Sam is such a wonderful voice teacher. I've had good teachers before, but I feel like he is able to deeply empathize and connect with his stutents, understand their struggles, and find ways to make them progress in ways that are unique to each individual. It feels like every voice lesson with him is a breakthrough. Sam will teach you how to achieve a great sound quality, but also how to be vulnerable and send a powerful message when you perform. I couldn't recommend him more. Kindly, a person who never pursued music professionally, but who also never wanted to give up singing.

What a great breakdown! I am not a singer but somehow I know a great one when I hear them. So Hyang is my favorite of all. Without being a musician I vaguely recognized her vast abilities from the first time I heard her voice. She is as you said a virtuoso. What amazes me is how many different tools she has in her voice box. She can be soft, powerful, or dynamic, and the runs and flips both ascending and descending are exceptional. Within all of this are her supreme choices that she makes in her performances in using all she has in her repertoire. I don't know of any female singer I have heard that is so consistently flawless in live performances. To think except for some very key lessons from Seth Riggs, she has been mostly self-taught! It is mind boggling. When asked in an interview she just said her voice is a gift from God. But having said that she also said she practices a song a hundred times before a performance (partly due to nervousness). We just have to agree she is both very gifted and works her tail off! What a phenomenon! Thanks for the astute reaction.

Michael Bolton also said that Sohyang would give a performance of virtuoso skill. Also, her vocal teacher Seth Riggs said, 'Sohyang is the only Asian who can overcome the barriers of the American music market.' Oprah Winfrey was fascinated by Sohyang's I Have Nothing performance and showed the video of the performance to David Foster. David fell deeply in love with her song, and he sent many love calls to Sohyang.
@ToddSauve
@ToddSauve 5 ай бұрын
@@user-fdh4jh4j421 Well, David Foster is a married man and Sohyang is a married woman, but I have no doubt he fell pretty hard for Sohyang and her great beauty, inside and out, but I seriously doubt he let it get out of hand. Foster originally arranged for a concert with Sohyang in Vancouver, BC, not far from his home town of Victoria. But Sohyang had to cancel out. She didn't elaborate why in the article interviewing her, but likely it was another bout of pneumonia. Poor woman! So Foster arranged for her to join him for eight concerts in Tokyo for the 30th anniversary of their Blue Note Club, from late November to early December 2018. Foster says she is one of the top divas he's come across, and don't we all know it?

@@ToddSauve She has been attending overseas missionary concerts and volunteer work for over 10 years since she was young, and has gained much more recognition and popularity in the CCM industry than in the pop music industry, and still is. In addition to David, she received offers from many famous musicians and large entertainment companies, but due to her health issues and her beliefs, she politely turned down many love calls. If she becomes heavily entangled with someone through a contract... it will be difficult to keep her beliefs. She is an only child, and her parents divorced when she was in high school. She said that because she did not have bus fare to go to school, she walked long distances alone, listening to songs and singing along. And as soon as she entered her 20s, she developed cancer. She also contracted pneumonia eight times after that. She remembers her pain and suffering. However, she overcame all those hardships with the help of those around her and her faith, and she wants to keep that grateful heart and sing songs of comfort for those who are also going through hardships.
@user-fdh4jh4j421
@user-fdh4jh4j421 5 ай бұрын
@@ToddSauve Another unique feature is that Sohyang was invited to David's concert held overseas, rather than David's concert held in Korea. (Asian singers are usually only invited to David's concerts held in their countries, and even those are invited by David, so the singers are very happy about the invitation). And the fact that David, the original composer of I Have Nothing, asked Sohyang to sing the arranged version of Sohyang's song, I Have Nothing, shows how much David loved Sohyang's song.

Yup Sam, what advice about singing can _anyone_ give to Sohyang? She is the brightest star in the singing universe. She said in an interview a couple months ago that the _only_ formal instruction on singing that she has _ever_ had in her entire life was five sessions with Seth Riggs around 2010. Everything else she taught herself. We all give up. Sohyang _is_ an alien. 👀👽🛸

Every great singer has continued to have a coach or teacher they can refer back to. (not unlike a pro athlete who continues to use a coach) Saying they have never used a coach is not a great thing. Joan Baez claimed she ruined her own voice by refusing to use a teacher until she was 40 years old. I've heard SoHyang sound not so great on occasions . it could have been a poor recording, or maybe it could have been her. And a side note directed to not only you, but others also. Making her health situation an excuse is not a great look. To go back to sports , there is a saying "If you're injured, you don't play. If you play, you aren't injured"
@ToddSauve
@ToddSauve 3 ай бұрын
@@stevenmeyer9674 The proof is in the pudding Steven. Though Sohyang's endurance is decreasing with age, as it does with literally every human being, she sings just as well today as she did ten years ago. Everyone has an off day because we are not machines, and there are a lot of cell phone videos out there which are not to be used as an indicator of anything really due to their inherent low quality audio. And Sohyang was recovering from pneumonia when she sang "You Raise Me Up" in 2018, which was an astounding performance by anyone's metric. To be able to sing like Sohyang and only ever have five sessions with a top flight voice teacher like Seth Riggs speaks for itself. She will be 46 in about a month. I personally just don't see the relevance of any of your criticisms. 🤷‍♂

