The Volkswagen Amarok brings the firm's unbeatable image and peerless quality to the double-cab pick-up market. It benefits from the same company car tax breaks as any other contender in this class, but has just as much appeal as a family car as it does as a commercial vehicle. This is mainly down to the space and quality on offer inside. The Amarok is sold only as a double-cab five-seater for now -- a single-cab model will follow later -- and it stands out with its high-grade materials and solid build quality. As the styling suggests, this car is virtually unstoppable away from the beaten track. The 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engine comes with a choice of 120bhp or 161bhp outputs, while there are Startline, Trendline and Highline specs. All feature four-wheel drive, to ensure the car can take the roughest terrain in its stride. Massive dimensions make parking a challenge, but once you've got used to how big it feels from behind the wheel, the Amarok is a great deal of fun.

Dan McCarthy Yes but only because the U.S. Government set vehicle standards so high it really killed most the options from other country's. Epa and Safety restrictions while they make sense take away so many fun vehicles. An whats even worse alot of the cars i want that we don't get i have to wait 25 years before i can even import one.

Knallkoper Morder The Euro standards do just as or better job than the U.S Emissions / Safety standards. It is very obvious that our Free Enterprise system is abused by the Detroit 3 Auto Manufacturers and the major U.S Oil companies. To top it off, the U.S government doesn't do anything about it. It is both a matter of abuse and political debate the way we have our car and truck choices setup in Canada and the U.S. To make matters worse, these light-duty trucks in particular (Volkswagen Amarok, Latin American Ford Ranger) are subject to the 25% Percent Chicken Tax when they are imported. Futhermore, it costs about $15,000 U.S Dollars to "Federalize" a single vehicle (Federalizing meaning that the car / truck will pass and be fitted with U.S Emissions and Safety standards). All this adds up to is less to no profit for Volkswagen, and an insanely high MSRP at the dealership that may exceed $100,000 U.S Dollars. It simply isn't worth it to have it sold here. Since Canada has very similar Emissions, Import and Safety Regulations, I imagine it is no better to bring the vehicle over there either. North America is violating their own Competition and Anti-Trust laws. Mexico and South America has way more car and truck choices than North America as a whole, but you cannot just go down there and buy a Volkswagen Amarok or a non-U.S model vehicle and drive it here. U.S Border Patrol and Customs will confiscate the vehicle. I found out on a couple forums that it is illegal for a United States Citizen to drive a Mexican or South American Plated and registered vehicle across the United States Border. This law also happens to be against the 4th Amendment of the United States Constitution for unreasonable search and seizure. America is supposed to be the land of the free, but that is starting to be questionable if you ask me. It is simply unbelievable how limited we are. Words cannot describe how I feel about this situation. Anyways, time to wrap up this comment.

***** It may be up to the Manufacturer to sell such vehicles, but I know for a fact that Volkswagen is seriously considering selling the Amarok in the United States. Just search for "Volkswagen Amarok USA" on Google or your preferred search engine. Any manufacturer would make more profit if they sold more models than what is currently available in the United States. I don't know why Volkswagen can't use their United States located factories to build the Amarok. Maybe those are specifically reserved for passenger cars and non-commercial vehicles. The Amarok currently is built in Argentina and Germany. If they built it in Mexico, I imagine it would be exempt from the 25% Chicken Tax because of NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) between Canada, United States and Mexico. In fact, they have a plant in Puebla, Mexico, but again, Volkswagen for some reason only builds passenger cars there. Toyota and Nissan currently build their Tacoma and Frontier (Navarra in Europe) in the United States, and therefore are not considered imports and not subject to the 25% Chicken Tax. It boggles my mind why Volkswagen can't do the same, especially since Volkswagen said they were considering it. According to a few articles I read, Volkswagen is watching very closely to a competitor Mid-size truck from General Motors, the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. If those sell well, then Volkswagen might do something about that in the United States. Only time will tell.

+donville1985 +donville1985 It would hardly work. My brother says it's a great idea but too many Americans are close-minded and wouldn't dare touch anything that doesn't say Ford, Chevrolet or Toyota on the grille. There's a LOT of truth to that. Some have driven only one brand their entire lives and will scream bloody murder if asked to try something different. It does NOT matter if the new brand is better. They won't hear it and see brand loyalty as a religious belief. Trust me, this will sell in small numbers but VW would have to yank a V6 from the Passat to get it to sell enough to turn a profit. I however have NO brand loyalty. Have owned Chrysler, GM, MINI and now VW over the last 14 years. Even if they offered it with a small turbo 4-cylinder, I'd drive it. I'm always looking to drive something new or different. I also like that VW offers so many models with a stick shift. My current GTI has one.

How much ikea furniture can it fit in the back if the bed? Anyone who's owned a pickup knows when the bed out the back is empty the rear end will bounce around or even slide out in the wet (especially it has no stability control) i had the 2010 Isuzu Dmax before & went sideways in the rain, luckily no traffic coming the other way..

@07SuperchargedSS there may be one ranger for every 8 f series trucks i see. and theres 1 cany/colorado per 15 sierras/silverados. i see quite a few tacomas but theyre a bit bigger than other mid size small trucks. i also barely see any frontier or ridgelines here. Most people here own rams or f150s or Sierras/silverados.

I would say the ranger but I have some serious problems about how this truck looks and it's off road capabilities compared to the hilux and the Mitsubishi. but if you want one go for it.

Being American I don't find that truck huge at all. The only truck I had access to that bounced was my Grandfathers 1972 C20 Camper Special. All the others may have hopped a bit depending on the coarseness of the road. Additionally, the offroading she does is nothing a normal 2 wheel drive couldn't handle with ease. She is more than attractive and intelligent young woman. As we sometimes say, "she's easy on the eyes".

In a country where a 3 lanes highway is about as wide as the narrowest mountain roads in the US,a Ford F-250 is like a bull in the china store. The dealers only sell "small" pick-ups around here, and they don't sell a lot.If you want one of those american mammoths, you have to import it for yourself, but you have to be crazy if you want one in a country where the roads are so small and the gas is so frickin' expensive.

Yeah countries outside the US have trucks that can tow massive loads as well. They are makes like Scania, Kenworth, Isuzu, Mack. How many people need to tow 14,000kgs in their family car? Most pickup trucks here in Australia can tow 3,500kgs. More than enough for most peoples personal life. If you want to tow more than 3500, you buy a real truck.

I would love to drive this truck. Unfortunately, if VW tries to sell this in the US, it will flop. They might want to yank a V-6 from the Passat series and turbocharge it so it'll appeal to us gas guzzling Americans :). The only truck I've ever seen on the roads here with a small engine is the Ford Ranger but even those are rare. 1:33 - Dammit, why doesn't VW have this on the Golf? I frequently write notes and print out stuff on paper so I could use something like that to clip to the dashboard.
