@mediamannaman

@@necieboo7766 I started with an Audio Technical AT2020 USB mic for about $120 I think. I recorded in my office with a few heavy blankets draped over furniture. It was good enough for my first two books on ACX which were royalty share only. Then I bought a new mic and built a booth out of PVC pipes and heavy blankets that are made for absorbing sound. I agree with those who say clothes closets are the best place to start because they absorb sound so well and are usually small with no windows. I’ll tell you that the treated environment is more important than the mic. My old, cheap AT2020 USB mic sounds GREAT when I record from inside my booth!

This is INCREDIBLY helpful and INCREDIBLY overwhelming. I chuckle because on another platform, people tout the 'ease of having a side gig by recording books' - and there is A L O T of information to ingest/learn/navigate! Not as easy as read/save/submit. I'm leaning into this learning curve - voice-over/audiobooks have been a dream of mine... Can you share (and if you have, I'm new here) the baby steps you took? How did you even begin this journey? I look forward to hearing back. HUGS - Kimberly

Wow- this is a lot of work to record and edit. Your voice is so soothing sounding. If it’s a long book, this would take many hours to complete a project. I have most of the equipment and even the software to get started (due to being an Indie Musician). My concern is living in an Apartment in Phoenix, there’s so much noise. I am a great reader with a pleasant voice so I think I could do this. I am just concerned I would do so much time consuming work with little compensation. Also- aren’t there more voice over artists compared to jobs? I assume it’s very competitive to get work through ACX.

It is alot of work, but it's a passion. I also love in a similar situation and have to just take a pause while recording of there's noise. Some record early in the morning or late at night in these situations to ensure a bit of quiet. All voices and perspectives are unique, so it's not really completion, its a wide selection. There are lots of narrators on ACX, but a good portion of people never stuck with it. I'd say, if this is your passion, go for it.

You are only allowed up to a 5 second pause in an audiobook, so this is not possible. Audiobook retail pricing is based on the length of the book, so they are trying to get a larger price point. If they would like a longer book, they will need to write more words, it cannot be done with pauses.

I have a question. When you have an audition that has multiple characters--some both male and female--how do you do this? I'm not sure if I'm suppose to fake the opposite gender voice or just do the voice of the main and then when it gets to another character, I just speak in my voice not trying to give that character a voice. What are we suppose to do?
@VoiceOverAngela
@VoiceOverAngela 11 ай бұрын
The different voices can have subtle differences, is not so much about pitch. It's about attitude and attributes. Maybe the speak faster, more articulate, maybe a lisp, maybe an accent. Listen to audiobooks with character voices and really pay attention. I always recommend "Jurassic Park" narrated by Scott Brick as an example of subtle character voices.
@calripplebear1293
@calripplebear1293 11 ай бұрын
@@VoiceOverAngela I think maybe I worded my question wrong. What I'm trying to ask is--am I suppose to give a distinct voice to each character in their stories? Is that what you do? Sorry, I don't have free access to any material like this and I am literally broke right now trying to survive.

@@calripplebear1293 Im with you, if you are giving different voices to characters, which you and the RH will decide together, is not so much about pitch. It's more about attitudes and attributes. I've seen other VOAs say that doing copywritten material/slogans for national brands on a vo demo is legal and legit, since it is only a sample of your voice, and not something you are actually selling. However, I'm aware that this is simply their experience so far, and likely not based in legal fact. Do you have any definitive law-based reason for going to public domain texts for your reads? Seems like running a few lines from popular books in your fav categories might be better to do if were in deed no legal ramifications.
@VoiceOverAngela
@VoiceOverAngela 10 ай бұрын
ACX themselves say you can use a book off of your personal shelf for a sample. To your point, you're not selling it, or claiming you wrote it. But, I am extra cautious with stepping on toes when it comes to copyright infringement, so I used books on the public domain when I had nothing else for samples. You can use auditions as samples as well.

So basically I feel like this video missed a step. Do I need a mic like what you have? Do u have to pay for the adobe app? Can I use my phone? Or is that a bad idea.
@VoiceOverAngela

Great question! There are soooo many variables to voice over and audiobooks, my videos are broken into micro topics. I have many others that address your questions, but yes, you do need an external microphone, you do need a DAW to record and edit and format your files. I would not recommend using your phone to record audiobooks. There is alot of misleading information out there, do your own research and figure out what works best for you. :)

Hi Angela, great info, it's very useful. But I have a specific question about where to get samples to record if you don't have any. Guttenberg is great for public domain stuff but there's not a lot of variety of genres outside of fiction. Maybe things from the 1800's and early 1900's. I want to showcase more recent genres such as self-help, technology, modern business, etc. Basically things that are more current. The reads for the older books wouldn't translate well with today's type of variety. Can you just grab a book much like a commercial and use that under fair use, just for demos?

Hi Mark, thanks for watching! I totally understand your point, and you're right. However, I am not one to encourage others to infringe on a copyright. I would imagine an author wouldn't mind, but you just never know....

@@VoiceOverAngela I appreciate your reply and wasn't trying to imply any copyright issues. Just trying to get your insight as to how to overcome the challenge of finding "more modern" content to use in a demo, especially if fiction isn't where you want to focus your work on. Any insight as to how to do this? Much appreciated!

@@markv00 oh yes, it's a Grey area and I'm not entirely sure to be honest. While you'd think an author wouldn't mind if you used a small slice of their work, you just never know. I know some who have just used a book off their shelf for material, and some who strictly use books in the public domain. I for one am one who does not want to ruffle any feathers....

@@VoiceOverAngela if we have an author friend that is willing to let you use a snippet of their book for this...that would be ok to do? or if you are an author yourself, you can use your own book?? just to give an sample that is more modern and more in the genre and style you'd like to narrate?

@@nettie0376 Hello Janete and Angela. As long as you are NOT selling or making money FROM THE DEMO, and you are not bad mouthing the original content creator, you will be ok. You will not be violating any copyright laws by using snippets of current material so long is it is solely for demonstration (ie., Demo) use.
