Essentially Irish voices. Wonderful singing. See the faces of the listeners... when singing is as good as this, it can only put you into a reflective frame of mind... wish I'd been there!

My parents played this 78 every Xmas/New Year party they hosted, with around 24-30 relatives turning up, most staying overnight. Looking back, I’m amazed at the energy and effort that went into these parties and their staying power till 2 am. These days I’m fading by 9 0’clock.

As I roved out on a fine May morning To view the meadows and flowers gay, Who should I spy but my own true lover As she sat under yon willow tree. I took off my hat and I did salute her, I did salute her most courageously. When she turned around, well the tears fell from her, Sayin', “False young man, you have deluded me! “A diamond ring I owned I gave you, A diamond ring to wear on your right hand. But the vows you made, love, you went and broke them And married the lassie that had the land.” “If I'd married the lassie that had the land, my love, It's that I'll rue till the day I die. When misfortune falls sure no man may shun it, I was blindfolded I'll ne'er deny.” Now at nights when I go to my bed of slumber The thoughts of my true love run in my mind. When I turned around to embrace my darling, Instead of gold sure it's brass I find. And I wish the Queen would call home her army From the West Indies, Amerikay and Spain, And every man to his wedded woman In hopes that you and I will meet again

here's the verse I was clumsily referring to before. The Voice Squad sing it in this vid but Planxty don't. It makes the whole stew a bit thicker ;-) ...For to delude you, how can that be my love It's from your body I am quite free. I'm as free from you as the child unborn is And so are you too, dear Jane, from me.

Can someone tell me the origins of this song? Sounds like it comes from the early 19th century.
@theone57763 жыл бұрын
There are two main theories as to the context and meaning behind the song. Both seem to put it sometime around the reign of Queen Victoria, so around the mid 19th century.
@fboyg913 жыл бұрын
@@theone5776 one of the last lines had me thinking like 1810-1812. Talking about wishing the queen would recall the troops from the West Indies, America, and Spain. The only time they would have been in all three places at the same time would have been the Napoleonic wars.
