The first Sia one just had the backing track of the chorus way louder than her actual voice, so she was basically just "singing" (more like speaking) the low end.

So I don't understand 90% of what you're saying because I don't sing. What I take away from this is that people who shit on singers who don't play an instrument should shut up. Based what you've shared there are just as many things to learn when training your voice as there are when learning an instrument. The voice IS an instrument.
@katherinemorelle71156 жыл бұрын
Jenn Feeley it absolutely is an instrument- and it can be a lot more finicky than other instruments. Even just what you eat or drink can change your sound- I used to take a shot of port before performing, if I didn’t have enough warm up time 😁 But because it’s biology, it changes from hour to hour. Half of the talent of being a singer (imo) is learning how to work with whatever your voice is doing on that particular day. Some days my voice is huskier than others, and it’s better to lean in to a little more vibrato (those are the best days for singing the blues). Other days, my voice can be quite clear- and I’ll usually go in for some classical or traditional Gàidhlig folk. Obviously, I can change up what I sing because I’m no professional, but it just goes to show just how much your voice can change from day to day. I don’t know of any other instrument that’s as variable as the voice- wood or metal might change a little over time, but they don’t have those big day to day changes, because they aren’t biological. It’s why I think singing is the hardest instrument to play.
@darb68085 жыл бұрын
People who play and instrument and sing are worth more than people who just sing as musicians probably 7 times out of ten. If you are a singer who doesn't play an instrument, doesn't know any music theory, and/or cannot write more than a simple melody, then it's not much to brag about, because SO MANY MUSICIANS are WAY more impressive than that, that is, if they are more than just a singer. I agree that one shouldn't crap on just singers, but just singers are a menace to the musical scene. It's really hard to deal with a front man, especially if they think they are more important or impressive than they think they are. Because while I was taking time off of whatever I was doing to learn music and an instrument, they were singing every time they showered, and then BOOM! . . . Another singer . . . Just like the last one . . . To a band a singer is only worth more than a bass player, because singing is just less impressive than the guitar, or the keyboard, or the drums, and so many people do it.

Clearly.. I was a massive one direction fan and am now a massive harry styles solo fan. One direction was obviously very commercial, unlike harry as a solo artist. People tend to favour high notes over lower notes which is why I reckon in the one direction days they opted for the higher ones. Hence why people usually tend to think zayn is the best singer of the five. they falsely associate high notes with a better technique

Atoh I think a lot of the difference in some of these was the mics as well. They’re comparing headset mics to handheld. Bad recordings aren’t necessarily bad performances.
@Sasha-up9er6 жыл бұрын
Also comparing full concerts where the singer might have done a whole set already with dancing and singing and everything, they're probably exhausted and dehydrated and everything, compared to an acoustic, radio or small session where they're relaxing and probably are only singing a few songs at once and don't have to sing over a crowd.

She has vocal nodules since childhood. One of the reasons why Mariah doesn't tour as much for an artist of her caliber. Also her mom is a classically trained singer and has trained her mostof her life, and she also share the same coach with Celine Dion.
@Matt-hn4zc6 жыл бұрын
She also has nodules. They destroy your voice over time when you keep singing. And with her being a global star, her voice took a beating. 90s Mariah Carey had the best voice known to man. Sad to see it now.

At least as far as pop/modern music goes. There are legendary jazz and opera singers too, but there are very few if any modern singers that can compete in the same league as her at her peak.

I love watching your reactions to singers! I've had several different vocal teachers in the past, but you always have slightly different ways of putting things that make more sense to me (especially with the mixing thing which makes so much sense but ive never heard of before) and I wish I had discovered you and your website sooner! I hope you don't get too overwhelmed by all the Kpop fans asking for reactions and just continue reacting to things that make you happy or allow you to give insight to other's voices. Also the way you give criticism is so non-aggressive and helpful and I can tell that you're a great teacher that I would have loved to take from. I hope you meet lots of success!

Yeah I agree. But truth - Beyonce did it for "Single Ladies" and slayed. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2rcgpuVlN53erc 🎥 Beyonce - Single Ladies - 11.26.08 (Today Show) - KZbin But truth is, she's so good because she's even admitted her father "Joe Jackson"'d her when she was a kid and drilled her to sing while she was running so she learned to breathe and move and keep in key without getting winded. Also if you notice, unlike Katy, you don't see Beyonce doing a lot of extracurricular "performing" - i.e. talk shows, game shows etc. She's more focused on her craft and not talking and promoting her brand. She seems to save herself for the stage.

Thank you for stressing how hormonal changes and ageing actually changes a voice - people who shit on older female artists simply don't understand this, and it annoys me so much! You usually lose your higher registers as you age, it's NORMAL, and a voice can still sound beautiful, just a bit more simple, is all, no more crazy key changes etc. We need to stop glorifying youth and learn to appreciate older artists for what they can do.

DE Nichols I'll say this, I saw Wayne at the Flamingo in Vegas back in 2008, and he tried to sing the old songs, but it was clear his voice became a gravelly lower tone than from his youth. I was happy to see him, he is Mr Las Vegas. But it was all age, he never smoked or anything.
