I was born in 65 , at a very young age I was often working with a lot of Vietnam Veterans and a few WW2 veterans. At the time I probably didn't appreciate enough how significant their stories were but I did pay attention to them and still remember a lot of their stories. Thank to all of you veterans.

Another excellent interview; thank you Larry & thank you James. I just finished watching this one for the second time; what a remarkable man. As an Australian from the same era but who did not serve, I find these interviews very moving . One thing, of the many that all these men share ,is the expression of pride when they actually do the salute at the finish; this level of national pride is to be envied.

Looking back 50 plus years, I was 16 or 17. I was an anti-communist and supported the war, but I was shooting service (high-power) matches with an M1 Garand and I had no delusions as to what war was about. I knew the bullets hitting the backstop would be coming from the opposite direction. I salute the Vietnam Vets. I buried my close friend about a year ago. He was a Force Recon Marine and he told me, "you didn't miss anything." I'm embarrassed as to how you guys were treated.

Thank you for your service and Welcome Home, and thanks for sharing your story. When I was returning from Desert Storm I was approached by a Vietnam Veteran in Philadelphia airport. He shook my hand, welcomed me home and made this statement, “thank you all for vindicating us Brother”. I wish I could have spoken to him longer to fully understand what he meant. Helicopter pilot, Vietnam Veteran, Norman Partridge from Towanda Kansas would have been my brother in law later in life but was killed just a few weeks in country in a crash after being shot down.

As I’ve told you many times, I missed Vietnam by six months, but after listening to this helicopter pilot, I’d like to thank him for his service and his part in doing his job and coming to get the ones that needed to be saved and be flown out of harm’s way. I know you’d or one of your pilot friends would have come for me if I needed help if I was there. Larry, another great and stirring story. Thank you for bringing vets stories from all wars especially Vietnam (my age group. You do a great service. There is a great price for our freedom.

Jim, thank you for your service. I am a ten years younger than you. I never got to serve my country in Vietnam, however I did get to spend two years as a volunteer accountant in refugee resettlement of the indigenous peoples that fought with you along the Cambodian border, Some Lao and many and Arvn soldier. But one man in particular I met when I went to Vietnam in 2004, Bien the wasn't Arvin chopper trained by your men. He survived the"re-education camps". He said what he learned from you kept him alive. "If it doesn't kill you, you will make you strong". He lives in Dalat today. Like all chopper pilots of those days, you were soldiers then and soldiers now. Horse riders in the sky forever! Thank you again, thousands of times over.

9 year airborne infantry vet here and 1st off welcome home Jim and you and ypur generation are my heros, vietnam vets is why I joined, it's eerie how similar our generations wars are, but we had the whole country go out of their way to welcome us home. I know that my generation would rather go without that attention as we feel that the vietnam guys deserve it more, I don't like it when people thank me for my service I always make it a point to let them know the ones to thank are the ones who gave their lives for them and to this country. I was 17 years old when I got to Vietnam-1966 through 1969 (My mom had to sign a waiver for me), You could not be drafted under the age of 18 but you could enlist with parents’ signature. I grew up fast and learned a lot, good and bad. (I am now 73 and still learning). I was stationed on the USS Providence and also stationed in Country at a place called "Monkey Mountain" close to DaNang,. I spent 3 tours of duty in and around Vietnam. 3 of my high school friends were killed in Vietnam, I was spared. I participated in the TET Offensive in Feb 1968, that was bad. Somewhere along the way I was exposed to Agent Orange (Nasty Stuff) I am now on disability for the effects of agent orange. When I was discharged and came home to the States we arrived in San Francisco, and there were a lot of protesters spitting on us and throwing rocks and eggs and called us baby killers. That was our welcome home. I tell you this to say to you, that whatever your position is or was on the Vietnam war, it was not the veteran who got us into the war, most of us went because we were patriots and loved our country. Blame the politicians, yes, but not the veteran. To all Vietnam Vets out there, you are not forgotten. As a previous combat Vet myself, I salute you my friend.*****

My best buddy, Cpl. Rodney Rubisoff (Rube) was a crew chief on a Huey and shot down at Hamburger Hill. The chopper wasn’t but about 10 ft off the ground, but it crashed hard enough for him to get a Purple Heart. Rodney was a guy easy to remember. He was the comedian of the company. He was always joking around. And a little humor at times like that goes a long way. Did anybody know him? RIP Rube. 💜

I flew Hueys in IIICTZ, Bien Hoa.. I learned about burns and skin hanging in sheets, the stench of burned flesh and hair up at Song Be.. A CH47 lost power on take off and caught fire.. It was hauling ARVNs and US advisors.. Some of our guys hovered down to the wreck and the wounded were loaded and taken to the City strip.. I and others off loaded them and carried them into the aid station.. Later I flew some to Quan Loi for better treatment.. Fast forward 15 years and I was flying air ambulance for a university hospital.. We would sometimes fly in burns.. The smell was the same.. I had instant memories from RVN. You never forget that smell.

@@VoicesofHistory Thanks Larry for the invitation and the welcome home.. My experiences are pretty much the same as those of others who have been interviewed. Of course, I do have some that are particularly my own like the one I described above.. My assessment of war is this: Everyone who goes to war returns home wounded; no one escapes.. Some are killed, some are dismembered, a few lose their minds or drown in alcohol, but no one is ever the same. I grew up next door to a WWII infantryman.. He was in the 4th wave to assault Utah beach and was shot thru the upper left chest.. Every year my dad would put on a big barbecue at end of the produce season (both of them were produce farmers) for all the families and hired help.. He would never eat chicken.. Being a teenager, I could ask stupid questions so I did, why don''t you ever eat the chicken? He answered me in a straight forward manner: "When I was in Europe, I saw chickens peck the eyes out of dead men and I swore I would never eat chicken again.." He wasn't upset or anything.. It was an eye opener, a history lesson.. A couple years later he put a shotgun under his chin and killed himself..

I had an uncle who was with the Triple Deuce 67'-68'. I was born in 1971 and have always had an odd obsession with this war and the UH-1. I have a full VR simulator with hydraulic feedback for cyclic, collective and pedals. I'd love for a real Huey pilot to try it out someday.

Another great video Larry. James must have been in flight school about the same time as me. I was in Class 69 27. Unlike James when I arrived in country I had about 250 hours after flight school as I had been stationed at Ft. Benning flying support for the jump school. From Benning I went to IP School then V.N. I arrived in V.N. in July and was made an AC about the middle of Aug as we were low on pilots. I was also named unit IP which was crazy - giving check rides to guys with hundreds and hundreds of combat flying.

After the VC beat the French, Presidenr Eisenhower said : "I have never talked or corresponded with a person knowledgeable in Indochinese affairs who did not agree that had elections been held at the time of the fighting, possibly 80 per cent of the population would have voted for the communist Ho Chi Minh". Ike created the US military theme park called "South Vietnam", in order to wreck that election. Magine that. Just ten years prior, Ike had just finished leading the 'Arsenal of Democracy" that freed Europe, but by 1954 he's found an election he couldn't tolerate, and wants to settle his political grievance with bullets. Fighting for democracy is a much better role.
