You bring up a good point, and I am aware that a quote like this may sometimes be unfair. The point I want to make is that many people believe that the Civil War was fought to free the slaves, and that is simply not the truth. The so-called "freedom" that African-Americans experienced at that time was a by-product of a scheme to weaken and intimidate the south, and I'm just using his words to clear away this historical distortion. I'm glad you posted an comment though.

Afraid of change? Absolutely not, and I do want to learn. That's how I accepted that the Civil War wasn't fought over the differing viewpoints on slavery in the first place. Lincoln was an extremely moral man for his time, and people feel that he represents everything good that can exist in our government. Don't think that I don't feel sadness when I read what Lincoln said about blacks. People need to know that he said this, because much of our history is given to us in a skewed form.

No surprise there Lincoln never took sides unless it was necessary because he knew there was more than one way to 'skin a cat' and he wanted to be sure the decision he made was the right one. Got to admire a man like that.

towards the middle of the war the south agreed to give up slavery if they could compromise but it wasnt slaves that the north cared about it was the union.

Students of economics wouldn't find it hard to see and realise that the abolition of slavery was an economic inevitability. Look at Europe and tell me if you can name all the monarchs that took the first steps in abolishing serfdom? I can only name 2. That's because slavery's demise had more to do with economic conditions than with noble idealism.

I think considering all the things Lincoln said and did over the course of his lifetime, this is almost like taking what he said at a particular point in time out of context, since when he said it, thats what the majority of the people needed to hear at that moment ...that it wasn't just a fight for or against slavery . he couldnt sound like an extremist if he wanted to save the union, even though I believe that he personally wanted an end to slavery. avery extremist view at the time.

its fine to believe something that he didnt say but then thats just opinion with no backing. just letting you know.

This seems like surrealism reading these comments on Lincoln, judging this man, who has been the most written about and studied, not only in America, but, the world over. The most that present day Americans know about him is probably from the book and movie, Lincoln, the Vampire Killer! I don't know if people here are judging Lincoln, the man or judging his contemporaries. Yet, whatever his contemporaries were thinking, or doing, or should have been doing or should have said ,or said differently, or how they should have handled the situation is certainly loaded on his back here. I see here a complete loss of perspective. In the context of that time and in a time when the world, friend or foe, was watching to see if the USA would be no more. Lincoln's mission was clear, Preserve the Union. On the other hand, in our times, we have a country that is challenging every precious value we have had for two centuries. Everything we were taught as children is presented as FALSE. Our very birthrights are at stake. In a country that has become divisive, we have a contrasting President who encourages that divisiveness and even by-passes the very Constitution Lincoln agonized to PRESERVE. This is the surrealism. In our contemporary times, does anyone know the correct things to say, or do. In a time, when people are self-centered, if you say something wrong, you will not know what you said wrong, but, wish you did not say it...on and on...We should treasure those things of value. If we don't, we will loose it FOREVER.

historians agree that Lincoln has said racist remarks. there was a special about it on history channel. that doesn't mean that he didn't say plenty of good things about blacks too, it just means that he was a politician and politicians will say anything they have to at any given time. you can be selective in what facts you want to believe if you want but the truth is that he has said both racist remarks and pro black remarks. he would have had to because most people back then were racist : (