@@damzon2409 I admit that many great singers are from the Philippines. Among Filipino singers, the best in my opinion are Lea Salonga and Regine Velazquez. They are excellent singers with distinct singing styles and each with their own individuality. I am not denying this fact, but I am saying that there are also other great singers out there besides them. Sohyang has received contracts and joint performance offers(including compliments) from numerous world-class musicians and record labels, including Seth Riggs, David Foster, Michael Bolton, former manager of Whitney Houston, Boyz II Men producer, Josh Groban, Kirk Franklin, Sony Music USA, etc. . Sohyang has already been recognized worldwide for her vocal skills. She received so many offers not only because of her vocal skills, but also because she has a charm that can move the hearts of people around the world. It was only her choice that she did not go out into the world like other divas. It's because of her health and her beliefs, not because she lacks skill. I've seen so many fans of Morissette Amon point out Sohyang's vocal technique and claim that there are many people in the Philippines who sing like Sohyang. Does this make sense? When people around the world see Filipinos making these claims, what will they think of the Philippines? Only their singers are the best, and singers from other countries are the worst? I am a person who had no feelings towards the Philippines, but started hating the Philippines after seeing Morissette Amon's fans.

She is the best female vocalist in this world. Michael Bolton had a concert in Korea 2023, and she sang "Oh Holy Night" there, which was so powerful. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnS1hWSnp7OXf6c Another is "Upon this Rock," which she sang at the concert. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2rKhJxprtBpnZI The next is "One Million Roses" which was performed on a TV show. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJ3ahJihoJd0fpI And she sang 'Part of your world', the OST of The Little Mermaid, on a TV show. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZCTfZibop2Im7M And recently, she performed a song 'Higher' that she made. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZeTaZSrl9F-iqcsi=ChvPdY_DNqeF7ryH The last is "Easy on me" This is her busking performance. She is a superstar, but she sings on both big and small stages. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qanEh2VniM5jqZI

well, you are entitled to your opinion but i couldnt disagree more. Her upper register is awesome but that's it. Other singers shine in many more ways. And even go higher if that is what you focus on.

I remember doing online karaoke once and I was complaining that singing Avenue Q was going to murder my voice and then somebody says, “didn’t you sing gethsemene earlier?” and I don’t know what to tell you. If that high note’s in your range, you’re on good form and you know how to approach it you can why for days with no problem but I’ve never learnt to Cookie Monster sustainably

It’s not really something you can do science on but I think there may be an element of having to grow up in the right environment. Had she grown up in Korea 75 years ago she would not have been listening to muisc that works like this and if she then heard the supremes and aretha as an adult she probably would have sounded good singing along but not that next level

I think people generally tend to kind of over value people that can sing high notes well. As if singing was a race, and the point of it was to reach one specific end goal. But singing is art, and art is diverse and not easily comparable. You can get better at art, but your art is never going to be exactly like someone else's, and that's a feature, not a flaw.

She is very good technically, but her lows and mid belts are kind of lackluster, not much core. More importantly, I don't find her tone to be pleasant at all. Bit too shrill and thin for my taste. I admire her skills and dedication to her craft though.

Firstly, her tone isn't thin. You can't get a much fuller tone than what she's doing up there without straight up screaming. Think of others who consistently go up in that range. Ariana, Amber Riley etc. Sohyang's upper belts definitely sound fuller in timbre. If you take people who go "chestier" up there, like Jennifer Hudson, Demi etc, they just sound over-pressed and yelly. Secondly, her lows...whatever, that conversation is redundant, but i will keep repeating that she has shown resonance down to F#3/G3 when going at it with full-chest/thick vocal folds (listen to I Believe I Can Fly). However, her midbelts are not lackluster because of underdevelopment, they're often light and twangy because her approach there is light and twangy. I don't like it either, but she has shown many times that she's able to achieve both immense "resonance" in that range, and also robust chest participation with thick cord closure. She just doesn't do it often, I'm not sure why. But if i had to guess, I'd say she prefers the sweeter/softer/lighter sound of the mixy approach, which she also maintains down to her lows. There's a reason why sometimes she's gone on Bb3s and others she resonates F#3s, and it's that mixy approach.
