Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars - Demo First Impressions

Soo uhhh yeah this all happened a lot quicker than I expected. We got a lot more info about the NieR Replicant / Automata team's latest RPG Tabletop thing, Voice of Cards The Isle Dragon roars. We also have our first demo hot and ready to go. Yoko Taro basically showed up, told me to drop what I was doing and make this video. I figured I'd share my first thoughts about the game and what I think about it. Spoilers, I'm thinkin' pretty good. Anyways, let me know what you think about the game in the commentos.

I thought the game was good. It kinda reminded me of D&D. The narrator being your DM and your party being a random group of misfits or an organized group like one you control in the demo. I'm excited for this game to come out next month. :)

This game came out of nowhere..and it could be my game of the decade.I am still looking for a big turned based rpg after playing DQXII.I have to say that I tried Darkest Dungeon,Xcom2 and Banner Saga -thy are all good,but not on the same level as DQXII

The game has a lot of charm. But I think they need some kind of animation speed toggle in the full game. Like the transition when going into battles. Cool the first few times you see it, but then it becomes the most annoying thing after 20 battles. And when you're in town and unlocking backstory for every townsperson you meet, that delay when the card pops up telling you that you've unlocked their backstory, I don't need to see that for every person. It just makes the game feel super slow and unresponsive.

I really liked it! I just wish we had voice acting from each character, not just the narrator. I think that really would have helped the world come to life, especially since the card esthetic will already be hard for people to connect with.

It is consistent, that, yes you *are* playing with only one other person and that is the Game Master but I would like the option for character voices. Only the Game Master voicing the adventure makes sense though

Yeah the fact the queen couldn’t give any detailed information on the item, the doors having already been built and locked despite supposedly the theft happening recently, and my hunch that the man who ran from the castle being the skinny boy all come together to lead me to the conclusion the queen wanted the liquid for nefarious purposes like harnessing some power against other nations.

I loved the demo! Oct 28 can't arrive fast enough... I've never played card games such as this, so I was surprised to find I enjoyed playing it. Something about the Narrator's voice is relaxing to me. Also, I like the fact the world is only shown through cards! The lack of solid descriptions for the world allows me to imagine it as I see fit

I completed the demo yesterday and really enjoyed it! The thing that stuck out to me the most was how much I enjoyed the sound design in combination with the animations: The flipping of cards, the movement of your pawn on the map and killing enemies all felt great. Also, not really a fan of Wynifred’s artwork. It looks good, but it leans a little to much into pointless fanservice without having any practical application or purpose like 2B for instance. Luckily, she seems to be the outlier rather than the norm. The art style in general I really like.

It felt really slow, the animations and transitions are beautiful, but it just takes so much time and just drags on and on. Extremely evident in their in-game Gwent-like card game. Reminds me of how FFIX is with all their loading time battle intro “animations”.

I think if they reserved a button for something like that it would be perfect. Tap the button to skip the animation, hold it to make it 2x faster, and have the option to customize how it behaves in the options menu.

@@joshuataylor7443 Davidvinc seems a bit too biased when talking ablut the game, but i can see his point. Loading screen time can depend on what you are playing the game. When i played it on my pc, loading screens didn't feel that bad. The story and characters are not all that interesting in the demo. They seem like characters out of a Yoko Taro weapon story to me. Since it is just a demo we don't have a full idea how the game is going to be in the end. Story could very well become very Yoko Taro like in the end who knows. If it is basicly Dragon Quest 1 in Card form, or just dnd sidequest storys, then the game might not have a strong enough hook to play it. Narator is depending on taste and the monotone voice seems deliberate to complement the athmosphäre they are going for. Gameplay is at this point very simple. Animations could be a bit faster and the gameplay needs more complexity to fully take advantage of the everything is a card idea. So yeah, davidvinc is not wrong, but i wouldn't be so negativ about it. Wait until the game is out, make yourself a picture of what the full game is like and what it does good and then decide if you want to buy it. Game is not a AAA game so think about if you would get your money worth of enjoyment out of it or wait for sale.

Played the demo today and enjoyed it. Idea immediately reminded me of Hand of Fate, but fully committing to the cards even in combat. Love Slay the Spire, enjoyed my time with Hand of Fate back when, and looking forward to this now!

