I am a Buckeye Fan & was a basketball junkie back then. RIP Coach & thanks for the memories. There won't ever be a guy like Bobby Knight again.

I’ve been listening to Don Fischer since the 1970s, and even though I live in Texas, I still listen to his broadcasts. He’s one of the greatest - right up there with Harry Cary, Ernie Harwell, Vin Skully, Ray Scott, Jack Buck, and yes, even Jack Brickhouse. Hey, hey!

I admire the ability he had as a coach, definitely one of the greatest. I find it hard to get past his personality, the controversy and temper, especially the way he mistreated people. The only coach I can think of who was similar was Woody Hayes at Ohio State, then maybe Bo Schembechler at Michigan.

I think Knight's greatest points are that he didn't cheat, and graduated his players. Whether he won the NCAA is of course another mark, but the other two are more important

People forget… but the ‘74-‘75 IU team was Knight’s best team, better and deeper than the following year’s undefeated team. In fact, THAT team (it went 31-1) was probably the best college basketball team ever! EVER!! IU lost to Kentucky 92-90 in Dayton in the 1975 NCAA Regional Final. They should have beaten Kentucky in that game even with Scott May’s broken arm. Hell, they’d already beaten Kentucky by 24 POINTS earlier in the season (98-74), in Louisville, KENTUCKY!! Despite May’s broken arm in the Tournament, IU still had outside sharpshooter Steve Green & Supersub John Laskowski in 1975, both of whom were lost to graduation after the ‘74-‘75 season. Yet IU STILL went undefeated in ‘75-‘76! That shows how great that ‘74-‘75 IU team was! It’s also a travesty that, due to the loss to Kentucky, IU didn’t get a chance to knock down UCLA in the 1975 championship game. EVERYONE in the country was waiting for that matchup. But once IU was “beaten” and knocked out of the Tournament, everyone knew UCLA would beat Kentucky. Easily. Which they did. Poor officiating cost IU that Kentucky game, as the officials “let them play” (I.e., let IU get mugged!). I saw it for myself. If that hadn’t happened, IU would have had back-to-back undefeated seasons. And a final IU/UCLA National Championship matchup would have probably been the highest rated televised college basketball game ever! IU had undefeated back-to-back Big Ten seasons playing in the tough Big Ten back then (i.e., not having a lot of cupcakes on the schedule like a certain powerhouse college basketball program on the west coast had). Those were incredible Knight-coached IU teams! But the ‘75 IU basketball team WAS better.

I agree 100%--as great as the undefeated 75-76 team was the 74-75 team was BETTER!! Sportswriter Bob Hammel, who covered the Hoosiers throughout Knight's tenure at Indiana said that his first reaction after they won the 1976 NCAA title was: "Should have been two." THAT speaks volumes about how great that 74-75 team was--Knight STILL hadn't gotten over that team not winning it all, even in the glow of a newly crowned national championship!!

Grew up in Indiana playing basketball as much as possible. Went to Bob Knight basketball camp in 1980 when I was 14. It’s true that almost every high school coach in the state run Bob Knight motion offense and Bob Knight man to man help defense. I never played a zone defense in my life - wouldn’t have any idea what to do.

Now that he's gone, nobody will still talk openly about his tactics ... Knight was THE first coach in American history to legitimize the use of physical intimidation and force as a routine coaching tool ... Other coaches before him did it - AZ St FB coach Frank Kush once slugged his punter in the stomach and Woody Hayes assaulted an opposing player after intercepting a pass ... I knew a player on the '76 IU team and another on the '79 team who told me that he routinely assaulted other players and coaches to make his point ...

The problem with these interviews like this that you guys don't understand the culture .... You find out who's for you and who is against you.... Look up past interviews with dakich and do your homework the next time! That's why Fisher was smiling when you said that.😡

Bobby Knight was an embarrassment to his profession, his school and his country. He abused his players who were kids put in his care by their parents. And humiliated his country by his self indulgent temper tantrums. He demanded self control , yet had none.
