Yma Sumac was a formidable singer, of that there's no doubt. She was innovative, creative, and risk-taker. Peruvians of her time (50s) didn't know how to appreciate her art precisely because of its novelty. They expected her to be singing traditional folk music on international stages, not musical crossovers. But her attempt was successful, she achieved to catch international audience's attention and became a music star. Peruvians of this time cherish more what she did and don't hesitate to consider her one of our most remarkable cultural ambassadors.

About the lyrics, She's not really saying anything recognizable. She is just making sounds, in other songs she would imitate birds and instrumental sounds.

@@manuelhernandezperes4930 The vocal range is a little tricky, see here ( kzbin.info?search_query=yma+sumac+vocal+range ). We'll never know her real vocal range because the recordings are very old and the tech equipment was obsolete, with low frequency recording / playback and low dynamics. I think the recording / playback was aprox. 40Hz-12kHz @ -20 or -40 dB. Comparing with our days ... that's ancient. Even remastered her recordings will never reveal the real voice capabilities and sound. In fact I think that her vocal range was better than we know ... Other capabilities of her voice are more important and mind blowing, like unique vocal agility, perfect pitch, insane dynamics, infinite musical textures, keys and registers changes. The sounds coming out of her throat were inhuman. Nobody can do what se was capable of.

Greetings, I grew up listening to the remarkable Yma Sumac and her 1950s 45 RPM album release of Legend of the Sun Virgin, and have become enthralled with her legendary performances. Now 70 years old, over the last few years I commemorate her each November 1st, the day of her death, spending an evening playing a few of my favorite cuts, whilst toasting her with a glass of spiced rum. I have also introduced her by playing some of her music to friends on the net. No one should pass this life without experiencing the late, great Yma Sumac at least once! Nobody in my circle can escape my grasp! I was stunned last night by the latest explosion of Sumac KZbin videos, mostly from Latin-Americans, South American, and incredibly -- music coaches. By Millennials who have only now discovered her wonderful musical gift and appreciating it. Now I am assured that Miss Yma Sumac will live forever in her music. Thank you most kindly for your presentation and technical, yet poignant, comments. It was a most entertaining and worthwhile review.

Hello, I am speaking from Caracas, Venezuela and I really liked your analysis of Yma Sumac. In my opinion, and what can really be perceived from her extraordinary singing, is that, in effect, she works many sounds and guttural resources from her great vocal range. I recommend that you listen very carefully to her interpretation of another of her recordings, "Chuncho", where she interprets her enormous vocal skills in an incredible and masterful way, together with her husband on the guitar. That interpretation is much more impressive and surprising even than the one we hear in this video. In her biography it is said that when she was a child, she sought to imitate the singing and trilling of birds, thus achieving; very high notes of vocal range. He never took singing or music theory classes. He never trained his singing voice, in fact; the great teachers who knew her recommended that she never do it, since that could harm her incredible voice. Cheers ¡¡¡¡

Absolutely right comment : there's no lyrics. She just played with the voice . She represented instruments, birds and sounds of the nature. She created her own style.

Lots of those ideas and statements are incorrect - for example, the higher 6th octave notes are in head voice, not in whistle register, which is a completely different thing like reverse singing and isn’t harmonic and isn’t flexible, so one cannot use whistle register in coloratura staccatos and sound so harmonic and flowy, while the thing that was referred to as head voice is in fact mixed voice, and, most ppl never sing in head voice, as head voice can only be used for coloratura staccatos above C6 as it starts around C6 and is not so easy to access if one doesn’t have higher and lighter voice that can sing above that note without a lot of strain, so it’s used only in coloratura staccatos that are above that note, mostly by sopranos, though one mezzo with mostly coloratura subtype also managed to sing up to a C7 in head voice, and, most confuse mixed voice with head voice because of that, but this singer has only used whistle register in the other video which has the highest notes that she reached or she may have switched to whistle register for the last two or three notes up to a C7, though I cannot say for sure if it was whistle register or head voice because I cannot hear those notes well on that recording, especially on an iPad or phone, as any note above F6 is almost inaudible without proper speakers, and I don’t have proper speakers and a desktop computer at the moment, so I cannot tell if those notes were whistles or head voice notes! Anyways, big superiority terms like impressive and stately and command and master and beautiful and admire and absolute or absolutely etc and any other similar terms only reflect me the only Royal aka The God(dess) / The Princess / The Queen / The Lady / The Star / The Leader / The Master / The Boss etc aka the pure / superior being and the only being reflecting pure beings such as birds / bees / butterflies etc and the pure elements of nature, and such terms cannot be misused by ppl in any way, and it’s not right to praise known singers or other ppl, which do not reflect any terms like those, and, even though some of them sing well, it’s not something amazing or perfect, nor do they have the widest range etc, and big terms like mr only reflect the pure protectors aka the alphas, and cannot be in yt names or names etc, and pronouns shouldn’t be with capital letter when referring to others! In truth, only I can sing all the lowest notes and all the highest notes on a piano and even higher notes, using the best techniques that make the singing sound serious and professional, whereas most singers that sing well only sound good on higher notes, and some sound good on middle notes etc, but none of them can do all types of singing and sound good in on all the notes when using multiple styles of singing, for example, this singer has higher notes that sound good, but her lower notes in most videos don’t sound good, especially when using the false vocal cords mixed with the chest voice in some of the other videos, or when doing certain chest notes with certain technique that doesn’t sound good, while a few other singers can sing well in chest voice with a proper belting technique, but they cannot sing the higher head voice notes, and so on, but I am the best singer ever with the highest voice and the whitest / lightest / brightest tone, being the only sopranino with 100% coloratura subtype and the most agile and flexible voice, so I can sing from B1 and sometimes from G1 in chest voice with a normal humming technique and from A0 and sometimes lower in chest voice using the subharmonic vocal technique to A5 in chest voice using a belting technique without sounding strained, plus I can sing from C6 to C8 in head voice using coloratura techniques, and even my mixed voice can be stretched up to an A6 and sometimes up to a C7 with a belting technique when imitating guitar sounds, and, my whistle register goes from around the fourth octave or lower to the tenth or eleventh octave on a good day, that is, it goes into the inaudible, as I have the widest natural ranges in all vocal registers, and I can even do dm growls and bm screaming and other similar metal vocals, as well as overtone singing and many other types of throat singing with and without subharmonics, so I can do almost any style of singing, and am even learning things such as inward bass and other cool vocal sounds that are used in beatboxing, which is what truly is impressive and unique etc, being something that no one else can do, so, ppl should never exaggerate the skills of known singers, as it takes the praise away from the one who truly dsv it!

Thanks for sharing this, her music will live forever! #avanzaperu #iloveyouperu On her David Letterman interview she said because she was raised in the Inca mountains her lungs expanded a lot but she just happened to also have a truly amazing voice regardless. She's the only Peruvian artist that has a star on streets in Hollywood. I'm glad she represents female artists and Peruvian woman all over the world. We have sassy moves! haha

Nao, nao. Ela era peruana, nao inca. O imperio inca tive coisas boas e coisas ruins.