I played the demo a couple weeks ago and I gotta say, I think it's pretty cool. Initially I thought that the idea was cool but I wasn't that interested, but the whole thing didn't leave my head so I decided to try it out. As someone who's not really into tabletop or card games that much I'm definitely considering picking it up, especially since I feel like it could tap into a more imaginative headspace than most other games allow. Only reason I'm probably not gonna pick it up right away is that I'm in the middle of a long JRPG now and I know for sure I'll pick up the new Pokemon in November and Advance Wars in December

My brother give a Nintendo switch for my birthday and one of the fisrt thing i did was to download this game and i wan to say thst is awesome , I am not a fan of card games and i was not sure how to play it but the game is good enought to get the idea after some battle . @@joshuataylor7443 While i respect david for playing lots of different games in the jrpg genre, there are a lot of his opinions i don't agree with. He doesn't seem to have much of a high opinion for indie/lower production cost games and usually misses the value of things that stray from the norm. While i do find it odd since people who play LOTS of games in a certain genre generally love to find something new or innovative, it's his opinion. I will say that i did not see the long loading times he mentioned when i played the demo, so not sure what that is about.

My only worry is that the narrator will be the *only* voice in the game, I don’t see the emotionally charged scenes to hit as hard if it’s one dude talking back and forth to himself, but if that is the case I trust the team to come up with something interesting Otherwise I absolutely loved what I saw from the demo and will probably be locking myself away from the world for a time when this gets released

I think it's more likely that whoever directing the voice actor intentionally wanted them to keep the same voice throughout. I know that happens with Nolan North a lot whenever he gets a role.

Oh man when I heard card game I was iffy. I was going to give it a shot regardless though. I just played the Demo and it seems the card thing is just aesthetic. Honestly I loved it. I’ll be buying the full game this week. It’s sad to see so little on the game though. Very few KZbin reviews or people talking about it. I agree with some criticism on the game and maybe it just doesn’t bother me because I’m a Yoko Taro fan but I really wish this game was being given more buzz. Maybe after I play the full game I’ll understand?

AI is very stupid, implemented with only randomness I think (this is very visible in town's game), that is very lazy :/ And cards mean board game, good, but using physical-world-like elements EVERYWHERE even when it does not make sense it pretty annoying (menus ? xp/coins ?) as it adds a lot of unnecessary animations that make the UI clunky and unconvenient in the end. The way you manage your equipment is not convenient, and it doesn't seem like you can reorder your fight skills… I love video games, I love RPGs, and those little issues make the addition of cards ruining it instead of enhancing it. And they didn't even use board game elements when it would matter: there seems to be some randomness in damages (two examples: you deal ±1 to 2 damages difference sometimes compared to what you'd expect, and the critical seems to come from nowhere), and random encounters are handled you-dont-know-where too :/ It's like a promise half-broken. I love board games, I love card games, and this is NOT giving me good "board game" feelings because of this.

Most people will dismiss this because it is a card game, even though its not a card game at all. I tried the demo and when i realized that it wasn't a card game, but a JRPG disguised as one, i was turned off. Its Yoko Taro, so i will probably give it another go. But i was not impressed by this. I was hoping for another Slay the Spire, which is perfection.

I felt like Winnifred was interesting, and how she butt heads with the older man, but it didn’t really feel like enough to keep me engaged. not a fan of the demo since its not doing enough to hook you in, and with the fact that its suppose to be a DnD adaptation but it feels extremely linear since you cant travel far but then again its a prelude and a demo so who know what you can really do compare to actual DnD. The combat animations is really slow needs to speed up, only reason i m sticking around is to see the reviews and that I know it takes a few hours before the twist and turns really start to happen like drakengard, and nier. The music is obviously great as always and artwork as well since same artist and composer for a majority of Taros work. I just hope this isnt a meh experience like his mobile game ventures.

Thought the demo to be quite boring tbh. I mean, the story will surely be something unique in the end, but the gameplay is just too bland. And as interesting as the card aesthetic is on the first glance, I cannot see it being endearing after a few hours.

