I have a slight lisp and I work as a radio announcer. People dig it. There's much more to it than just a voice.

1. billboard the product or service. 2. smile when you speak. 3. Something to get the listeners attention 4. Have variety of pitch, and begin with a higher pitch at the beginning. 5. Read ahead on the script. 6. Don't sound like you are reading. 7. Sound natural..conversational 8. Sound believable 9. Being yourself 10. Be mysterious 11. Be 'breathy'. 12. Focus on WHAT you are reading. 13. Get into character reflective of the product or service.

This is awesome to me, someone first considering VO after 20 years talking on the phone for a living, on two levels: One, the wealth of excellent advice in under 10 min. from an obviously seasoned veteran pro, delivered in an easy-to-understand, CONVERSATIONAL manner; and two, it's very encouraging--and this is meant with all due respect--that a person can succeed in this field despite having a vocal defect such as a pronounced lisp, if they have aptitude and perseverance. Well done, sir.

Thank you Dan, you really created something of value here to the beginning voice over talent out there. So many voice over professionals are afraid to put out any information they might not get paid for- to them this video would probably have a $50 price tag at least.

Incredible advice! Very useful! Thank you so much. Those of you who are pointing out his disability.... it's always like this: THE BEST financial director has/had financial problems himself, the marriage counsellor is usually divorced and a dietist was overweight before... etc...etc. You know the saying: we all teach, we both need to learn!!! :-) xxxx

On the outset Dan may have a lisp but don't let that stray you from the message-solid information from years of really listening to talent and knowing how the human voice can express, convey, emote and move a listener. Enjoy the "vocal mystery" idea!! Thank you Dan!

@apacheslim The only surefire way I know of is to speak in a low voice as much as you can. The downside here is that you'll cause permanent damage to your larynx. A famous example of this is Michael Dorn - he spent so long forcing his voice lower to play Worf, that it's damaged his throat and lowered his natural tone by 2 whole octaves.
