Did any of you vets know my husband James Robert Artis, a Vietnam vet from Philadelphia, Pa. He passed from Covid in January 2021. He came back so emotionally scared from the trauma. Never walked beside, always in front. I can’t count the times he told me to be quiet walking through woods. Someone recently scoffed at me saying “nobody did 5 tours”. He had no family he knew of and told me he was viewed as “expendable”, along with many others like him who had similar backgrounds. Jim’s last battle was 30 days with Covid. He fought like the warrior he was, and only died because our health care system in the end still failed him. Broken-hearted 💔

I was 17 years old when I got to Vietnam-1966 through 1969 (My mom had to sign a waiver for me), I grew up fast and learned a lot, good and bad. (I am now 73 and still learning). I was stationed on the USS Providence and also stationed in Country at a place called "Monkey Mountain" close to DaNang,. I spent 3 tours of duty in and around Vietnam. 3 of my high school friends were killed in Vietnam, I was spared. I participated in the TET Offensive in Feb 1968, that was bad. Somewhere along the way I was exposed to Agent Orange (Nasty Stuff) I am now on disability for the effects of agent orange. When I was discharged and came home to the States we arrived in San Francisco, and there were a lot of protesters spitting on us and throwing rocks and eggs and called us baby killers. That was our welcome home. I tell you this to say to you, that whatever your position is or was on the Vietnam war, it was not the veteran who got us into the war, most of us went because we were patriots and loved our country. Blame the politicians, yes, but not the veteran. To all Vietnam Vets out there, you are not forgotten. As a previous combat Vet myself, I salute you my friend.

I don’t mean to sound rude either, but you do sound rude…Seemed like he luckily just caught Carl unexpectedly n was able to get what he could from him wherever it was they were. Some kind of convention about ww2 of sorts from what I heard. There’s only so much time in a day n he had another guy to interview as well. Larry does a lot of good work n has a lot of love for veterans, going above n beyond to get these stories recorded. I’d bet he probably absolutely hated having to say that n stop the interview like that way more than y’all criticizing him for it. You weren’t even there, if you were, you could have recorded the rest of his story yourself n uploaded it on KZbin… But you weren’t…

On March 2018 my father went to be with his fallen brothers an family..He was buried with full honors..I was rummaging threw some of his old pics an stuff an came across A Silver Star an Then a Bronze Star an 2 Purple Hearts...I came across a letter from The Commander an Chief about what the Silver Star was for an The Purple Heart it was addressed to my Grandparents..My father was in the 9th Division from 66-69..He never spoke of what he had done there or what had happened..He was tough old school type that never showed emotions..As I finished going threw the stuff, there was another letter from The Commander An Chief bout the Bronze Star an Purple heart The actions that took placed was a eye opener why my father was the way he was..They were under attack by A Sapper Unit an he was shot while aiding to his fallen brothers while mortar round were popping off..what ever my did for his Country had people from Vietnam show up to say GoodBye...They were Kit Carson or something like that..

I flew Hueys in III CTZ 68-69 with an assault helicopter company out of Bien Hoa.. I knew that AO very well- Parrot's Beak, An Loc, Tay Ninh (Nui Ba Den), Song Be.. .. I always volunteered to fly for 5th SF on my DCS mission days.. I felt like they were getting things done over there.. What he said is true.. Everyone who goes to war returns home wounded, one way or another.. I was 19 when I arrived in country and when I got home, I felt very old.. I couldn't relate to my old high school friends- they seemed like children..

I did a combat tour Desert shield/storm.. we flew home in a commercial airplane too, I didn't let anyone stateside know I was on the freedom bird.. flew into Milwaukee in my DCU's, a Vietnam veteran cab driver drove me all the way home.. free fare.. he didn't want me to feel like he did when he came back home.. I understand all too well the love and passion people have when our brothers and sisters come back from a combat theater..

He doesn't talk about his experience but hes blind in his left eye and has a metal plate in his head. I myself Years later would join amd end up serving with all 3 divisions along the way during my 9 year stint in the army,,,, I was with the 173rd 2/503 in Afghanistan 07-09. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart Mr. Griggs, for your service. The Vietnam war was a political war. It was about politicians and corporate greed. The politicians and corporations who would benefit from this war didn’t give a damn about how many young lives were taken from us or how many families were destroyed because they sent young men and women into the conflict. Was the goal worth it? Stopping communism from overtaking a country that had zero effect on us? Was the 58,000+ US casualties worth it? Was the millions of Vietnamese who lost their lives worth it? Not to mention all the wounded and veterans whose lives were taken away struggling with addiction, suicide and PTSD? It appears that Vietnam isn’t doing too bad today considering they were fighting in war for over 20 years. God Bless men like Duane Griggs that answered the call even if the motives of the war were questionable at best.

My dad would never talk about Vietnam but he served in the Navy on three carriers two tours and got out in 1969 but he did served in National Guard. Decided to reenlist in the Navy. He retired from the Navy. My grandpa served in US Air Corps from 1940 through 1945 then transferred to National Guard which was activated during Korea War. Both of them has never talked to anyone about their service. Both of them are a hero to me because they’re what being an American is all about. They put on their uniforms and do what they have to do, with honors. I respect each and everyone of the veterans who served. Thank you all.
