What we see here is more than a great tribute, but to belt out a Broadway legend's signature song in front of her & the song's legendary composer? This is a prime example of an artist's work continuing to breath & live on beyond the performer. To say this moment is a "passing of the torch" doesn't nearly quantify what this moment means. From Patti's POV, it's an attempt to give new life to a celebrated work in front of the artisans who created it. To both Elaine & Steve, it's assurance that their art will continue to live on & inspire. Now that both are gone & Patti to this day takes up the mantle of this song for a new generation, it's a microcosm example of how great art is immortal. We rarely have an opportunity to see this realization play out in front of our eyes.
