandfather, but meant for all who have lost a loved one. Several serious reactors have lost it during the song. Be sure to react to the interesting official lyric video which includes art by her grandmother (probably helped by Angelina herself). Here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJmug5trj9mojc0 I live to say that Angelina is an artist who paints emotion with her voice.

Nice Analysis! Totally agree with you. The funny thing in this is that, if you listen to the Tears for Fears original after listening to this cover, you immediately realize that this PTX one is closer to the feeling that the song is supposed to transmit... (in my honest opinion). OK, different periods in time, different music-styles and fashions at each time, but this one is closer to the emotion-side of the story. Obviously the pandemic situation helps PTX now, but world was already Mad when Tears for Fears released it!. Their "Thank You" song is also tasteful and emotional in this Pandemic situation... hope you'll react to it ;D BTW, Kevin singing register is quite high (most of the time with Kirstin in the background)... Scott is the one covering Matt when leading (as it happens in Hallelujah when Avi leading). Scott range is impressive! See you in the next one

Jules recorded it for the film “Donnie Darko”, and it became a worldwide smash hit. It reached #1 in many countries, including the US. I give Tears for Fears full credit for the brilliant lyrics. However, perhaps they did not fully understand what they had. Their 1982 version was fast and poppy. The slow, haunting arrangement did not come until 2001, when Gary Jules and Michael Andrews rearranged it for the movie _Donnie Darko._ I've never seen anyone cover the Tears for Fears arrangement since. You didn't comment on the ghost-shadow imagery used in the video. I believe that was another callback to _Donnie Darko,_ with its themes of alternate reality and intentional "offness."

It was probably Scott, and not Kevin, who was singing the bass line when Matt was singing the melody. As a marvalous baryton, Scott has an amazing range. You can listen their version of The Sound of Silence, for another example of Scott singing as bass : kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZW5m4mqpddoa68

To answer your question about what to react to, I think you should try to sing to the karioke version kzbin.info/www/bejne/roHYc4ejrZJoaqc before you react to the Hailey Reinhart version of creep. I think it would be a fascinating challenge. Include both of them in one video so we can see what happened

I'm surprised you didn't remark on Mitch singing in his lower register and still singing so beautifully. We are all used to hearing him way up in his upper tenor ranges. Hearing him in his lower range is unusual and still so beautiful. I can only imagine how much more haunting this song would have been with Avi's bass in a section of solo somewhere in the mix. Yes, they did a beautiful job with this song, but I am allowed to miss Avi. I still love this group, but it just seems like a different group to me without the resounding bass pushing up from underneath the music. The "new" bass has a good sound, but it does not present itself like Avi's did.

Please react to the very recent release of Amazing Grace kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZPTXmx4er-YZ8U by Pentatonix. You won’t regret it! NOT FOR REATION, BUT, FYI --- Here’s the musical start of the Big 3 that came out of the NBC TV Acapella Group Competition Show - The Sing-Off - which run 4 years from 2009 to 2014. I believe VoicePlay would have finished much higher, had they not had their female singer, or had for example Rachel Potter then kzbin.info/www/bejne/ap-wZn2Qa6l_lbc Season 3 Winner - Pentatonix - kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4S3lZV9p8t2gqM Season 4 Winner - Home Free Sing Off all performances - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXnHZIeqdpKmq9E Season 4 (early elimination) - VoicePlay - 1) kzbin.info/www/bejne/eV7YoZ99hNGVnKc 2) kzbin.info/www/bejne/an-mhn6qa6qMic0 3) kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJDGpIJnpqhpq6c 4) kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKepaIFol8RpsJo Also) kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXbEkqiAerGpqrc and) kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKfLdIKfgrilf5I

I wish they'd gone with the original version. This is closer to the Gary Jules cover. 😕

They actually said this is a cover of Gary Jules recording. Like it or not, the Jules cover was a much bigger hit. It reached #1 in many countries, including the US. The Tears for Fears original reached #8 in the UK. I suspect they chose this version because Jules’s recording is better known to most people.

@@drieuxkoeppel8152 I was a teenager when the original was a hit, and I'm British, so it has more meaning to me. I also think the faster tempo could have made a more interesting version. It would also have challenged them. I don't actually dislike this or Pentatonix.
