The Amarok is amazing to drive compared to the others. That engine. ! Pulls and Pulls. It even sounds grunty. Horses for courses though, Amarok by far the best drive, Hilux the best off road, Ranger the most bells and whistles. The Triton is the cheapest. The Colorado fits somewhere in between. The Amarok has full time 4WD, Ranger does not nor do the others and this is an advantage as they are 2WD, with 4WD only useable off road. So like always pick the car that suits your needs, your budget and what matters to you.

Agree, I have driven pretty much every recent ute... nothing comes close to the Amarok 580... it’s a gun... drives like a dream, for a ute it feels like it’s on rails! Expensive, but test drive one and if you don’t think it’s worth it, don’t buy it.

I could live without the safety gizmos, never had them for the 40yrs. I'll take the engine & drive train combo in VW, not to mention the ride. Small motor, twin turbos, 10 speed untested gearbox, all spells trouble to me.

A lot of people in Australia especially shouldn’t be driving, no doubt, but well implemented, these systems can save you (and other road users) in a moment of inattentiveness or where a critical situation unfolds, both of which happen to even the most competent drivers. Once you’ve had them, few people would be without them again.

It's not about not being able to drive without them. You only need it once ! My Audi A7 had it, without it once happened to drop something on the foot well. One moment looking down, the car in front did an emergency stop as it missed the exit. Without car's auto braking I would have hit it. Also sometimes after driving 800 km, such a system can make the difference when your reflexes are not there. Adaptive cruise control and lane assist also remove some of the stress when driving long distance on the motorway. As I said, you only need them once :)

Amarok is a fantastic ride overall as an ute. If one likes it, won't regret it. The Ranger is focused in providing the user with SUV experience in an ute... I see a lot of people that have two cars simply because one is strictly for hard stuff and the other for cruising. Well with my Wildtrak I feel no need to have two cars, because I've (sort of) got both in one... I just give it a good wash after the hard work. It all comes down to your pocket and personal taste... But choose without degrading either and making up bad experiences because we all had it... Whether with Mercedes BMW jeep, there will always be that "one in a million"! If you're a grown man you'll understand this. Regarding the "annoying" tech... I see guys saying they don't need smartphones... All they need in a phone it to be able to send a text message, make a call, set the alarm and a lantern. And we are in the 21st century.

Fair decision based on price. I have an Amarok and love it thus far and paid much less than the figures mentioned. Very comfortable. Yes - we’re spoilt for choice, a Ranger would be awesome also. But! Have you seen the Cybertruck, Rivian and Bollinger? Now we’re getting serious.

Hi, as I am into buying a truck I would like to mention one rather important difference for me. As I have a 6 year old son. He will need to travel in his isofix seat in the 2nd row. The Ranger bench can fold up as a whole. But not with the child seat in place. And I rather not place stuff on the seats when I can place them on the floor. The Amarok seats fold up 1/3 and 2/3. So I can leave the child seat. And still fold up the 2/3 part to place a suitcase or fridge on the floor. Mind that I still favour the Ranger. And will find a decent protection for the seats. But for some people this might be helpful in their choice making.

R D it will do. Most twin turbos have one size for low and one size for high. The single turbo option will normally have more lag. At least that has been my experience. Twin turbo q7 and x5 suffered no lag at all. A6, v70 with single turbos struggled a little.

not sure about the ranger, but i have both versions of the amarok and yes the v6 feels laggier. also the turbo is pretty loud, you can hear clearly with the windows open while in the biturbo version you can't.

The Amarok is probably the best handling pick up in the market, and the only one with permanent AWD , and until recently the only pick up with disc brakes at the rear... Would rather avoid getting in a accident in the first place, but hopefully the next gen Amarok will have rear airbags as well.

I bought a highline and put a few extras on it and came out the same as a wild track drive away. What is funny is that the Ranger doesn't let you extend the steering wheel, I'm 6'2 and this is a must. I don't get why people need all these safety features? Did people forget how to drive all of a sudden? My partner has a Subaru Lib and all this tech shit drives me crazy, and the cost of repairing it all when the warranty runs out is going to hurt. I prefer a car/ute that I'm in control of thanks, since if you need any of these "safety features" i don't think said person should be driving. One thing VW should do is put air bags in for the back seats, i think this is a must for all cars as it can save lives from a T bone accident.

Today's card are designed to crumple with airbag and other safety support. The rear of that Amarok would be deadly in ALOT of crashes. Too bad ancap doesn't test rear occupant safety otherwise they'd have no choice to be cheap.

