When you said the body likes the feeling of tension/will hold onto that- i relate so much! When i started singing i had a lot of jaw/tongue tension which limited the sounds i could make. I was definitely using that tension as a way to “control” an untrained voice by quite literally pushing to make the sounds i wanted. It took a long time to teach my body to sing in a more relaxed way. I’m an overall tense person, so I think consciously relaxing my body before i sing is something that i’ll always have to do.

I feel that! I'm a naturally tense person as well! I always get tense in my shoulders and clench my jaw. Whenever I warm up, I always focus on keeping the shoulders dropped and not involved as much and focus on doing jaw relaxation exercises as well as warming up while practicing keeping the jaw dropped or relaxed. If I don't warm up and try to sing with my full capacity, I start reaaaally pulling chest voice up and it makes it super hard to sing for a sustained period of time. Jaw relaxation REALLY helps make it so much easier for me

I love that you touched on instrumentalist brain vs. vocalist brain. I was a vocal major in undergrad but I teach elementary chorus and band. My kids in both ensembles are definitely more well rounded and have an easier time with rhythm (and being in band and chorus in school helped set me up for success in my profession too). I have an easier time belting when I'm playing piano because it helps me focus less on my technique(I have a tendency to overthink when belting because it's out of my comfort zone). Also...is Tori even human? She makes it sound so easy! 😆

I know I’m a little late to this video but I just wanted to say, your videos alone have taught me so much. I have never sung professionally and only had vocal training once, after a nasty bought of laryngitis (stress/shouting from a job where I had to raise my voice all day long - think theme park) and had my voice almost completely gone for nearly 9 months and when it did come back, my voice reduced to a squeak whenever I got stressed or tried to raise my voice above a low whisper. Only had 6 lessons but I honestly didn’t realise how much of an art vocal training is. It clearly is your vocation. Your vocal training is always fully booked (and rightly so) whenever I check back but I just wanted you to know, I have sung frequently since I was a child and your techniques have made my singing so much better. I feel uplifted when I watch your videos. Your energy alone could lift a million clouds from my day. And I hope the people who manage to get lessons with you, realise how lucky they are. Your presence on KZbin is a blessing. Your good energy shines through and I know all your subscribers feel that. Thank you for all you do.

The first time I became aware of Tori Kelly was her Nationwide commercials. I was in another room the first time and about broke my neck to get out there before it was over. My first thought was OMG! I thought it was a commercial with Brad Paisley because of the guitar playing so that took me by surprise. The ease with which she sang and played even in that short spot was, to me, impressive. The next time I heard her was her work on the animated movie Sing. The last song had me soaring. I love how she handles a song. I also don't have to worry about her 'making it'. She has way too much talent to slip through the cracks.

You responded and said it was what you badly needed on a down day and you felt like moving forward again. Isn't it the most thrilling thing in the world to be a teacher that gets to see greatness in someone who is temporarily blinded to their own brilliance?
