This IS a studio recording so she is using the studio as her instrument. If she were singing outdoors a Shure 58 and different vocal production would be in order. If you want Pavarotti to sound good in a studio you close mic him with a U87 and have him sing down but outdoors a U87 won't work, a Shure 58 would. Two different animals, studio recording and live or concert recording, you should know this!

[11:43] it's totally natural to hear a voice with reverb. Every space sounds different. Reverb allows you to 'create' a space. It's still her. Unless you were in an anechoic chamber, you will never 'not' hear reverb. You might want to hear her sing in an 8'x10' concrete dorm room with no processing, but I sure don't, not on youtube, anyway.

And hats off to you wanting to point out that no one naturally sounds like this. Not to hate her, just to make other aspiring singers realize that this isn't how a human sounds in nature. You can critique her voice all you want. It's not just about the voice, it's about all around music and voice put together. My opinion she did a hell of a job regardless if she used Reverb or not. Her voice just makes you want to listen to more!! There's a lot of people that can sing. But to have that catchy voice that makes people want to listen more is what separates you from just another singer. Which sadly not every singer has.

Yeah there is no way that she singing that live. I saw an audition for one of the X Factor spin-offs in another country oh, and the lady that was auditioning was singing so perfectly and so easily that they thought she was lip-syncing. They had them turn off the music and had her do it a cappella, and she blew their mind. With that being said, you can still tell she was actually singing before they cut the music off. Breathing is one of the major factors in singing that is really hard to fake.

Everyone is freaking out but HE’S A VOICE TEACHER!!! So he’s not saying she’s a bad singer. But he works with the raw voice and the mechanics of that instrument. If the instrument has been modified & filtered by technology then he can’t add much. To me it’s like seeing a painting IRL. The strokes and how the paint blends. The texture up close. Versus, seeing a printed poster of that painting. You can still appreciate the colors and the beauty. But some people want to see all the original unfiltered raw details. Great review!! I'm glad you point out what processing sounds like. It's easy to be discouraged learning because nobody sounds like that naturally. Today it's normal to use lots of plugins like eq, compression, subtle and tasteful saturation, air and body tonality tweaking, delays, reverb, most likely some autotune (I.e at 10:02 to 10:03 you can hear autotune very noticeably) and or melodyne ++. Please don't get me wrong I love the voice and she's a great singer for her age. She will become truly magnificent over time for sure.

13:06 I studied music and singing and worked as a graphic designer at a recording studio. I had the privilege of watching and listening recordings of celebrity singers take place. Yes, I recognize her voice is being enhanced by reverb, but she has an amazing voice with or without reverb. Calling her voice “photoshopped” is not a fair characterization. It’s not the same to have Photoshop take off 100lbs to have Photoshop make lipstick a tiny touch glossier. The amount of “Photoshop” in this case is so minimal that it is negligible. To all the haters, record yourself with reverb and see if you can match this output. 😉 She is truly amazing with or without that touch of “makeup.”

There are many people who are very extremely unique in their own voice , which many of the standard voice teaching techniques don’t apply, Selena was one as well. Lanie in my opinion, along with millions of others have agreed. This performance to me and millions of others believe her version of this song is bars above the original. As you know, this industry is immensely a tough industry to get noticed, her uniqueness, in singing this song, including, her then persona and body language, is what brought her to this high level of notoriety. Looking at ways to improve on that performance, to me, is a tough task. It’s like don’t fix something that’s not broke. Remember, the scale of success in this industry, is the amount of the fan base, the person holds; fans equal sales.

I think she is really singing in the vid but the audio track was processed. Compression and reverb were added at minimum. That doesn't take anything away from her performance.
