Fun fact, this wasn't a pre-planned performance. It was a last minute addition & besides Cissy, they kept it true to the mic toss tradition. NONE of them knew the order of which they would go, there was a director on the side pointing to tell them who was next. Which just shows the musical excellence & improvisation of the Black Church. & As you mentioned they were truly building up the song, but it makes it so much more interesting knowing they did so without the knowledge of who would do which part. VBA stepped out with her foot on the gas because the director knew Shirley was about to start preaching 😂 he was on the side telling VBA to GO before she really got started ☠️

@@kiiwiispicegood question! I wasn't even born 😂 I'll have to ask my grandma. She sung R&B & then gospel but is friends with Cissy, which is how I knew about the behind the scenes of this performance. I do know that the Clark Sisters televised Grammy performance was in 1983, this particular performance is in 87, but it was still rare to see. Let me see if something that predates those.

Exactly They use to show different genres of music on these music award shows like gospel, jazz, blues and etc. Now all they show is the same old people and same old genres of music country, pop and hip hop. Now they only cater to young audience. Back in the day they would show different singers and groups for the whole family

Point of correction, Sir........."I Surrender All" was written by American art teacher and musician Judson W. Van DeVenter (1855-1939). Andrae popularized it though, especially within contemporary gospel circles.

I needed to hear your message at the end. I was just diagnosed with Cervical Cancer Stage 2. Curable, but the chemotherapy and radiation treatments that are upcoming scare me to death. I've been a mess, crying breakdowns, prayer. Anxiety on 10. I'm asking for prayers and a peace that surpasses understanding. I know God is in control, but this is scary. I have an adult child with special needs and I'm not ready to leave him. So, kindly put a prayer out into the universe for me. Thank you. ❤

Another thing to note: the sounds changed as the regions change. There was a stark change as they moved from a smoother NJ and LA to a more raw NC and MS, and then a flashier Detroit, etc. It just shows the beauty and the evolution of gospel and the distinct influence of this particular group of singers. Love this video. Keep it up, Jaron!

Suggestion: In honor of new "color purple" movie maybe do an analysis on Margaret Avery' s classic version of "God is trying to tell you something". Or maybe once the new movie is released do a compare and contrast "IF" they sign the same song.

I had this recorded on my VHS when I was a kid and I literally watched this every day and I searched the Internet for a long time before I was able to find it. This is one of my all-time favorite collaborations. Tramaine Hawkins was one of my favorites when I was probably five years old because I listened to going up yonder all the time Shirley Caesar because of hold my Mule, Lynette Hawkins gives me chillszzz & Sandra Crouch is amazing! I think I mentioned this performance on the Yolanda & Tank video. This performance needs to be an audio download. When they go A-cappella, I go speechless…I am in a Heavenly Realm by then…this will NEVER get old & ALL ARTISTS can stand to use this as a blueprint! Everyone is just on one accord & it’s powerful…Jaron, your analysis are so spot on, I want vocal lessons from you & I can’t even sing but I KNOW YOU WOULD TEACH ME HOW TO PROPERLY CARRY A NOTE…my son told me you were the best! So blessed to have found you!!! ❤🙏🏾🙌🏾

I love your commentary Jaron as you are extremely knowledgeable. All of these artists are indeed legends and one of my greatest inspirations is in fact the late great Pastor Andraé Crouch. He wrote many and more of the songs that you mentioned but I have heard it said a couple of times by different sources that he wrote “I surrender all” . It was the second track on his 1978 live in London album but it was a hymn from the 19th century and not one of his compositions. That being said I love his arrangement and he is a legend here in the UK which he visited many times and around the globe.
