Patti said in an interview that this was the only time she was ever nervous performing. And when Elaine embraced her at the end, she nearly was brought to tears.

She doesn't seem nervous at all. When she steps to the front of the stage with that little grin saying "I'd like to propose a toast" it seems more like she knows she's going to slay that performance. Wonderful

Love that bit - especially since Mz. Stritch (Mrs.? Ms.? idk) is notorious in these circles for her own performance of "The Ladies Who Lunch." I don't know whether it was Stritch, LuPone, or anyone else in the production who planned this moment, but I'm so glad they did.

@@Landis963 LuPone asked the director during the dress rehearsal where Elaine would be sitting, and sent it out her way because she knew Elaine always wore a hat. Elaine was surprised (either at rehearsal or show, I do not know!) but it's absolutely great either way and such a nice acknowledgment within the performance! I tear up every time I see it

Elaine sings it like she's in a one on one with a therapist or trusted friend, like, venting right from the beginning. patti sings it like she's talking over people at a party in a way that makes everyone notice she's too drunk to be here, starting off jokey and then getting darker and meaner. Both are amazing interpretations, and that hug at the end got me crying a bit.

That is one of the awesomest things I've ever heard. I'm not even a fan of the genre, but I got shivers from her. I only knew her voice from "Anything Goes"; I'd never seen her perform. She's got such incredible power and accuracy (3:35, where she throws out "ev-ry-bo-dy" and then nails "DIES!" an octave above it?!) and her face is remarkably expressive. At first I didn't care for what I thought was over-enunciation, but I get how it's important on stage, and it doesn't detract from enjoying the music. Must find more like this . . .

I've been watching this video on a loop for the last week. Also Elaine's version, studio recording, and some other versions trying to gasp what this song means. Besides how incredible this performance is, can we focus on how Patty turns the invitation to rise for a toast to a war declaration in mere seconds? It's so subtle how each time she sings "rise", the meaning of the word shifts along with her body and expression. I'm just blown away by her talent.

love this song so much. starts as one woman bitterly judging all the other women around her and their vapid, superficial lives- then turns inwards, and reveals that her true ire lies with the sexist systems in place, but since she doesn't have the power to affect any of it she just funnels her resentment towards the women themselves.

What we see here is more than a great tribute, but to belt out a Broadway legend's signature song in front of her & the song's legendary composer? This is a prime example of an artist's work continuing to breath & live on beyond the performer. To say this moment is a "passing of the torch" doesn't nearly quantify what this moment means. From Patti's POV, it's an attempt to give new life to a celebrated work in front of the artisans who created it. To both Elaine & Steve, it's assurance that their art will continue to live on & inspire. Now that both are gone & Patti to this day takes up the mantle of this song for a new generation, it's a microcosm example of how great art is immortal. We rarely have an opportunity to see this realization play out in front of our eyes.

I like how Elaine nods her head so the people in the way back can see she is in fact wearing a hat, probably for our benefit. RIP Stephen Sondheim.

Idk if some knows, but she’s the great grand niece of Adelina Patti, a celebrated well-known classical vocalist from the 1860’s-1914. An expensive opera singer too earning $5000 worth of gold every performance.