I have Ranger XLT 2,2 l, now I order Amarok. Talk to you dealer and you will get very good price. In video they are speaking about expensive price but you will (I did) get alwais cca 21 % less. That means for comparing: Wildtrak cost the same money like Amarok Highline. I know it. And by the way do you knou why VW stoped putting 2,0 L Biturbo in old version Amarok? IT was power! Not good desision of Ford company...

I don't see carsguide disclaimer in video about receiving money or not from either manufacturer. In other KZbin review channels this is a must. Clearly Amorak is a better ute, just need to find a good deal then done with it. 55k drive away V6 was on for a long time, maybe 50k to find a display demo? Much harder to find a twin turbo ranger below 60k for sure. Who cares about bells and whistles in this segment.

I personally prefer having a key to push button start, what happens if your push button start craps out, it's not like you can limp home, the car won't even start, and I also prefer the manual shift lever from 2wd to 4wd, again it's more reliable, I know people that have issues with their switches and they end up stuck in 4and wd drive low or they're stuck in 2wd when they want 4wd, I know it's about modern like lane sensors and blind spot indicators but I find those aren't actually needed if people weren't such lazy drivers and looked around their vehicle but I'd rather an older car, with less to go wrong and less stuff to beep at you

What happens if your fob gets water damaged and doesnt work, alot of cars don't have an emergency key built into the fob, if your actual key ges water damaged you can still on look and start the car, may be an extreme example but its just my preference

I am sorry, but if you only say the Ranger wins because of price, then I do not call that a win at all. The Amarok wins on every other level. I have a 4 cylinder Amarok and my daughter owns a Wildtrak, she got hers first 2 or so years ago and I hated it from the moment I got in it. It is the worst. I got my Amarok a year ago and it is the best vehicle I have ever owned! We have had many different vehicles and 4WDs over the last 30+ years, and the Amarok is streets ahead on every single level. I hope one day to have a V6, but my 4 banger is more than capable and does everything I have asked of it with ease! I am sorry, but the Amarok, without any doubt is the best. The price, you are paying for quality. Fords are nothing but trouble.

No mentioning the build quality? The Ford (build in thailand I believe) is gonna be in the shop for repairs at least three months a year, while the amarok is a well made car in Germany. I went to Ford and there was a ranger there waiting for his new owner. There was a piece of tape hanging out of the wheelarch, and when I asked the seller about it and pulled on it, a whole cabletree fell out. The seller was so embarrased about it... I had a laugh and went back to VW and ordered the Amarok...

What a nonsensical rant The Ford, Toyota, Mazda, Mitsu are all made in Thailand under strict quality control and the build quality is generally excellent. Sticky tape holding them together you say? Three months a year in the workshop.? Whats the point in making up idiotic stories? Clearly you have not had much to do with, or been around the kind of vehicles you are commenting on. Only a dimwit is going to listen, or agree with you when you make statements like this. By the way, most of the Amaroks out there have been made in Argentina and VW says they WILL be moving the rest of production there too. Corporations like to find cheap labor, this is called Globalization, Get used to it and get over it. So you enjoy your VW and your own subjective view of reality, meanwhile the real battle between the Trucks/Utes, at this stage at least, and in this country, whether you like it or not, is still between the Ranger and Hilux. And Toyota will lose their king status if they dont stop relying on that Unbreakable tag to sell vehicles, a tag which they spent a lot of time, effort and money creating for themselves, but which is now starting to crumble due to a couple of known flaws which at this stage, they are refusing to address.

I remember going bush bashing and there being a lot of wet sand really deep and dry sand mud and also having rocky surfaces and we where in the Amarok and it went over all of it easily and never got stuck it also felt really safe to be in yet we kept getting stuck behind a ranger which constantly was getting bogged. The Amarok also felt smoother to drive in on road where as when I was in the ranger the car had a weird vibration in it which made me quite dizzy when I got out. In VW like you said you get a premium feel in the cabin where as in the ranger it has orange stitching and thats all. Not only this the VW can Tow more and also accelerates and maintains a higher top speed compared to the ford which seemed a bit sluggish and slow. This is just my personal opinion and my experiences with the 2 different vehicles.

I just purchased a ute yesterday. I always wanted to buy the Amarok, but to get what the Ford had, you had to spend $20k more. The want over the logic didn't add up. Maybe if it was 5 grand more, I'd buy the Amarok, because it's what I wanted. But once I got the pricing, I didn't want it anymore hah. I ended up buying a Ranger in the new 2.0 bi-turbo. Maybe when I've got extra coin laying around, I'll go the Amarok - Hopefully it gets an update by then haha.

