One of the most practical and iconic cars built ever. How could anyone not like the Beetle? Used to see so many of these. And that air-cooled engine! I would still love to get one.

My second one was a 1967 off white one I bought from my Dad ( he loved them also), when I was 34. I wish now at 64 years of age I would have kept at least one of them! Thanks for showing the video!

Had a yellow 73 Super Beetle in high school and college. 1600cc dual port with about 60hp on a good day at sea level going downhill. To this day I could still probably tear down that engine and do the clearances and rebuild it from memory. So easy to work on.

Volkswagens didn't rattle because they were welded together. I had a number of them. Loved them all. No power, no heat, but they'd go anywhere on fumes. LOL
@soilmanted
@soilmanted Жыл бұрын
Mine never had a problem producing enough heat. It actually warmed the cabin faster and hotter than any other car. Too many mechanics do not attach the air hoses correctly and adjust the flaps correctly. There is nothing wrong with the design of the heating system. The same fan that cools the engine blows monsterous amounts of hot air into the cabin, after it passes over the engine, and though the heat exchangers wrapped around the exhaust pipes, where the air is heated even more before it blows almost painfully hot into the passenger cabin. If a paper hose is missing, if the flaps at the end of the heat exchangers are not adjusted properly, if the flaps are not lubricated maybe once every few year, they may get stuck in the closed position, and heat won't get into the cabin. Very easy repair. The flaps could use a drop of oil in 1 or 2 places. The heat exchangers rust through after about 150,000 miles (240.000 klilometers) and some of the hot air will not get to the cabin. They can be easily replaced, or even patched up. Even with small leaks in the heat exchangers, the cabin still gets very hot. My van did not have enough power, but the beetle had plenty. No problem getting onto limited access highways or passing slow-moving traffic. And car would go 80 mph for 10 hours without overheating. Van would only go 65. The valves needed adjustment once every 6,000 miles I think it was. Spark plugs needed replacement I think at 12,000.. Timing needed adjustment every 6000 because car had distributor points which changed the timing as they wore down. Easy jobs to do but you had to do them. Carburetor needed adjustment - air-fuel mixture and idle speed, that was it. Jets needed to be cleaned out with compressed air and every 30,000 miles or so you would need to replace the diaphragm that pumped in extra fuel when accelerating. If you adjusted the mixture correctly the engine and fuel pre-heating tube would not get carboned up, ever. However the engine would only last 100,000 miles before the number three cylinder would suck a valve. Exhaust valve would stretch, break, and get sucked into the cylinder. It would damage the piston, cylinder, and connecting rod. But you would be warned before that happened when adjusting the valves, as you would see the valve lash starting to get smaller instead of larger. If you took off the heads soon after you saw the lash shrinking, you could recondition the heads and the engine would not have any expensive broken parts that needed replacement. You could simply replace the exhaust valves, resurface the valve seats and the intake valves, adjust everything, and you would be good to go.

Loved that car and drove it until my sophomore year in college when it started to have problems and I simply couldn't afford to maintain it so I sold it to a buddy for $800. I vowed I would have another one when I had the money. Years later...and after a milestone birthday I saw him....a 1978 Convertible with a for sale sign at the side of the road. Engineering is all about the most output with the least amount of input. In that respect, VW beetles were technical and engineering masterclass vehicles. Simple design, rear air-cooled engine (no heavy and problematic radiator) and constant advancement in the car's technical progress and quality. That wonderful little automobile put a great nation back on track to prosperity. The VW beetle represented true "Vorsprung durch technik".

A few quick comments: VW was offered for free by the British to any major auto firm that wanted it; no takers. Unlike other companies, the Allies completely changed the company from its WW2 roots. My friend's 1968 Beetle was by far the best made car I've ever seen, and that includes RR and MBenz. The basic VW design was dreadful, unsafe, with an awful highway boom sound with the windows down, and no A/C to allow closing the windows. But, it was made exquisitely and was easily repaired.

I wish Volkswagen would re-make the original Beetle as a "Special Anniverary Edition" Exactly the same, no computers, no gizmo's, all chrome e bumpers & wind up windows. A sraightforward, air cooled, lovely little car with a heart. I bet they would sell like hot cakes.

I can only imagine the repetitive motion injuries these workers sustained having to lift whole car bodies into place. The spot welding alone would kill your wrists

@Milford Civic That kind of thinking is what destroyed the western work ethic. Now no one in our western countries wants to do hard work.

My first car was a 64 VW beetle. I would fill up the oil and gas every time I went to the gas station but that car was reliable.

those cars were junk....no horsepower, oil leaks, clunky suspension, noisey interior, electrical problems, water channel rust, water getting into the carberator......VW's were one notch above a Go Kart cheap garbage

I remember that my gym teacher had a 1974 burgundy one back windows behind doors were bubble outwards had chrome 5 stars and stereo system. It was so cool . Engine diesel in the back trunk n spare tire in front. And brought back into production in the late 90s Timeless classic

I wonder how many welds there were in a '49 Beetle vs. a '78 or one of the last real Beetles from '03; they changed so little. It's surprising that they didn't at least change the window fittings so they could caulk the glass in place instead of messing with rubber gaskets. That last Beetle to go down the line, before the imposters took over, at 9:41, must be worth a fortune now.

It is worth a fortune indeed. To my knowledge, it's currently owned by Volkswagen and it's kept either in Puebla Mexico or Wolfsburg Germany.

Caulk?? Tell me you don't know anything about cars without telling me you don't know anything about cars...Did you see how fast it was to use the string??? And here we are 60 years later, and while replacing old dried out and cracked window seals, the best way to do it is using a string.....
