Hey Julia. Theres a very popular band in the metal scene these days that have only really rose to fame recently. The band is very love/hate on account of the singers vocal style. It's unlike any band i've ever heard, and i think also his vocal technique is not sustainable and going to long term damage should he continue with that style. I would love for you to react to their music video and tell us what you think. As a fellow aussie and consistent critic i value your input. Knocked Loose - and i still wander south.

Hi, I’m an audio engineer (not professionally, but have done it for 10+ years and I studied it) Primarily, the best way to attain the super high pitch he’s getting in those high vocals is just to eq the ranges you don’t want out of the mix. In audio a typical rule of thumb is to cut things out or peel them back a little, around the sound you want, instead of just boosting the sound you want. Usually done through a mixture of compressions, eq, and in this case it sounds like they’re also using a really short delay to sort of layer a send and a callback on his highs very closely together. But, also, he 100% has to be able to pull off that vocal live, coming from his own body. Engineers can only work with what they’re given. This man is a monster. I also agree with you 100% about that into melody continuing through the song. “Unstoppable” is a great word. It makes me think of Cthulhu, for real. It’s my favorite little bit about this song. The atmosphere it encourages makes a huge difference.

As an extreme vocalist the highs he is getting aren't really all that uncommon in the genre. Those highs or chaotics as some in the genre call them are actually in a lot of ways much easier than getting the low gutterals. The highs, while harder to sustain and do correctly aren't as hard to achieve vs the lows. The gutterals and lows that you hear are achieved by face and mouth shape, basically you are pulling your face back to help open up the throat better, think of when someone does the awkward double chin smile where they pull their chin back as far as they can. Now take those movements and add in breath and control to those low notes and that is where the true talent comes in. While a lot of people applaud the chaotic notes in metal singing, in my opinion it is those lows that are to be applauded.
@squallloky
@squallloky 2 жыл бұрын
I had my vocals taped for a demo and the engineer did little to no mixing on them, we just added double layers of lows and highs. I'm using an inspired technique which makes both reach their extremes. It has always been easy for me to reach mid-high screams with a regular technique. Gosh I wish I still had this tape from 15y ago. Basement tapes were so fun :p

I can't sing clean for crap, but when I was younger I hit a couple of those lower growls purely by accident just playing around with my voice. Learning how to hit them didn't seem that hard to me (though there's a risk of damage if you push too hard in the wrong spots.) Learning how to hold it, put power into it, and especially *maintain* that power in it? That is fucking work. And then to do it all over again for the other ranges and techniques... and figuring out how to switch between them without missing or losing it... yeah, that's not just talent, it's dedication to the craft as well.

I love your take, Julia! You nailed it when you said he was screaming inwardly at the "demon pig" part, but actually the low EEEEEEEEEEE sound at that drop you liked is done inwardly, too! (Lots of parts are. He's so good at the transition that it's hard to tell!) This comes primarily from a style of music called grindcore. Some vocalists find it easier to draw in a guttural sound and hold it than to scream that outward. (Myself included, though I'm sure he's light headed by the end of a set.) Also when you say the highs were not registering well, there is a reason for that. While most of this song is more along the lines of technical death metal, it begins as a symphonic black metal piece. Black metal is where that high, wailing, howling scream comes from, and it's often pushed back behind that wall of sound to create dissonance. I highly recommend Gorgoroth's "Under The Pagan Megalith," if you'd like to hear what some daddies of the genre sound like!

Also I envy her, the "roller-coaster" effect of HELP I'M FRIGHTENED and yet you rewind, you want always more of that heavy riffs that have the power of blasting your bad day away. That's rad to see. I watched that video with a smile on my face, she looks happy. I listen to heavy metal for a long time now, and being impressed is something that became rare for me.