Ford really need to try its 3L powerstroke from the f150 but while sales of the current ranger 3.2 are through the roof I doubt it will happen shame really as a midsized truck it’s been the main seller on the world market, come on ford some of us tow and can’t get a full sized truck here in Blighty

VW made sure to have the low buddy. theres the diff lock and the traction control together. I agree with you, key takes the cake and all the safety features are for drivers who dont seem to DRIVE. That want to be taken there by the car.

We bought a 2012 3.2 5 cylinder ranger at work it has clocked up 430 000kms towing 2.5t for approximately 400000kms .the auto wore out at approximately 350000kms the gearbox specialist said it just wore out..the engine purrs like a kitten.never a problem. I would like to here people praise the euro when it gets past 100000kms putting around to the local cafe.

i have a 2010 2.5 hilux with 480k, a 2.0 2013 amarok with 260k, a 1988 d-20 with 2.5 million kms that i pretty much have to rebuild every year at this point, and a 2020 v6 amarok with 2k none of them gave me any trouble before 500k yet. the d20 was rock solid up until like 1.5 million km. then it started to fall apart.

These cars are also used to drive throughout the work day jobsite to jobsite.....sitting through traffic. It's nice to have driver aids to take some of the work out of your drive. I have an Amarok and I would LOVE to see electric steering, keyless entry/start, adaptive cruise, lane keep assist on a Benz level, foward collision warning and 360 camera.

It's by far the best driving ute in the class bar the ranger raptor. 1. remember that you are buying a family (SUV/Ute) not a sports car, so you shouldn't really care which one has more grunt because the Ranger is proven to not only be way better combating (serious) off road conditions for those who live in Australia and love 4x4 or smashing the dunes, but being on par with towing as well both cars pulling 3.5 Tonnes 2. Safety features are a must in cars, what kind of car doesn't have rear airbags? these are the questions I would ask if I had kid's or was travelling with passengers. 3. Fuel consumption should have been a factor that wasn't mentioned, once again Ranger at 7.4L compared to the Amarok's 8.9L 4. let's look at cost to repairs Ford being Ford parts would be 1000x easier and cheaper to come buy then that of its German counterpart 5. The Amarok's drive is far more superior to the Ranger's but that's only because of the V6 and the German engineering suited for comfort. that being said if you prefer to splash out a few grand more, and most likely some extra $$$ over the years when parts begin to wear, you still cant go wrong with the Amarok. these two are still far superior in 2019 compared to majority of the SUVs. but my personal choice would be the Ranger simply because of its safety features off-road capabilities and the cost of services and repairs down the track.

Not everyone wants all that safety bullshit lane keeping assist, ect. Which in the long term fails! How can you say the Ford is better when the only thing you said that the Ford was better in was the steering? Also Amarok 1 gear is it's low range when selected off road so you don't really miss out on low range. I don't hate the Ford and think it comes down to the individual but I feel like in the end you said one thing but went the other way.

The Ford Ranger brand has been around for a while compared the the eight or so year old Amarok brand making the comparison Em unfair to say the least. The ranger should be compared to the Toyota Hilux. All in all the Ranger tops the class in my view.

udo weidmann not true. This engine is going to filter down through the range by the time the time the new model comes. It’s a marketing strategy. I’ve been told that you can expect this engine in the high line and lower models by mid 2019.

Both massively over priced with the Ford being let down by its plain Jane climate cluster and lack of ride refinement. VW still lacking on rear air bags and other safety features. Neither has a great track record with after sale customer care/warranty For the budget conscience, it might pay to wait on the "new" facelifted Triton due out in Dec 2018 before making a decision.

Tell your mechanic that this stories doesn't really fired up even with kids anymore. I drive Amarok I bought it from 2011 and day today I only do regular service, no problem in engine or anything else. Is not that powerfull is only 4 cyl 2L but for my job is perfect. Just for a information tell this to your favourite mechanic I have ( 213K ) on the clock and it's running like a bought it today .When you drive you would know is Amarok for you or not. Also i have VW Golf mk5 2L 110 kw 2004 model, yes yesterday i change 4 tyres and do my timming belt, but no problems at all. Overseas i have VW Polo i bought it in 2012 day today a light in that car I didn't change my Dad is driving it, and we are now in 2019 yeah. I'm really surprised for Australia how they can allowed European cars to come into this Country instead of keep and make Fords, Holdens, and the other SUV.To stand behind and say that we have the strong vehicles.I bet you you'll see in few years no more Holden Colorado, or Fords would be drive around Australia.
