@@5foot2eyesofblue13, Geoff is a true bass, if he wants to admit it or not. Peter Barber actually called him out on that during their interview. He just happens to have a large range. In reality, his range isn't that unusual; the largest ranges in the world are possessed by bass singers. Tim Storms has both the world record for lowest note produced by a human and the largest vocal range of a human at 12 octaves.

VoicePlay are beyond talented. Not only are they fantastically skilled vocalists, but that video you were praising? 100% their work, as this group is 100% independent. Sure, they had a steadycam operator and a couple hands on set, but it was filmed in the video production studio co-owned by Layne Stein (the vocal percussionist). Geoff Castellucci, the bass vocalist, was the one who created the arrangement. Eli (rhymes with 'jelly') Jacobson, the bald rock tenor, generally provides all the lighting design. And VoicePlay's production manager is Kathy Castellucci, Geoff's wife. Pretty much the onliy things they sub out are the occasional camera operator (because you can't take the shot and also be in the shot), any extensive makeup or prosthetics (yes, they employ both on occasion), and the final audio mix of the track. Everything else is all their work, from conception to editing the video. One things I wish more reactors got to see are the Behind the Scenes videos VoicePlay make for each video they produce. That's content that is rightly exclusive to their Patreon, but it would be nice if more people could see just how hard these guys work on every single production they give us for free.

@@setonhillstudios I forgot to mention that Geoff and Layne split the arrangements about 50/50, generally taking turns. Eli has provided a few arrangements as well. These guys have been grinding since 1997 (Geoff and Layne are the last two OG members), and if you start looking back through their videos you'll see this reflected in their changes in lineup through the years. But they regularly turn out top tier content, with far less acclaim than groups like PTX and Home Free. Both of them are skilled, but neither of them exhibit the versatiliy and creativity of this group. And that's all without getting into their prodigious vocal talents!! (FWIW, you can always find credits and attributions in their video notes; VoicePlay are very good at giving credit where it's due.)

The feature artist, J None, is a former member who left to join the navy as a vocalist during the pandemic times. He's a frequent feature nowadays, scheduled to fit his leave time. Cesar (next to the vocal percussionist) is the newest member and he's a vocal chameleon who's full of charisma. There's something special about VoicePlay arrangements that pays such homage to the original yet has their own touch.

Yep. Geoff goes from a low: A0 growl, B0 subharmonic, F1 full chest, B4 sometimes head mix, Bb5 falsetto top note. Eli started the singing and he has a voice for metal. J None was a member of VoicePlay until the US Navy recruited him for a 5 yr stint in their Navy Chorus which is now nearly 3 yrs done. They promoted him to bass instead of baritone and transferred him from Seattle to Washington DC where their premiere chorus is. It also is easier for him to get to Orlando for a couple of days for a video. Cesar, between Eli and Layne the beatboxer, is the newest member (2+ yrs now). Nickname is Velvet Sass. See him highlighted in We're Good or I Can't Make You Love Me. Layne started out as the baritone in high school and in 22 yrs (Scott Porter the beatboxer left for an acting career (See him in the Halo theme)) and Layne took over the beatboxing. He started playing the violin at 4, but has only played it in 3 of VoicePlay's videos in the last 27 years - Warriors, this one, and The Lion Sleeps Tonight. Chicago heard that VoicePlay had done a cover of this, checked it out, contacted them to see if they would be in their Chicago and Friends concert held Nov 17-18, 2023. The staging crew asked the nearest VP member where they wanted the drums. He pointed to Layne - he's the drums. Layne has a couple of nicknames - Carrot Lord (he tortures J None with those carrots) and VioLayne. Geoff is also known by Dragon Breath and also Foghorn. Eli as the Rock God. If you want to find out a lot about the members and those that sing with VoicePlay - check out Just Sing which was done while covid had everything shut down, nearly 4 yrs ago. It was done via Zoom so everyone was safe. Make sure you turn on the captions so you will know who those people are and what is their claim to fame.

The rule in a capella is, if there is anything not produced by the voice/ body, it is in plain view. And the addition of an instrument is typically as an additional voice in the mix. Low note is an E1. Same note as lowest on a four string bass.

Let me introduce them to you. Far left, Geoff, the Dragon Singer. 5 octave rage, I mean range! Next is JNone. He was a regular lineup player, but he sold his soul (voice) to the Navy! He visits when he can at the present. In the middle is Eli, please pronounce L-E. He is the Rock God of the group. By Eli is Cesar, who is our present Angel of Music. His purr of a voice can charm the birds out of the bushes, or is that the chicks out of their... Excuse the wandering mind. Lastly, (not really) is Layne, the beatboxer, and his alter ego, VioLayne. Yes, they are multi tracked but the boys can do a bunch of it live. like, more than one can sing the bass line, or beatbox. Plus, they can do alternate voices too.

JNone is also known as Mr Smooth amongst VP fans! Eli (bald chap) is the Rock God. There are too many superlatives for Geoff and Layne (aka VioLayne 😉) to mention here. Cesar, the latest/youngest member has a fantastic, soulful voice and brings "the feels" plus a whole lot of fun too. VP is insanely talented - and fully independent - so they do what they feel like doing. When they do covers they usually bring their own twist to it but give the original the respect it deserves. Geoff did this arrangement (they take turns) - Eli did they lighting. This is my personal VP favourite, but they never disappoint - regardless of what genre they cover! Enjoy the journey! 🌹🕊

Geoff does have his own channel of low bass covers, but he does use his range of virtually five octave - that includes some subharmonics and tenor but those are highlights, you might say, VoicePlay have a big catalogue now and their range of genres is huge. They are all great singers, even Layne the beatboxer, he does sometimes sing when the song doesn't require percussion. The image in this one is a homage to the song which was on the Black Album. I've watched enough videos now comparing voices auto-tunes and natural voices, and the emotion in these voices tells me there is little or no pitch correction going on. They do sing as well live, though of course there is some post production. J.None joined the US navy music section in 2021 and sings bass with them. He still comes back when on leave though, to sing with his old friends again.

@@johndeeregreen4592 I know it's the norm today and it's usually recording companies who insist on it, but I also know that I can't hear any here. And I can hear the difference. Especially as very occasionally Geoff can sound a bit pitchy. That wouldn't be the case if it was pitch corrected. Try watching some of the videos made by Fil of Wings of Pegasus, and you'll hear what I mean about hearing the difference.
@johndeeregreen4592
@johndeeregreen4592 5 ай бұрын
@@christinestromberg4057, Geoff's basslines cannot really have pitch correction added. Anything below about an A2 cannot really be pitch corrected and sound right. Trust me, I have tried it to hear what it sounds like... it's not good. This is a MAJOR testament to Geoff's accuracy, since, no, his lower parts aren't pitch corrected.

Great reaction, thanks! Sometimes with VoicePlay all anyone can say is "wow." It takes time to digest - even when you know them well. They keep changing and adding impossible things to their sound... and the arrangements keep getting better too. No one has mentioned Layne Stein yet, so I will. Layne is the beatboxer, violinist (we call him VioLayne) and baritone. He can and does do dead-on imitations of drums, hi-hats, snares, castanets, etc etc. But he does a whole range of other sounds too, just to punctuate or provide sound effects. The strange loud belch sound while he was playing violin was one of his. He was ready to do it while playing, but the group didn't like the look and voted to multi-track that sound. To date, he's done about 50% of all of their arrangements/videos.