I found that the GM style narration was pretty cool, but after a while in the game, I kinda desired for the characters themselves to have voices of their own. Just thought that would really help imo. Also I know this game is supposed to be a heavily story based game, but the card battles seem a tad bit too weak. Not saying the system itself is bad, just that it needs a little flash, a little pizazz, like maybe some dynamic dialogue other than the occasional "Excellent" from the GM whenever you land a critical hit.

Me the one lost kingdoms fan: Awww Oh and I have to say this but since it's square enix I'm pretty sure some people are at least aware of the bravely series and this is actually giving me vibes of the demo for bravely second where you have a group of travelers basically representing the Three musketeers going to find something I honestly forget it's been years but the thing that clicked me the most was when you said that the enemies have little backstories something that the bravely series was known for in the first two entries not the bravely default 2 which is the third entry in the game and I understand your confusion if you've never come across this. Bravely default 2 is not even remotely as good as the first two games which is sad in several aspects.

The only console I have is the Switch and it's kindda the first Yoko Taro game I have access to, so I think I'll go play the demo. I was very pleasantly surprised when I got the heads-up of the imminent release of this game, and doubly surprised (in a pleasant way) with the choice of art style and setting. Drakengard 3 is a guilty pleasure of mine, and the character designs in particular. This is definitely going in my wishlist. Queen Nilla (Vanilla) eh? If this takes its inspirations from where I think it does I'll have to send Yoko Taro my personal thanks.

Watching this 'Tuber only confirmed that playing it myself was the better policy, because he'd already made up his mind that he wasn't going to enjoy the experience, and it only went *downhill* from there.

The narrator seems a bit depressed though. I wish he was more hyped. When you win a battle in this game you hear the most low key "congrats". Whereas in Darkest Dungeon you get a crit and the narrator shouts "Executed with Impunity!!!!" I'd love a narrator that actually cares about the story they are telling.

Honestly, I was very disappointed by the demo. I love card games, tabletop RPGs and Yoko Taro's works so I was really looking forward to it and the visual aesthetic is still something I dig but the fact it plays like a normal turn based RPG just seems so lazy to me. There's so much potential with a game like this yet the gameplay is no different than any run of the mill turn based. Another thing is that the narrator voice acting all the characters makes them sound devoid of life and imo lose a lot of personality. I also hope the story in the main game will be more interesting and less cliche. I might be a little harsh on it considering it's a side project and not even a fully priced game but I still expected better.

Mmmm you stated some reasons why I like it. The narrator gives off that homely tabletop vibe. It’s also reminiscent of Thomas Was Alone. I like RPGs no matter what form they take and the rules of this one are easy to understand and pick up... Like a tabletop game. Sorry to hear it falls outside your appeal range. you know they changed some stuff in the demo right? on purpose to don't spoil stuff at the end of the demo the narrator acted a little so i think maybe he will act more in the story. The story and main characters were also swapped and its a tabletop rpg and tabletop rpgs like for example D6D are turn based dude that is a rule of this genre

I loved the demo. Replayed it a bunch of times. I find hilarious how EVERYTHING IS A CARD. Want to adjust audio volume on the menu? There ain’t no sliders here, only a set of cards with different audio configurations ranging from “mute” to “loudest” The sounds of the cards and the pieces moving is so weirdly satisfying. The hidden events like the Bizarrock or when you go to the Apothecary after meeting the muscle man, where you first find the full game protagonist being a whiny brat “Make it cheaper!” Only got tired because I replayed so much that I knew almost everything that was in the demo.

I can not express how happy I was to play the demo and find out its not another Gacha like Sinoalice. That said the demo itself didn't thrill me, really slow animation for the cards while movement feels too fast. I know its the tutorial but still the combat feels incredibly basic. Autoleveling heroes. Unskippable random encounters. Art that is 50% interesting character art but everything else looks pretty generic and I worry how they can make the card aesthetic feel fresh after 20+ hours. Really holding out hope we'll see some Yoko Taro switch ups in the rest of the game. Card based shmup? Bullet hell dodging on the world map? Maybe the character at the table getting up and we'll have a real third person interlude of our character walking through the town? Certainly I expect the characters at the table will be doing something or be more than just a framing device.

Maybe 45-60 minutes, 30 if you just go from A to B
