Working for S.E.T.I. was always a dream job for me. I remember having a job fair in 6th grade and you had to explain what your chosen profession was and people looked at me like I was insane for saying, "S.E.T.I.". This game perfectly captures what working for S.E.T.I. is...night after night staring at a computer, listening to static and nothingness...desperately hoping that tiny increase in the beeps and boops are a new signal and not just a dead star's remnants. I still run Berkely's S.E.T.I. program on my PC and have been since the mid-2000's and it uses your computers downtime to help go through all of the thousands of terrabytes of data that they have stored and are currently receiving from all the different signals they find. It helps them out tremendously by helping to compile and you get credit if anything is found.
@arcturus4317 Жыл бұрын
Dude you described one of my dream jobs, I have always wanted to have a job like that. Definitely looking into S.E.T.I more
@exaVolt13 Жыл бұрын
@Arcturus The movie CONTACT is based off of the Carl Sagan novel by the same name. Jodie Foster's character in the movie, she essentially works for S.E.T.I. (or a program that's similar). People were very divided over whether the movie was a good representation of the novel, but I still thoroughly enjoy the movie and watch it all the time despite it being about 30 years old now. Also, the PC program, it's still available. Search for Berkeley's (the university) S.E.T.I. program and it should take you to a download. You'll see the data being complied in a screensaver it has in the download. It's pretty amazing.

For any future gameplay, be aware that there is a pause menu option to turn daily credit penalties off. It may help you ease into the game, especially because it starts expecting you to file away your signals as you become able to process them into different levels. Don't be ashamed, the most popular playthrough of this game does it to avoid severely limiting options and slowing the pace even further.

There are rocks in one of the lockers in the garage, you can use them to smash open crates. Not only is this useful for removing crates from the drone landing pad, but you can also open the much larger crates scattered around (like the ones in the bedroom) to receive the random selection of items inside (which includes food). It takes a while though, you have to physically smash them against the crates repeatedly. There's a crowbar you can buy to break them open Half-Life style, it's a bit quicker. You'll also hallucinate if you don't eat food/don't sleep with either value at zero. Nightmares also sometimes happen, especially if you go to bed hungry. There's also a camera mounted to the wall outside the base's front door. You can activate it by interacting with it and view it's image from the laptop inside the base. You can also dismount it and move it around to a location of choice. Useful for... keeping an eye on things... Finally there's a ton of hidden things scattered around the place to find. That note you found in that strange clearing is a part of a subplot connected to some of these secrets. Poke around a bit if you can, who knows what you'll find?

The void and space has always comforted me. Looking up into the sky and realizing just how insignificant I truly am and by extension my problems gives me reassurance. I know it sounds weird finding peace in insignicance but it comes with this profound sense of freedom, wonder and luck that I get to be here at this very moment and see all of the incredible things this universe has to offer.
@evergreenartifact515 Жыл бұрын
I think that feeling of incomprehensible vastness being comforting is common for many. Humans have stared into the sky since the beginning, and I would never describe the feeling while doing so being uncomfortable. It’s commonly stated that the vastness of the universe confirms our insignificance. But this is an assumption. Because if all the universe is barren in any meaningful way as far as we have seen, it is equally valid to say that our existence is the most significant thing in the entire universe.
@josephmatthews7698 Жыл бұрын
@@evergreenartifact515 I usually hear people fear space or it gives them uneasiness. I've always found the idea we're alone not only statistically improbable but a bit egocentric. Far more likely to me space is either far too vast or intelligence is an evolutionary dead end. Even if it is somehow true that life has never formed elsewhere I gotta ask, why is that significant? And significant to whom or what? If we are alone that only makes our insignificance even greater.. Every emperor, king, CEO, president and person who ever lived has done so on a tiny fraction of a tiny fraction of a blue speck in a pretty average solar system in a pretty average galaxy. It's the equivalent of a single bacteria forming somewhere no one has ever seen before or thought possible but dying before it could reproduce. Just a single drop in a massive ocean, sure it's neat if it's discovered - but comparatively does it even matter? The flipside being how just to exist in this moment where I am given the opportunity to observe anything luck and improbable beyond all measure regardless of life elsewhere. For earth to form the way it did, for life to sprout, for beings to evolve, for my ancestors to have mated and died in the exact time and way I needed them to for me to exist right now. All so improbable and unlikely we each might as well have won the lottery ten times over in a row before we were even born. Truly amazing.

Perfect game for the channel! While you might feel inclined to focus purely on the job, the game very much rewards exploration and curiosity, so you shouldn't be afraid to wander around more in between signals once you get the hang of doing the daily tasks. Even the base itself has some things you seem to not have spotted. Despite being a very early demo, as is obvious from the jankiness, the game is already filled with an unbelievable amount of stuff going on under the surface, and it's constantly being updated. The dev also loves being funni and messing with people, try typing "alien" in the console Also, the game pretty clearly takes inspiration from Source games, so the same logic you might think would work in GMod will also work in this game.
