I had no idea Anya Taylor-Joy could sing until I recently heard this song in a movie trailer. Today we're analyzing her cover of Downtown.

Anya is multi talented. I think it might be a tie for the most expressive eyes between her and Aurora.

Saw the film not that long ago. Had not seen this music video. The video does a really good job of A: showcasing Anya's singing talent, B: sharing just enough of the film to draw you in, but C: not giving too much away, plot and spoilers-wise. Very well-done music video! As of this comment, this reaction video was posted two months ago. Don't know if you've had a chance to see the film, yet. Obviously you're a music reactor, not a film reactor, but I'm sure we'd all be curious to know what you thought of the film itself. Very interesting look at show business...

It really felt like by the end she was going to go really big on the finish. It felt like she could do it just as flawlessly as the rest of the song, and it felt like it would fit there. Yet, it feels better that she didn't. Like she knows she could do it, we know she could do it, but she's just going to keep it at that lower energy, because she can. Sometimes less is more, and it seemed to really work here. The most ironic thing is if she went big, it would have felt so natural that I would have never thought we missed anything.

Well said! You're so right. The choice she made for the ending really fit everything that came before.

Agreed. And that's saying a lot. It really is a great movie. I was fortunate to not know anything about it upon my first viewing, and while I had my suspicions, I was completely blown away by that ending. It's honestly one of the best movies I've seen in a while. Edgar Wright is a master of his craft.

This is lovely! Not easy to sing slowly like this and not lose the resonance or fullness and still manage to add the little variations. Clear as a bell on those "downtown"s, and yes, it does sound like a mix to me with the fullness in it and a her soft palate maybe making room for the sound to fill the back of the pharynx a bit more, too. Overall her larynx seems so relaxed much of the time, that you can hear some of the air escaping in a tiny bit of breathiness 'hiss' of air. So well done! Thank you for introducing me to her. Never knew she could sing!

Anya did a really great cover of Downtown: her voice was ethereal, like a fairy telling a tale as old as time. She really is a great story teller (actor and singer).

Hi! For me Petula Clark - Down Town. (Number one) But I also like. Anya Taylor-Joy. Cover version. Anya´s voice sound so different compared to other female singer. Emma Bunton - Down Town. Cover version is also great! Thanks Voice Teacher! For your Anya reactions! 🎵🎤🙂

Love the songs and the comments/ analysis of them. If you haven't done so already, I think you should try a Linkin Park song. Chester Bennington's voice was so uniquely amazing. But I love what you are doing. Great job 👍. Keep it up.

Great treatment! Usually the song is beaten to death but this treatment allows for the emotionality to ooze out .. I'm glad I lived long enough to hear this. The radio was the format for music in the 60's and there was informal rule that a song was no longer than 3 to 3.5 minutes for publishing (allowing for commercials). Poor Petula Clark had to beat out this song in the limits that radio required, eliminating lushness, complexity, and emotionality of the song. Thank the muse that the internet and KZbin changed this!

I so love this young woman. She’s so talented in whatever medium she has chosen to perform with. I was a kid when I’d sing with Petula Clark’s sweet voice coming out of our radio when i first heard it in an Oldies channel in the late 70’s. My parents loved their 60’s music. But, THIS cover grabbed my soul. Loved that she slowed the tempo down from its original. Especially when she throws in “…I know…” sliding to a higher note, unlike Petula’s version. Anya sounded so amazingly sweet in this cover. Lovely to the ears. 🎼🤙🏾

Bethany: Surely this song & the movie scenes from "Last Night In Soho" in the video are hooking you into seeing what was such a creative movie by Edgar Wright ... the actors, the music, the photography, the story line were all truly wonderful ... let us know what you think of LNIS when you've seen it... Anna has a very pleasant voice. But not a memorable voice (IMO). It's sweet and clear and probably very appropriate for that place in the movie. However, I love her in "Queen's Gambit". She really showed what a great actress she is in that series. Also like her in "The Northman", but not wild about the movie. She is becoming a Mega Star.

Talking about angels, i would like you, hear this song video " Celtic Woman 'O Come All Ye Faithful' and HA-ASH - Supongo Que Lo Sabes. I cant believe it is possible sing like this. Amazing, Another level. i like so much your channel and how you making the videos, you seems like you are so proffessional, clever, nothing subjetive, or been influence about the person, character or fame. And i remember, this video son, Lola Indigo, TINI, Belinda - Niña de la Escuela too, please. You only analize very great the voice and the form about singing with the context with your kind of happiness , honesty and detaching a good energy that you have. It can be seen in them. And finally,i want to say, some comments i read are wrong, its true that i think from the bottom of my heart ,you are so beautiful from the inside and of course the outside, really. Im from spain, so Sorry about my english, is not very good. Thank you. and never changes, be you always, no matther what. God bless you.

I really don’t like that, she can sing but it’s a horrible version of the song. I presume it’s featured in a TV show or film, and it probably works in that context, but as a stand alone song, for me it’s like fingernails down a blackboard.
