Layne's percussion in this one was really on point. Super-crisp, and that sort of "zzzzzzzzp" (whatever you want to call it) just really added to the performance.

I grew up with my grandpa who sings subharmonic bass so I hear it every time I go to his house and the few people who have hear me sing say I sing at a low baritone and go all the way up to a tenor.....whatever that means lol but if you haven't yet Geoff Castelluci (ya know the bass singer) has his own channel you should start with his cover of Sixteen Tons you can really get a feeling for exactly what his range is there 🙂

First off, I have to disclaim that all harmonizing parts are super vital to any arrangement. Every single one of the vocalists are absolutely amazing at their unique roles within all of their arrangements. Buuuuut....buuuuttt....Geoffrey's part is the glue to it all. Between Lane's amazing beatbox skills and the other vocal parts, Geoffrey's part is the piece that glues it all together and keeps it driving. Even beyond his amazing solos and subharmonics. I love them all and everything they bring to the group.....so much so that I quite literally watch the main video and then all the reaction videos lol.

A couple of songs from the Sing-Off (Play That Funky Music) and the Sing-Off Tour (Road Trip - hysterical) - both great and live! He's extended his low range this year In Enemy he hits an A0, lowest note on a piano. Geoff's solo of Elvis' Way Down is way good and his lowest note is C0. Geoff's wife Kathy usually does the production for the solos, but in this case, the camera isn't static so Layne was manning that and Eli was taking care of the changing lighting. Kathy did toss a mop to Geoff in one scene where he is dancing.

The backgrounds were done by one of the singers using Unreal engine. and, in and interview with "The Charismatic Voice", Geoff Castellucci admitted that he did many more takes of that low note than were used. I'm guessing that would mean a live performance could have noticeable variation. Not that I'd know the difference between an e1 or a0 by ear in the moment.

Come to think of it, the only live performances I've seen of them are from when they were on the show The Sing Off and from videos like The Chicken Song. I don't recall any time when Geoff rattled speakers. Still solid performances. Tim Foust from Home Free has a few live performance videos of him blowing out speakers from going low. And blew minds on The Sing Off. Both groups competed in season 4.

This kinda singing from Geoff is kinda like how the Mongolians do it. By shaping your mouth in different ways you get overtones on top of the original notes you were singing.. The Mongolian folk-metal band The Hú sometimes does this in their songs - obviously not as low and clear as Geoff :)
@CynicalTesuji
@CynicalTesuji 3 жыл бұрын
Geoff actually has a couple tutorial videos on his channel where he demonstrates his subharmonic technique. He isn't changing his mouth shape, so much as utilizing vocal fry which creates a resonance in his false folds that is an octave lower than the note he's actually singing. Crazy technique, and the way he can slip into and out of it so easily is so impressive (of course, he admits it tooks loads and loads of practice to be able to accomplish that).
@therealsourc3
@therealsourc3 3 жыл бұрын
@@CynicalTesuji overtone singing is basically exploiting the shape of the mouth to create resonating tones so idk how u can do it without.. you can actually hear the shape of the mouth in the sound.. 🤔
@CynicalTesuji
@CynicalTesuji 3 жыл бұрын
@@therealsourc3 I believe you. I'm just restating what the man himself said in his videos about how he performs the technique, which he refers to as subharmonics. From what I've read about throat singing, there are multiple ways of producing similar sounds, so perhaps it's just that his method making those sounds is different.
@therealsourc3
@therealsourc3 3 жыл бұрын
@@CynicalTesuji yeah, subharmonics is something else, but the overtone you hear you can do your self - if u make a wee ooo shape and hold a note and pull it through your nose, you can hear how the resonating frequency changes throughout it... subharmonics is hard to master and Geoff is definately really adept at it :)
