This IS a studio recording so she is using the studio as her instrument. If she were singing outdoors a Shure 58 and different vocal production would be in order. If you want Pavarotti to sound good in a studio you close mic him with a U87 and have him sing down but outdoors a U87 won't work, a Shure 58 would. Two different animals, studio recording and live or concert recording, you should know this!

You can critique her voice all you want. It's not just about the voice, it's about all around music and voice put together. My opinion she did a hell of a job regardless if she used Reverb or not. Her voice just makes you want to listen to more!! There's a lot of people that can sing. But to have that catchy voice that makes people want to listen more is what separates you from just another singer. Which sadly not every singer has.

she's just lip syncing someone elses song though. She's not playing any of this music. Maybe, just maybe, she sang along, but then someone else made a computer program to sync her voice to the karaoke version of a popular old song.

And hats off to you wanting to point out that no one naturally sounds like this. Not to hate her, just to make other aspiring singers realize that this isn't how a human sounds in nature. Makes aspiring singers hate themselves less when working on their voice. It's a lot like models using filters and editing on social media. Just acknowledging so we don't beat ourselves up comparing.

[11:43] it's totally natural to hear a voice with reverb. Every space sounds different. Reverb allows you to 'create' a space. It's still her. Unless you were in an anechoic chamber, you will never 'not' hear reverb. You might want to hear her sing in an 8'x10' concrete dorm room with no processing, but I sure don't, not on youtube, anyway.

Everyone is freaking out but HE’S A VOICE TEACHER!!! So he’s not saying she’s a bad singer. But he works with the raw voice and the mechanics of that instrument. If the instrument has been modified & filtered by technology then he can’t add much. To me it’s like seeing a painting IRL. The strokes and how the paint blends. The texture up close. Versus, seeing a printed poster of that painting. You can still appreciate the colors and the beauty. But some people want to see all the original unfiltered raw details. Great review!! Like, DUH 😒!!!

Yeah there is no way that she singing that live. I saw an audition for one of the X Factor spin-offs in another country oh, and the lady that was auditioning was singing so perfectly and so easily that they thought she was lip-syncing. They had them turn off the music and had her do it a cappella, and she blew their mind. With that being said, you can still tell she was actually singing before they cut the music off. Breathing is one of the major factors in singing that is really hard to fake.

13:06 I studied music and singing and worked as a graphic designer at a recording studio. I had the privilege of watching and listening recordings of celebrity singers take place. Yes, I recognize her voice is being enhanced by reverb, but she has an amazing voice with or without reverb. Calling her voice “photoshopped” is not a fair characterization. It’s not the same to have Photoshop take off 100lbs to have Photoshop make lipstick a tiny touch glossier. The amount of “Photoshop” in this case is so minimal that it is negligible. To all the haters, record yourself with reverb and see if you can match this output. 😉 She is truly amazing with or without that touch of “makeup.”

There are many people who are very extremely unique in their own voice , which many of the standard voice teaching techniques don’t apply, Selena was one as well. Lanie in my opinion, along with millions of others have agreed. This performance to me and millions of others believe her version of this song is bars above the original. As you know, this industry is immensely a tough industry to get noticed, her uniqueness, in singing this song, including, her then persona and body language, is what brought her to this high level of notoriety. Looking at ways to improve on that performance, to me, is a tough task. It’s like don’t fix something that’s not broke. Remember, the scale of success in this industry, is the amount of the fan base, the person holds; fans equal sales.

please react to Wardruna + Aurora - Helvegen (pronounced “hell”-vay-gen) live! it’s incredible, words cannot describe. make sure it’s the one on Wardruna’s YT account :) Wardruna is a Norwegian band who likes to tie their sound and look back to Ancient Norse/Viking era and the poem/eulogy the singer preaches at the end of the performance is a VERY old poem (forgot the name) and it’s spoken in Old Norse :). They’re absolutely amazing. The lead singer who you would see singing with Aurora is named Einar!! edit: i will add,, the meaning of the song is about death and dying and remembering those who have passed. einar has said before that while he was writing the song, he knew that before (like a thousand years ago), we used to have songs for everything. people would sing their dying loved ones to the other side as they passed, and Einar thought: “who would sing to me? who would remember me when I go?” that’s basically the premise of the song, there are subtitles in the performance video :D

I'm glad you point out what processing sounds like. It's easy to be discouraged learning because nobody sounds like that naturally. Today it's normal to use lots of plugins like eq, compression, subtle and tasteful saturation, air and body tonality tweaking, delays, reverb, most likely some autotune (I.e at 10:02 to 10:03 you can hear autotune very noticeably) and or melodyne ++. Please don't get me wrong I love the voice and she's a great singer for her age. She will become truly magnificent over time for sure.

She does have an Acoustic Guitar version of the same song without all the "bedazzle" search "Lanie Gardner singing Dreams (Acoustic Guitar)"

I know he's not a traditional voice-y singer, but could you do REM/Michael Stipe doing Nightswimming live? Puh-lease? Love you so much. You are so kind and helpful.

I’m not a music person, I am a photographer. I can totally relate to the comparison of Photoshop part of what you said. She’s got another song out that I’d like to hear you critique. Great job!!!

And I also wish we could hear it unprocessed, because I tend to like hearing people's voices like that, it sounds better without all the extra, to me.

Sam, I love your videos, and I was thinking THE EXACT SAME THING when you talked about photoshopped bodies that we're led to believe are "human". I completely agree with you, it's important to know what's natural and what's not, not to say which is best, but to not be fooled. (I hope I'm making sense, English isn't my first language :) )

Agreed we live Society obsessed with perfection and unfortunately we have this distorted idea of what we want instead of embracing what we have.

I’m glad someone finally talked about the processing that’s going on during this recording. She has a great singing voice but it’s being altered with the tech.

I love how there are so many negative comments here from so many ignorant people. He’s a vocal coach. Practically every video is covering a non-studio, non-processed performance including performances from some of the best that have ever been. This isn’t a reaction channel

In terms of jaw tension, have you worked with singers who have chronic stress and/or TMJ in that area? I think I might have this and wonder how I can fix it

That muscle you refer to is called the Buccinator.. it comprises the majority of what we consider to be our cheeks, and is solely responsible for our ability to suck in and blow out air beyond the lungs and diaphragm.., hence being an integral player in the ability to sing.. as well as play wind instruments,. Unlike most other muscles in our body, it is remarkably adaptive, and in extreme cases can grow up to 10 times its normal size, without it, there would be no trumpet players)

I think she is really singing in the vid but the audio track was processed. Compression and reverb were added at minimum. That doesn't take anything away from her performance. It just gives it a more professional, processed sound. To those of you commenting on this saying she didn't use any extra effects. If you have never mixed or mastered audio you have no idea what you're talking about.

I would have never guessed that I'd catch a commercial, and, as I listen to you critique, a video that would cause a stronger than usual feeling of hopefulness about my life from this point forward. Long story...we all have one but more importantly, thank you so much for this great video. First time here... Liked and subscribed CHECK and CHECK ! Now, time to rewatch because I really wanna follow and hear what you said. I love learning and very much appreciate your style, thorough and pragmatic. Thank you.
