We should not forget that usually Ruben writes and sings in Dutch. To convey the feelings of the song in English is extra impressive for a singer his age.

Ruben is kind of "criminally overlooked" i feel, he had such beautiful songs on the show, and for such a young man (he was the youngest on the show) he already is an amazing story teller when he sings. Also his own music are "old fashioned" lyrics based songs, with a meaning and a story. And he's a really nice guy i think, as i saw him on the show, his personality, he's a good guy for sure. (not important to make good music, but it helps a great deal in likability factor hehe) I hope you'll react to a few more of his songs, he certainly deserves it i think. As you said, he has a maturity in his way of singing, making music, that you rarely see these days, let alone from someone his age. I'm so glad you did Ruben and especially this song. He did a phenomenal job and I just love his husky voice. And man, how gutsy must you be to sing a song like that when your twenty, the way he did, to a beautiful girl like Emma only a few meters away. Massive respect for that. And I love his cheeky smile at the end.

I remember i expected a boyband voice coming out of slick looking Ruben. (Not that its a bad thing,you know,i expected a girlband voice out of Emma,since she is soo adorable) But when he sang a Sting song......wowzerz! I remember thinking to myself "is that HIS voice????!" 1:36 If i saw her looking at me like that....laaaawd geezus,i would not be able to handle it LOL. 6:01 Mah boy Ruben put Tim into a trance! :-O

Good reaction Valerie, some years ago we had a competition in the Netherlands that was called "the best singer - songwriter. In 2015 he became second in this competition. Unfortunately this TV program was skipped there after. But this competition brought us very interesting young tallented singer - songwriters. Ruben and Douwe Bob are the most famous of them. What I like so much about Ruben is his personality. He is so friendly and down to earth. He wrote the song thad Floor did in beste zangers "I don't know a thing about love". You reacted on this song 2 months ago. He wrote that song at the age of 16/17 years about the divorce of his parents.

Control isn't the word, I think you meant relaxed power over silence. Silence during a speech but also in songs can be very powerful when used correctly, and to use it in a relaxed manner by letting to some degree loose of his timing control... perfect! In the day of auto-tune / perfect pitch and perfect tkming that we in today with all the computer aids we have, letting all that go and seeing a human of flesh and blood sing this with that much feeling... priceless! Because too much perfection removes human nature out of music, at least in my opinion.

Agreed! Who would've thought you could find a complete new dimension to a classic! Works well for a singer-songwriter with as much soul as Ruben has. Ahh yes Ruben. The odd man out of the season. Much as I try I'm not able to remember a single song he did. Good voice and apparently a good songwriter, but sadly not much of a performer. Never moved out of his comfort zone. To be fair he might have felt overwhelmed by the company he found himself in, and I can't really blame him if that was the case. The fact that none of the others picked him for a duet in the last episode pretty much says it all. And his own duet with Tim was just a stupid song. Can't imagine what made him pick that one.

@@Rosannasfriend Guess it's all in the eye of the beholder, and of course it's just my personal opinion. He just didn't do anything that caught my attention. And i'm not saying he was bad either. He just never reached the level of the others. This song he sings ok, but he doesn't really add anything to it. He doesn't make it his own.

Ruben is still evolving as an artist. He's barely 20 or 21. I think he held his own very well with much more experienced singers. All of his performances were strong. For a young person, his style is very personal and honest, which isn't as in style right now. He has an old soul and a whiskey tinged tone which will only getter richer with age. But his true gift is as a songwriter. All of the singers shone on his night with his deeply felt songs. He reminds me of a young John Denver. The voice and presence is different but the kind, generous and thoughtful songwriting and honest delivery rings true.
