Good grief! The colors and dynamics she has in just one song is insane. Endless dynamics and control.

The characterization within the song is bananas! That is why she is a Broadway Icon!!!

She’s brilliant- you should analyze her Everything’s Coming Up Roses from Gypsy- I saw it live and it was like a foghorn. So intentional. So emotive. Chords of steel.

Great stuff Jaron, and thank you for delivering Stephen Sondheim from the mortifying brevity of TikTok! To deliver something this big, but with so much nuance, just goes to show how great of a singing actor we have had for the past 40 years in Miss Patti Lupone; and also, what brilliantly effective settings Sondheim gave to his own marvellous lyrics in the songs he created for _Company._ When the show debuted in 1970, it was unlike anything else that had ever appeared on the musical stage, and 50 years have scarcely aged it all. His genius lay, in part, in the acuity of his observations of the human condition, which he expressed in the granular detail of his lyrics. For performers like Lupone, Bernadette Peters, Joanna Gleason, Dean Jones, Raul Ésparza and Neil Patrick Harris (playing Bobby in this video), his writing is both a gift and an inspiration. Patti's _Ladies Who Lunch_ is a masterclass in using the text to paint a character. There's a British actress, beloved of Sondheim, called Maria Friedman, who has also directed a number of superb revivals of his shows. I'm particular obsessed with this recital performance, somewhere in Spain (who knew?) of _Losing my Mind_ from his love letter to Broadway _Follies._ It's off the beaten track, but I'm sure you would enjoy it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmGzZ2Z_bdCjmtksi=nyCGYXsb3CEzP5nc

You need to react to her Anything Goes live performance from 1988!! Also I’d heavily recommend the 2011 performance (Sondheim’s 80th) of “Could I Leave You” from Follies interpreted by the masterful Donna Murphy
