I'm an architect, and I feel Virgil designed and looked at things like an architect, the lettering the quotations, showing how the objects or shoes where made. It all looks like architectural technical drawings or detail drawings.

The early life portion missed an opportunity to tie in the connection to HipHop music. As well as two other legends. Pharrell and Pusha T. His vision was birthed after High School from their influence. Specifically, Pusha. Along with Michael Jordan and Caravaggio. Pharrell also had the first Louis Vuitton collection, before KanYe or Virgil along with his impact on BAPE. Virgil said that BAPE is his generation's "Chanel." Pyrex Vision was named from the song and Lil Wayne diss, "Mr. Me Too." Pusha's line, "Pyrex stirs turned to Cavalli furs." Even 'off-white' is a reference to the color of powder. In short, above all else, Virgil was HIPHOP. And that is why he was so embraced BY the culture. He wasn't just a designer, he was one of Ours sitting in those rooms and making those decisions. A true legend.

As a working artist, I learned that you really learn the most when troubleshooting mistakes. If you work in a medium like computer animation or drawing, if something doesn't look right you can change it, over and over and end up over working it. But if you work in something like ceramics, much of the time it could look perfect and when it comes out of the kiln it looks totally different. It taught me to work mistakes into a piece. I think Kanye working with a creative like Virgil was probably helpful for him. He seems so confused now that he is no longer connected to working in mistakes or learning from mistakes. He is so driven to translate his vision without working in the happy accidents or another person's input that he can't finish anything.

its funny to think that kanye and virgil share the same principal for art, you dont need to discover or create something totally new, you can take inspiration (like kanye's samples and use of pop sounds in his early age and virgil's 3% style) and readapt it to be refreshing

A reminder of how priveleged works. Streetware has been designed in urban centers across the country since the 80's to compliment hip hop and none of the young men and women ever got the opportunity that Abloh did. He wasn't a great designer. He used pop culture to push simple design for excessive prices. His styles were desirable based on who wore them and had access to them, not how innovative or stylish they were. Timing, social media and his relationship with Kanye worked in his favor. The intern move that Kanye got him access to was a blessing. He was an anomaly that will not be duplicated. Let's see how long it takes for a luxury brands to open their doors to a talented non famous man of African descent that is not already attached to celebrities. I'll be shocked when it happens.
