I've watched a bunch of reaction videos for this VoicePlay cover, and no one has yet commented on AleXa's high, almost angelic, sound as Geoff goes high since everyone is too stunned by Geoff. Listen again to Geoff's part and at about the 1:50 mark (of the original video) you hear AleXa come in and go above him. Took me like 6-7 listens to the song before it even registered that there was something happening above Geoff's high notes.

Layne is making lion noises in this. Either that or they brought in a lion. I imagine it is Geoff going up there, but can't be sure, He is capable of it. AleXa sent them the choreography from where she was filmed in South Korea, by phone. It was great fun watching them trying to get it right. :) I have asked to see Cesar doing some dancing, as he is very capable of it, but so far - not really. Apparently AleXa approached them wanting to appear with them and this is the result. That look is amazing because they were filmed seperately on green screens, and put together in edit. :)

1) Congrats on the 50K!! That’s awesome!! 2) Geoff said in live chat that he wished there were a Picardy Third at the end. I love the way it currently ends, but I always hear that in my head as well-it would have sounded great! 3) You did a whole lot better talking about this during a first watch than I would’ve. I was all 😳🤯😵💫 “buh…” for a bit. SO much going on. 4) I’ve been a little frustrated when it comes to Cesar. We haven’t really gotten more than a short phrase or two of him singing full voice or belting, we’re only starting to get a clue as to his range (and I have NO idea what the low end is, although there’ve been a few moments in harmonies when I think he’s getting pretty low in his baritone range). I just keep feeling like we’re only scratching the surface with him. That said, on the Voiceplay Minis channel (there’s one of those!) there are some where he takes the lead-Patsy Cline’s Crazy is one, and that guy can really slay a torch song (a bit more full voice there as well, but I still feel like he’s holding back a bit)! Well worth checking out. Great reaction as always, Jennifer!! Congrats again on the 50k!! Do you ever do live events? If so I’ve missed them.

You're correct in that it is Layne make that disturbing-sounding low note (I couldn't think of a better adjective). He's using a technique called ingress singing; meaning he's actually singing that note while inhaling as opposed to exhaling. It's a technique used by a lot of beatboxers to get arguably some of the lowest notes ever produced by a human voice. It's rather difficult to be able to do it the way Layne is in this cover, but if you want an idea on how to get started - think snorting like a pig.

Love the analysis, hope you will do more voiceplay content as they come! By the way at 13:50-ish when you talk about the drop in Geoff's voice, that was actually chest and not subharmonics. Geoff can bring the timbres fairly close and really hard to distinguish, but if the tone sounds darkened, it is chest. On the other hand, if you can distinctly hear the pops and sounds kinda artificial then it's subs. His chest tone below A1 is (almost) always really dark and.. "meaty", for lack of a better word. a good example would be listening to the difference between his f#1 when he sings the first "enemy", which is a sub and the second one, which is chest. Side by side, there is a stark distinction in tone quality, since you cannot really darken the tone when using subs.

At 13:25, about that F#1… Geoff doesn’t normally use subharmonics unless he has to, and F#1 is his (current) lowest reliable chest note, so I’d bet that’s what he’s doing there.

It's interesting -- I didn't really like it that much on first listen (not familiar with the song at all), but I've come to love it. It's better than the original, in my opinion. Congratulations on the 50K!

What layne is doing is a superbass technique called vibrobass, it’s similar to subharmonics but is used a lot more by beatboxers than by basses

0 seconds ago Geoff Castellucci released a new video yesterday morning. The Rains of Castamere from Game to Thrones. He portrays the Lannister men. His best by far.
